Darth Maul to Star in a New Comic!

darth-maul

Since the Disney buyout, Palpatine’s first Sith Apprentice has already received his own canonical miniseries in the form of Dark Horse’s Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir, which showed what Maul did in the waning days of the Clone Wars. Now, Marvel is committed to giving Maul a new miniseries (written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by Luke Ross) set just before The Phantom Menace.

From USA Today:

The comic finds Maul an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious, who would later become the Galactic Emperor. Told to stand down from engaging with Jedi yet, Maul hunts down the worst of the worst in the cosmic underworld to vent his frustration.

After learning a young Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis has fallen into the hands of a crime lord, Maul seizes an opportunity to test his skills against a real Jedi but also maybe turn someone else to the dark side.

It goes without saying that Palpatine’s style of teaching is incredibly cruel, which is something we will see reflected in the way Darth Maul acts. But Maul’s encounter with Eldra is also something which we will learn has serious implications on the mastermind he will become as he tries his hand at swaying the Padawan to the Dark Side.

In any case, it should be interesting to see what the Lucasfilm Story Group does with filling in the largely-unexplored time periods (such as the period set before The Phantom Menace) as time goes on. Issue #1 of Marvel’s Darth Maul arrives in February 2017; Star Wars News Net will be sure to fill you in as we learn more.

The Tarkin novel is canon, and Palpatine references Plagueis in there and some of the events that happen in that novel.

Ah! I have not read Tarkin yet. Need to get on that lol. Well hopefully we can get an actual Panel displaying an official picture of him. Is he still a Muun?

It was like, a paragraph. He didn’t delve too deeply into it, he just kept the connection.

Plagueis I *believe* is Legends now. I think. Which means that canonically, until Palpatine referenced Plagueis in Tarkin, he was not directly connected to him as was laid out in that book. He was still just a Sith legend Palp was referencing in Episode III.

Tarkin was alright. Nothing ground breaking, but it was fun.

It is strongly implied that Palpatine was referring to Plagueis as his master in Episode III. It’s murky but I lean towards more of Plagueis is indeed canon than it is not.

Yeah, based on the way Sidious is talking and telling the story and when he’s smirking at the part where he says “ironic” I always took that as being Plagueis was his master too.

Unfortunately, we don’t know enough yet in the new canon to tell if Sidious was just telling Anakin a Sith legend or if he truly was his old master.

That conversation between Palpatine and Anakin is my favorite scene to come out of the Prequel trilogy. I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone that thinks Palpatine was NOT referring to his master when he relates that story to Anakin. While I actually kinda liked Luceno’s take on Palpatine’s origins, I’m interested to see a canonical version that falls in line with the storygroup.

I agree – thought it was enjoyable & did decent job on Tarkin. Contributes to the new canon & expands backstory of the main character.
            I’d recommend it.

            This is interesting:
“When creating the multimedia project Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, the development team looked to a number of unexplored characters and events for inspiration, amongst them Plagueis. The initial plan was to use Plagueis as a Sith spirit who would give the player of The Force Unleashed game new dark side powers and information. Another idea involved the Secret Apprentice, the main character, sent to find Plagueis as part of a plot by Darth Vader to resurrect PadmĂŠ Amidala. Still other ideas included revealing that the Apprentice was Plagueis reborn, or using a reformed Plagueis as the Apprentice’s mentor.”

As far as I understand, Darth Plagueis is killed in the canon before Darth Sidious sought out an apprentice of his own (instead of the clever little he’s-alive-during-the-events-of-TPM trick that James Luceno pulled in his Legends novel). There might be a little bit of information on him tucked into the story, though.

Enough of this f**king guy. The most overrated character in the history of Star Wars. No motivation besides, uh I’m bad and want revenge. The embodiment of the prequels, all flash no substance. Yes I am seen Clone Wars and Rebels. This does not help.

Wrong. He wants revenge because he got bested by a Padawan AND because he realised he’s been used by Sidious all his life. Hence, he looks forward to try to become himself the sith lord.

To be fair after Episode 1 I’d say most fans, myself included, thought he died off way too soon and was underused for how awesome he was. So you honestly can’t blame them when fans clamor for more of something and they deliver
