Toy Photographer’s Recreated Scenes from Star Wars Look Incredibly Real

toys4A little known toy photographer from Polomont in Falkirk, re-creates scenes from the Star Wars universe with the use of everyday store bought action figures. Check out some of his amazing photographs that have caught the attention of thousands of fans all around the world.

When the original ‘Star Wars’ film was released in 1977, the face of science fiction in popular culture was changed forever. The film not only changed movie history but it also helped launch a toy industry that forever would change an industry. Almost overnight Star Wars toys became a sensation — and children who seen the film also wanted to reenact the scenes to the movie using their toys.

Over the years, action figure have taken on various different looks, more detailed and even include a few more cool extras. However, one things remains the same, no matter how young or old you are, recreating iconic scenes from your favorite Star Wars film, even with the basic of action figures can never get old. Some people open their toys, play with them, display them or pack them away for safekeeping. However, photographer Stuart Robertson has a different plan in mind when it comes to his toys.

BBC.com caught up with Stuart, whose recreated scenes from Star Wars made it all the way to this years San Diego Comic-Con, to chat about what inspired him to photograph Star Wars action figures.

“I started out with my son’s action figures, just to give him a giggle.” he said. “I’d joined Instagram and found a community of toy photographers, which inspired me to try it myself.”

The fledgling photographer even claims he has “no clue” about the world of professional photography. He didn’t even use expensive equipment when he first started photographing his scenes.

“I began taking photos on a compact camera,”

His friends told him that he did so well that he needed to take his work to the great outdoors. So, he literally took the advice and his work to a park with a similiar landscape scene seen in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Recently, he’s been shooting various recreated scenes of his action figures at place called Beecraigs Country Park near Linlithgow.

“I got a positive response and a friend encouraged me to take shots outdoors.” Stuart said.

It hasn’t been just his friends that have caught on to his fantastic work, thousand of fans from all around the world have taken notice as well. In fact, his toy photography has attracted more than 14,000 followers on his Instagram page to date. Stuart’s done so well with his work that his photographs and original work were chosen from several hundred entries by the Hasbro toy giant for display at this years San Diego Comic Con convention last month. Yet, even though he was chosen by Hasbro, that hasn’t stopped him from trying new equipment and techniques to make things seem even more real.

“I’ve only recently been given a second-hand DSLR that I’m learning how to use. I use free apps for editing and do everything on my phone.” he said. “I have basic rules about angles and posing. I try out the pose myself, to make the composition and movement life-like.”

One would think that this kind of hobby would garner the attention of all that lives in his household. However, Stuart admits that his kids actually don’t think that his new found hobby is very exciting at all. In fact, one of them is his best critic,

“I don’t take them out when I’m taking photos. It takes a wee bit of time to set up each shot and it’s kind of boring to watch.” he said. “They like seeing the finished scene though. James is my most valued critic.”

With the new Star Wars spin-off in ‘Rogue One’ just around the corner, here’s to hoping that Stuart will recreate some scenes from that film as well. The force is definitely strong with this photographer.

Nice headline. You wouldn’t think that it’s because they are real, would you?
