Star Wars Databank: Jedha is a Permanently Frozen Desert Moon + Other New Bits and Official Rogue One Synopsis!

Death TrooperThe Star Wars Databank is a section on the official Star Wars site, source of massive knowledge and data about everything from the galaxy far, far away. Recently the Rogue One section has been updated with new info, giving us a new insight on some of the aspects of the story.

Some of the info has been mentioned before, but there are a few interesting tiny bits here and there. It’s a good read to get you hyped for Thursday!

Donnie YenJedha

A small desert moon frosted by a permanent winter, Jedha is home to one of the first civilizations to explore the nature of the Force. At one time a world important to the Jedi Order, Jedha serves as a holy site for pilgrims from across the galaxy who seek spiritual guidance. Now, the Empire occupies Jedha, and a prolonged battle between Imperial forces and scattered Rebels carries on in the timeworn streets.

This permanent winter explains Captain Cassian’s clothing.

Rogue One Death TroopersImperial Death Troopers

The elite soldiers of Imperial Intelligence, Death Troopers are encased in specialized stormtrooper armor with a dark, ominous gleam. These soldiers serve as bodyguards and enforcers for Director Krennic, a highly placed officer within the Advanced Weapons Research division of the Empire.

k2soK-2SO (Kay-Tuesso)

A reprogrammed Imperial security droid now loyal to the Alliance, K-2SO is an alarming sight standing within a secret Rebel base. The pragmatic droid is an effective insertion agent, as he can blend in perfectly at Imperial installations and outposts.

Chirrut ImweChirrut Îmwe

Deeply spiritual, Chirrut Îmwe believes all living things are connected through the Force. His sightless eyes do not prevent him from being a highly skilled warrior. Though he lacks Force abilities, this warrior monk has rigorously honed his body through intense physical and mental discipline.

Rogue One Wen 02Baze Malbus

The harsh reality of his Imperial-occupied home world has hardened Baze Malbus into a pragmatic soldier and a crack shot with his heavy repeater cannon. Baze has a bravado that provides a marked contrast to the spiritual centeredness of his best friend and moral compass, Chirrut Îmwe.

Rogue One KrennicDirector Orson Krennic

As director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military, Orson Krennic is obsessed with the completion of the long-delayed Death Star project. A cruel but brilliant man, Krennic has staked his reputation on the delivery of the functional battle station to the Emperor.

The biggest question still remains: Will we see Palpatine in Rogue One? I think there is a very big possibility.

rogue oneShoretroopers

Specialist stormtroopers stationed at the top secret Imperial military headquarters on Scarif, Shoretroopers patrol the beaches and bunkers of the planetary facility.

starwarsrogueoneScarif

The planet Scarif would be a beautiful tropical paradise if not for the presence of a major Imperial military installation. Scarif is the principal construction facility for the vast Imperial war machine. The world is enveloped in impenetrable deflector shields and is heavily defended.

at-act-walkerAT-ACT walker

A larger version of the standard combat AT-AT, the AT-ACT walker features a dedicated cargo bed for the transportation of heavy building materials or combat munitions. It was deployed at major Imperial construction projects, such as shipyards and sprawling research installations.

Even larger than the regular AT-AT? Super cool!

Saw GerreraSaw Gerrera

A battered veteran of the Clone Wars as well as the ongoing rebellion against the Empire, Saw Gerrera leads a band of Rebel extremists. Saw has lost much in his decades of combat, but occasional flashes of the charismatic and caring man he once was shine through his calloused exterior. Gerrera is bunkered on the ancient world of Jedha, coordinating a prolonged insurgency against the Imperial occupation. Saw’s ailing health has not withered his resolve to fight.

From previously revealed information we know that Jyn and Cassian go to Jedha to recruit an important member for their team. At first I thought they are there after Chirrut Îmwe, whose home planet is Jedha, but perhaps they are actually after Saw, stationed in the bunker. It would be interesting to see if Saw will be only the mentor type of character, or he will take part in the battle (something we haven’t seen any indications about).

Rogue One BodhiBodhi Rook

A former Imperial pilot, Bodhi has strong piloting and technical skills that he will put to use for the Rebellion. Ever practical, but highly anxious, Bodhi must gather his courage to bring the battle to the Empire.

U-WingU-wing

A sturdy troop transport and gunship used by the Rebel Alliance, the U-wing starfighter is a well-armed swing-wing vessel that must penetrate heavy fire zones to deposit soldiers onto battlefields and then fly air support during dangerous missions against the Empire.

The last two additions are worded very interesting. So far we haven’t seen any indications that there will be a space battle in Rogue One. We’ve seen some hints on LEGO packages but nothing concrete. So according to this Bodhi will bring the battle to the Empire, and we know that the U-Wing is used to deposit soldiers and then fly air support against the Empire. This could probably mean that Bodhi will take some space action piloting an U-Wing, or it could mean that he will take the battle to the Empire by just depositing the troops on the battlefield. But what is Star Wars without space battles?

What do you think? Are we going to see Bodhi Rook and his piloting skill in action? Or he will be more like a transport guy? Tell us in the comments below.

Special thanks to @BoyleJayhawk for the heads up.

RogueOne4

Also the Disney fan site Stitch Kingdom uncovered the official Rogue One synopsis that was just released, ahead of the trailer premiere:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

I think Space Monkey is going to die 🙁

I think he’s on that U-Wing… giving support fire when it gets shot out of the sky and crashes. It’ll be a powerful moment if they do it right… because Space Monkey is awesome!

I honestly think most will die, maybe two of them will make it out at best.

I’m going in assuming they all die because they’re putting everything of themselves on the line to accomplish this, knowing certain death awaits whether this mission succeeds OR fails. If they all die (maybe a survivor) it will show the high price of the galactic civil war in the most visceral way, on a level we’ve rarely actually seen [onscreen] in a Star Wars movie. I’m hoping to be wrong about the body count… I know I’m going to get attached to a lot of these characters.

      Agree.

Think a few of the band of Rebels make it off Scarif with Bodhi Rook stealing and piloting an Imperial vessel (as their U-Wing is now destroyed), Jyn transmits the Death Star Plans to the Rebels just before their spacecraft is destroyed by an Imperial Star Destroyer.

    Shoretroopers:

“Specialist stormtroopers stationed at the top secret Imperial military headquarters on Scarif…”

Confirms that in the teaser trailer scene of the band of rebels being chased by Imperial forces (inc Shoretroopers) that look like a subway station, is actually set in Scarif’s major Imperial military installation.

Between the connective tissue between PT and OT we already know, including a certain Alderaanian cameo, here’s hoping there will indeed be a Palpatine appearance!

Anyone else notice that the Deathtroopers totally have the same silvery speaker-belt-buckle thing that Vader does?

  • August 10, 2016 at 7:47 pm

Anyone else notice that the Death Troopers’ silver belt buckle device is almost identical to Vader’s? Just seems to be missing the dial. That and their hight suggests to me that they are meant to emulate or at least parallel Vader’s appearance, perhaps as a fear tactic.

That and their hight suggests to me that they are meant to emulate or at least parallel Vader’s appearance, perhaps as a fear tactic or a power play on Krennic’s part.

Would be pretty clever to surround himself with a bunch of pseudo-Vaders as a counterpoint to Vader’s shadowy oversight and power statement.

Well that answers the question about why the death troopers aren’t around anymore – they are basically his private security

Interesting thought, but if this is tied with ANH’s beginning, will there be a Leia, or will Bail be the one handed the Death Star plans?

    • August 10, 2016 at 8:52 pm
      Permalink

Bail could conceivably be around, but we know from Vader’s ANH dialog that the plans were transmitted remotely. A reasonable scenario was presented in episode 2 of the Star Wars radio series. My personal assumption is that penultimate scene of the film will be a 300-esque last stand in a communication room, with the survivors trying to transmit the plans to Leia’s ship before they’re captured or killed.

According to Leia’s hologram, Bail was on Alderaan at the beginning of ANH. She’s trying to get the plans to him.

It’s probably the last thing to get finished in effects so I’m not too concerned. But yeah, a space battle would be nice.

Well, as a kid and growing up since ROTJ, I always imagined the Bothan spies in space battle during some of they’re dangerous undertakings. I’m thinking they have to infiltrate the death star and get their hands on the plans and then escape so there could be one hell of a pursuit space battle. Hopefully my imagining will become reality.

i know, but its still a little funny. i think the opening crawl in ANH tells us more about this film then this synopsis does. also, we know at least one character that dies… 😉

Don’t see how he could’ve thought they were going to Jedha to recruit Chirrut. I thought it was obvious they’d be looking for Saw based off the information provided to us. As far as we can tell to date, Chirrut and his friend are “nobodies”. But I wouldn’t put it past Mon Mothma to know about Saw and request that her agents go seek him out for his aid

    • August 10, 2016 at 9:12 pm
      Permalink

yeah, I always got the sense that the Rebellion command knew Saw was on Jedha so they send them there for him. I just assumed Chirrut and Baze (and the Two Tube twins) are actually part of Saw’s army.

Scarif has a planetary shield around it, that’s AWESOME.

Interesting. I hope Jeddah is visually interesting. I’ve seen enough icy wasteland shots from Hoth and Stakiller Base. I hope something about it makes it feel like the a Jedi holy place, maybe some giant statues like the valley of the Jedi from the EU. Idk, I’m just tired of all the wastelands (both desert and ice). I know geologically it makes sense, but I’m more excited for scarif since that sounds like something very visually distinctive and something we haven’t seen much in star wars

It’d be really cool to see some more of Alderaan. Since Bail is in it, maybe we’ll get to, but it’ll probably just be another glimpse like ROTS. I’d also really like to see Corellia in the new canon; hopefully in the Han Solo movie!
