Even More Rogue One Photos from Entertainment Weekly!

Rogue One 07

Entertainment Weekly decided to wrap up their coverage on Rogue One this week with yet another set of photos from the production. Check them out…

The previous story on Mon Mothma was supposed to be the last one of EW’s coverage on Rogue One from this week. But because of the great interest and fan reactions around the web, Anthony Breznican and company decided to share even more with all of us:

From EW:

Rogue One 01

The movie will feature never-before-seen vehicles, like the fang-toothed TIE Strikers (featured on our cover image), as well as some sinister new classes of Stormtroopers — like the black-masked Deathtrooper pictured here. Storywise, what became of these designs during later years of the galactic conflict? Were they experimental models? Will the Rebel victory be so complete that the Empire never uses them again?

Rogue One 02

This shot of Donnie Yen’s blind warrior-monk, Chirrut Imwe, gives us a good look at a new kind of weapon on his back. In the trailer, we see him face down a Stormtrooper using only a wooden staff. (No laser sword for him!) But the device slung on his back looks unusually ornamental for a mere blaster.

Rogue One 03

Here we see Diego Luna’s Capt. Cassian Andor in the beach battle alongside some fellow Rebel soldiers. Director Gareth Edwards says there are at least two background creatures who fight with the squad, but they aren’t major characters.

Rogue One 04

While Chirrut puts his faith in the Force, Jiang Wen’s hard-bitten soldier, Baze Malbus, clearly believes more in the force of firepower. Here we see him taking up position beside a crashed X-wing fighter, toting a blaster that’s linked up to a massive power pack on his back.

Rogue One 05

The filmmakers say he’s [Luna’s character] the reliable, stable one who counters her loose-cannon tendencies, sort of Murtaugh to her Riggs. No doubt Jyn and Cassian form a trust and a friendship, but does that always have to mean romance?

Rogue One 06

This is a behind-the-scenes shot, showing Baze, Chirrut, and a squad of Rebel fighters storming the beach. The helicopter camera is a surprising element, however, because it’s not typically the kind of shot we’ve seen before in a Star Wars film, which tend to be more classically composed.

Diego Luna’s is literally dressed as a colonial viper pilot from old school Battlestar Galactica.

I think it looks much more SW the BG. Anyways, BG just ripped off tons of the SW aesthetic.

It’s not a criticism. I think the costume looks great (in fact I was contemplating recreating it for Celebration next year). It is uncannily similar to the BSG uniforms, though. It also looks a lot like Han’s outfit in TFA — same cut of pants & shirt.

And I want a better look at the holster – the gunbelt is more like a Jedi PT belt, but from what I can see there, I wouldn’t be surprised if the holster itself is also from the Han TFA costume.

    Shaky-cam? Seriously?

I sh** you not, if they lay a bunch of shaky-cam crap on us, I’ll get up and walk out of the damned theater, Star Wars or not. Not only does that idiocy give me motion sickness, but it’s also the mark of lazy, half-assed filmmakers who can’t be bothered to create tension using traditional storytelling methods. “Screw it, let’s just fake some onscreen tension by shaking the camera around.”

Even in battle scenes, it’s a cheap cop-out and it looks like garbage.

I REALLY hope the shaky-cam rumors are just rumors…

    • June 25, 2016 at 3:47 am
      Permalink

A moderator having a bitch? You should be revoked. This is a war film, emotions are high…they want the audience to feel immersed in what’s happening and what better way to display the intensity and seriousness of the battle scene than some shaky cam action? I mean really, it’s not like it’s going to take up the majority of the film (obviously “ahem” trailer) but it could positively add to that grittiness that they are going for in this movie. Personally, I can’t wait to see this new style of filming in a SW setting.

      (Don’t ban me haha)

        BAN HIM!
Jokes aside… shaky cam never bothers me unless it literally starts making the action hard to follow. That’s when you’ve gone to far.

      • June 25, 2016 at 6:27 pm
        Permalink

War films = shaky-cam? Not until relatively recently. Plenty of classic war flicks were made long before “shake the camera to simulate tension” became the lazy cinematographer’s default style.

Any fool can jiggle a camera around. A solid script, brought to life by a true actors’ director and a top-notch editor can create genuine tension in a way that the shaky-cam gimmick can’t even begin to touch.

It’s junk filmmaking and always has been.

        • June 25, 2016 at 6:32 pm
          Permalink

The real issue for me is that it seems to make directors and cinematographers think they are excused from properly conveying a sense of geography and relative location to a given sequence. Just cut together a bunch of seemingly unrelated jittery, way to close up shots of actors doing…stuff and call it a fight scene.

To be fair, yes, it was successfully used in a film. Twenty years ago. The real problem is that ever since then shaky-cam seems to inevitably be combined with a modern penchant for pushing the camera WAY to close to the characters and with quick cuts. Each can, if employed skillfully and with restraint, impart some energy to a sequence. It’s a case though of, if you just do them all to ramp it up to 11, brah!, the sum being considerably less than the individual parts.

Did they say shaky cam? Or did they just say handheld? Because there’s a big difference.

      • June 25, 2016 at 9:20 am

Nobody actually calls it shaky-cam. The description however seems to imply it pretty heavily. God how I hope I’m misreading it…

        • June 25, 2016 at 5:10 pm
          Permalink

Looking at Godzilla footage, it seems Edwards uses handhelds pretty judiciously. He’s certainly no Greengrass.

I’m more concerned about the inevitable color correction. Why does Hollywood hate natural-looking colors?

I really don’t think they’ll do that. I certainly hope not. It looked interesting back when The Matrix and Gattaca were doing it but it’s become one of the most overused stylistic techniques.

Much like shaky cam was kind of interesting when Saving Private Ryan used it to make the beach assault look like the archival footage taken by news cameramen but now every action scene has to be some confusing close up mess.

Yeah, tons of bad movies and series like Fury Road, The Dark Knight, Breaking Bad… Sometimes color grading can be a good thing you know. It always depends on how its implemented.

You mean, making everything look completely washed out, or worse yet, making everything look yellow?

Yeah, that’s another cheap filmmaking gimmick (“Gotta make this scene look GRITTY somehow…”) that comes off like amateur hour nonsense. It doesn’t bug me as much as the shaky-cam thing does, but it wore real thin with me a long time ago.

It would really depend on how the technique is employed and how sparingly it is used. I thought Captain America: Civil War made good use of it in the film’s opening sequence. We’ll see. It’s definitely one that has been abused before though.

    • June 25, 2016 at 5:20 pm

Episode 4 had some shaky cam. Trash compactor scene for instance. I seem to recall an interview with Lucas where he said he liked to use the technique to make audience members feel part of the action. Done with taste it can be effective, but too much is jarring.

There are a couple of shots where they emphasized explosions by either shaking the camera for a moment or, if they didn’t do it on set for whatever reason, rocking the film in the gate (Han in the gunner chair for example – it looks like poop because it wasn’t shot that way). That’s not shooting whole sequences that way, and it’s really, REALLY different from Shaky-Cam though.

Well, since the Deathtroopers sound like they are a unique unit under the personal command of Krrenic(? God, these names are BAD), and since he hates Vader? Probably no significance. When the inevitable visual dictionary is published however, I’m sure it will reference something like Vader’s atmospherically sealed suit. Well, they retroactively added women troopers to the era so it would make sense for there to be mixed sex squads. Makes sense since there doesn’t seem to be the sexist attitude towards women in that universe so much as there is in our own. Where did they retroactively add women troopers? I know there was a female stormtrooper (in addition to Phasma) in TFA but that’s 30+ years later and the FO generally seems to have a more mixed officer class but I put that down to them being subtly different to the Empire.

The more I see of this thing, the more I have to say the design of the film is already looking miles better than TFA. Blasters look like blasters, the new TKs look like they belong in the same universe as all the OT TKs…just…perfect. Well I think both movies make sense in terms of design. this movie has stuff closer to the origtrig because it’s like within a year of it instead of like 20 years. That being said I thought I’d hate these new stormies and actually like their designs a lot. It does however raise the question how they’re going to kick them out of the picture or explain why these elite black troopers were never seen hunting down our heroes in the other movies

I partially agree, but I still get a sense of maybe trying too hard to be awesome. They have to be careful not to diminish the OT, especially ANH. Eye candy or not, I mostly hope for a great story set in my favorite fantasy world that doesn’t have too much stupid action or pop culture BS.

So in essence: this is a Battlefront movie. No compelling story or engaging characters, just stuff getting blown up? Every Star Wars movie has war in it, what makes this one so ‘special’? Apart from the flimsy story, it’s an excuse to give us more OT stormtroopers and Vader?

I saw it a couple of years ago and I can confirm, it’s all about more OT stormtroopers and Vader blowing stuff up together.

If that’s what it is I’ll be disappointed. It’s ridiculous to pretend we know anything NEAR enough to say that’s the case, though. On the other hand…

      – Jyn looks like a compelling lead (yes, I even like the “I rebel” line, bite me).
      – It sounds like there will be Imperial political intrigue with Vader and Krennic competing for favor.
      – The rebels aren’t united — Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma represent two extremes that must be reconciled.
      – Although I fear his character may be a bit of a cliché — Donnie Yen vs Vader, anyone?

I sorta wish they saved these trooper designs for the FO storm troopers instead of what we got in TFA..they look more “futuristic” and different (which would match a new time period) it’s also way more menacing..

TFA was all about cashing on fan service and nostalgia, there was no placefor innovation and risks. All the ships should have been upgraded just like the prequels ships were more retro. We had the destroyers and X-wing predecessors, TFA should have made their successors.

TFA DID make successors though I agree that in order to make us Star Wars geeks feel at home again, things it some or many ways had to mirror the originals. I enjoyed TFA quite a bit, but I would be blind if I didn’t see the similarities between it and ANH.

Regarding the designs looking too similar, it is the natural progression of things. Keep in mind our own technology. Look back say 35 years ago at the jets we used compared to today. The looks in many circumstances are not radically different, though the hardware that they use is. Also, some designs are used for many years. Some people suspect that the B52 may see it’s 100th year in service, which is not completely unthinkable.

I blame Mon Monthma and how the New Republic didn’t feel a need to keep the military well equipped. The resistance is mostly just scrapping old ships and modifying as needed

“All the ships should have been upgraded…”

How do you know they weren’t? Just because they looked similar doesn’t mean they didn’t have greatly upgraded systems. And really, in a galaxy that has had interstellar travel for thousands of years, how much technological innovation would you expect to see over a mere 30 years?

When I say upgraded I mean not just technically but their shape should have evolved just like the F-16 was evolved into the F-22 and F-35. But I know JJ Abrams wanted to play with the old toys. The Millenium Falcon shouldn’t even exist anymore, it was a piece of junk in ANH, but it looked like it came out of the production line in TFA.

They did evolve. If you would have calmed down and seen through your red haze of rage because of a female lead, you’d have noticed some distinct differences between the X-Wings and the TIE Fighters. Regarding the Falcon: have you ever seen junky old cars nursed through some bad years, only to go to pot before being restored and brought back to life? I’m sure you have. So why can’t this apply to the Falcon. Which, by the way, hardly looked like it rolled off the factory floor in TFA.

The Falcon was already a piece of junk in ANH and it regularly stalled and had to be constantly maintained in ESB and ROTJ. Yet in TFA we have the same Falcon rotting in the desert, that’s not the best condition, it hasn’t flown for years but it starts immediatly when Rey puts her magical butt on the cockpit seat and starts doing acrobatics Han Solo and Chewie combined would never dream of! But that’s okay, she can do aaaaaaaaaaaaaanything, even with less than a piece of junk she seemingly knows everything about better than Solo!

Unkar Plutt made several modifications so you can assume he used the ship even though Rey might not recall it. It’s like an old Motorcycle that you constantly have to repair yet still works years after you bought it. I don’t see any problem there, one would assume that a ship that is capable of interstellar flight has a longer lifespan than a real world Fiat. I mean Lukes Xwing could still be used even after it sunk in a swamp…

No , if you let your motorcycle rotting in the desert without driving it for years, your added equipment is a waste of money and time because the engine won’t even start, let alone allow you to pull stunts. Upgrading the Falcon didn’t make any sense since it is abandonned, the only reason was to justify a scen where Rey outsmarts Han Solo about his own ship, because feminism! What man does, girl can do better is their motto

As I said, what you know about our vehicles certainly does not apply to the futuristic technology of Star Wars. Ancient Sith temples that have been abandoned for millenias still work and no one bats an eye. Why make such a drama about the Falcon? Btw what you interpret as “femisism” is simply a gifted charcter who happens to have breasts. I feel sorry for you if that irritates you. Must be really hard to accept that someone who has been scavanging space ship equipment during her whole life is better at fixing things than someone who is primarily a smuggler.

No, the OT showed us that the Falcon was a piece of junk that needs constantly to be fixed just like an old car, and it was supposed to be the case about 30 years prior to TFA. Just imagine in what state it should be if it wasn’t even flown and waiting in the desert! The Falcon scene was just plain stupid.
Girl power being rubbed in the viewer’s face at every turn is feminism laced with misandry as every male in the movie is dumber than a broomstick. Rey piloting skill are beyond ridiculous, even Han Solo helped by Chewie wouldn’t pull her stunts, but that’s okay, she has a vagina, but breasts I’m not sure.

The same amount of technological innovation we got from the 18 year gap between the PT and the OT…
Put it this way..another example of what looks and feels like it would be a futuristic design without drifting too far from the original, is the tie striker that’s in RO..imagine that bad boy chasing the falcon instead of a regular looking tie fighter that’s just painted black and red.

Probably not the right spot but I’m going to pose a theory on Rey and Snoke. If indeed the story goes that there was a brother and sister and a tree and that Rey is the first Jedi, I’m going to argue that Snoke was the brother and the first dark user of the Force. He became so fearful of death, he found ways to keep himself alive. Hence, the body we see in TFA is Snoke as he looked in his original form. He fears death as do all Sith. The Jedi give themselves willingly to the Force and hence Rey’s return. This trilogy could actually end up being about a brother and his sister and the ultimate battle between light and dark. The rumor is that their family travelled to this planet. Perhaps they were travellers and “walked” the “skies” – if you get my meaning.

Interesting theory but maybe a bit too esoteric for the average moviegoer. Personally I already had a somewhat hard time watching the lost episodes of the clone wars with the priestesses of the force and that force planet. while visually stunning (for an animated series) it had a weird feeling to it. I am ok with that arc now that I have seen it a second time but I don’t think that the average SW viewer would appreciate such a mythological approach to the new trilogy.
