Producer Frank Marshall Says Harrison Ford Is The One And Only Indiana Jones
Producer Frank Marshall couldn’t see any other actor than Harrison Ford in the role of Indiana Jones. He expressed confidence in the return of Ford in the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones episode, noting he was the only man for the role.
When speaking with Variety at CinemaCon on Monday in Las Vegas, Marshall said the next installment will be a continuation of the “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” film. The producer also dismissed the idea that Ford was too old to play the swashbuckling archaeologist.
Senior film and media writer Brent Lang from Variety asked Marshall about continuing “Indiana Jones” for even more sequels, he said it may just happen.
“It’s all about the story. I think both in the ‘Jason Bourne’ series and on ‘Indiana Jones,’ we are not going to do the Bond thing,” Marshall said, referring to rotating different actors through the title roles in the two franchises that he oversees. “We think those characters are iconic, and those are the only actors who can play that.”
The veteran producer also said, the actor delivered a confident return to duty as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, a film produced by his wife and Lucasfilms chief Kathy Kennedy.
Ford, recently opened up about his return to “Indiana Jones” while visiting Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month. Kimmel brought up Ford’s past resistance to putting back on Indy’s hat and asked if he had agreed to return because the powers-at-be had come up with an idea he loved.
“I haven’t read the script,” said Ford, before joking, “I’m talking about the contract!” So big bucks aside, why’d he decide to do it? “The opportunity to work with Steven (Spielberg) again, and the chance to revisit this character which has brought pleasure to so many people — not to mention me,” he said. “It’s great fun to play this character, it’s great fun to work with Steven,” he added. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Marshall went on to say that it was “pretty sweet” to be returning to a series that introduced him to director Steven Spielberg and to his future wife, Kathleen Kennedy, now president of “Star Wars” maker Lucasfilm. Of the Indiana Jones sequel, he added,
“We’re just getting the deal together and planning to bring on a writer. It’s going to be two to three years. This will be an original idea; but we have the character and it’s not prequel but continuing since the last one.”
The Producer who founded Amblin Entertainment with Spielberg is preparing to direct again – a rare feature of his career – and was lining up The Longest Night, based on a Baltic Sea coastal rescue story.

Seriously? Again with the Indiana Jones news on this site? -_-
I get that some SW fans like Indy but geez, we don’t exactly need it here. And to me, the Indy franchise is nothing more that fun adventure movies. I’m no fanboy that tries to make it something more/bigger than what it really is #SorryNotSorry
Piss off wanker.
Nah
Flagged for disagreeing with another poster.
Guess how many people care what the franchise means to you – go on, guess! Come on, you’ll never get it, this is so fun!
I think Marsha is now my least favorite commenter on this site.
I have yet to see anything positive stem from this person’s posts. At least you Mr_Crankypants will acknowledge both positive and negative opinions from others, and then at least try to refute that with your own knowledge.
Marshas logic goes like this:
If it isn’t Marsha’s way, then it shouldn’t be anyone’s way. Seriously!!! Why? Why, are they doing this, why why why???
I’m right, you’re all wrong!
Hey, I’m opinionated, for which I make no apologies, but I’m not blind.
There is even a tab at the top middle of the page specifically dedicated to Indy news. And that’s the way we like it. #SorryNotSorry. 🙂
Indy has always been closely linked to Star Wars being that it is a George Lucas creation, made by Lucasfilm and had many of the same production people throughout. There have even been Star Wars books with Indiana Jones sections. I can only assume you are a new fan to be some blissfully unaware of how closely linked they are.
Also, wasn’t it you that said a few days ago that I didn’t speak for you (even though I wasn’t purporting to)? Well, guess what sweetcheeks, you don’t speak for us either.
By this logic, I guess the SWNN staff should post articles and reviews on non-Indy and non-SW IP’s then.
Bring on the reviews for Howard the Duck, Labyrinth, Willow, Red Tails, American Graffiti (parts 1 and 2), etc SWNN staff!
Sure, why not?
If it means watching you behaving so ridiculously then it’s probably worth it for that reason alone.
Well then, you have problems!
And what problem would that be dearest?
Disagreeing with her is a problem, apparently. I have a feeling that Marsha is a 3rd wave feminist.
I have a feeling ‘she’s’ really just a recently-departed-in-a-huff previous poster.
Lora, anyone? Maybe she learned how to spoken and returned for vengeance.
Flagged for accusing others of having problems while being blissfully, comically, ironically unaware of your own.
Wait, I think it was deleted before I saw it, but I got to see it in plain text. Did she seriously flag someone for disagreeing? Marsha, do you seriously live in a perfect little world where people need to all agree with eachother or else it’s a capital offense? I’d HATE to live there.
BOOM! You’re wish is my command, kimosabe. Flagged, MFr!
D=
Flagged for the wrong spelling of “your”!
Shit, I’ve been doing that all “dam” day I’ve noticed. Still, flagged for being a grammar Nazi.
Flagged for not having a comma after “day”.
Actually, it appears that he has the opposite of a problem.
Look who’s talking -_-
Now we’re talking. lol. Currently there is not enough Indy news to warrant a sister site…but that’s not out of the realm of possibility for the future. 🙂
MSW, your SW rival fansite, made one (called MakingIndy.net) despite not much Indy news coming out at the moment. It’s not hard, you just have to have determination/motivation to want to do so.
If this is such big issue for you, just stop coming here. I love Indy and I will continue to post stories about it here. I am not going to milk a whole new site for this.
If A) it’s an LFL joint and B) there’s news? Why not?
In a way I agree, but come on, does 1 article out of 100 really upset you that much?
Over the extensive span of 4 days that she’s been here? Yes, yes it does.
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. Feel free not to click on the Indiana Jones story tab.
If you don’t like it, don’t read it. we don’t need to hear your whining.

Seems to me this is old news – didn’t Marshall give this interview back before the fifth movie was announced? In any event, I think he’s half right – Ford is the only actor for Indy (Bourne though? I can’t see how that character is tied to the actor, but whatevs). I’m not convinced that means it’s time to move forward with Indy 5.
I think what upsets me is that this is evidence that nobody wants to let go of the past. Yes, he’s this iconic character. Yes, he’s the only one that’s ever had the role on the big screen. I don’t think this should be true forever. There should come a time where we try something new with a new actor in a new situation.
What upsets me is that nobody at Disney seems willing to take a chance on a new hero. To paraphrase – “Let it go…let it goooo, you can start a new franchise anytime…let it gooo….”. Indy on the big screen is DONE, and I say that as a kid who grew up with him, own my gear, including two hand made Raiders beaver hats. But it’s time, Disney. Put this energy into trying to develop a new hero, and a new universe.
We can only have one Lucas, my guess…It´s hard to come with something new….and succesful
One day soon, I think. I have a feeling that once the MCU and Star Wars wrap up, we’ll be out of the remake age and start to see some new IPs pop up, from more than just Disney. It won’t be profitable forever, especially once the only thing left to rehash are the rehashes.
I’m afraid I’ll probably be dead by then.
Some fresh ideas would be nice. But it wouldn’t surprise if they remade all the Star Wars movies and then all the Marvel movies again, at some point in my lifetime.
And with a new name. Say…..Nathan Drake?
I have an idea. How about we let Indiana Jones rest and just come up with a NEW idea for a film? Those are fun once in a while, right? It certainly sounds better to me than destroying several people’s childhoods by recasting a role that shouldn’t be recast
Shame they don’t have this attitude over Han Solo….
he’s also the one and only han solo, disney
I would love another 2 Indy films for an older Jones trilogy.
too bad at LFL they don’t have the same attitude regarding Han Solo…
Couldn’t agree more.
I only hope it won’t be as shitty as “Crystal skull”. Previous Indiana Jones movies were and are still enjoyable – “Crystall skull” is just dumb and annoying.
Folks complaining again why the Indy stuff is on here? See exibit A. Mic drop*
Wouldn’t mind seeing a bearded Indiana Jones again. Harrison Ford’s current beard really suits him.
Sallah is the man!!
And why they just can´t go that way with Han Solo??????????????
EDIT: I see now I´m not the only one thinking this….
I’m just going to leave these right here (to debunk myths, deception, and misinformation)…
[I consider a 6 or above as a “like” and “good” at minimum]
And Revenge of the Sith has a 79% percent. That doesn’t mean that it’s not utter shite. Sorry 😉
And that’s your OPINION about it (and it’s just that, an opinion from someone in the loud and vocal hating minority). And no, I’m not getting into a discussion about that with anyone so don’t you or anyone else try to rile up fans on here because I’m not responding anyone on that matter.
Stay on topic and talk Indiana Jones only if you’re going to comment on a Indy-specific thread that’s in a Indy-specific article (which sounds a bit contradicting of me as I prefer to see SW articles on here only but whatever, this article is here).
Now you’re just trolling.
Sorry Marsha, but I can talk about pretty much anything, and you don’t have any power to stop me, only the MODS of this site do. So with that said, what are your opinions on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?
Wait, I thought we weren’t allowed to talk about Indiana Jones here. But…but you ARE willing to allow us to now? What, like as a special treat?
Man, because your opinion is end-all-be-all objective science, eh?
NO, but there’s a general consensus among most people that the movie is bad. Don’t get offended just because I didn’t put “DISCLAIMER: These are all MY OPINION!”.
You should be smart enough to figure that part out.
See, what you’re being shown is that there’s demonstrably NOT a general consensus that the movie is bad…outside of whiny fan boys.
And literally everyone I’ve ever asked in person. And believe me, I’ve asked a LOT of people. A lot of people.
Do you really think Revenge of the Sith is “utter shite”? I thought for the most part it was very, very good.
There were some good parts, but they totally fucked up Anakin’s turn to the dark side, and the effects are seriously terrible.
How did they screw it up…can you read George’s mind?
It wasn’t subtle in any way. Palpatine pretty much goes
“You killed someone in a fit of anger. Therefore, you’re evil now. Slaughter some children!”
And even though Anakin just wanted to save his wife, he somehow accepts that he’s super evil just because he accidentally killed one Jedi.
Okay, hold on a sec, TUD. You CAN’T on the one hand try and shut down anyone who says they didn’t like TFA by going “110% RT SO YOU KNOW IT’S GOOD!!! EAT A DICK!” and THEN go “Meh, RT means nothing…if I don’t like the movie.”.
I would explain the nuance of the situation, but I have a feeling you really wouldn’t care. so instead, I’ll say what you’re already thinking.
“It’s only bad when it goes against my opinion!!”
Exactly! I don’t get the movie’s hate!
Only Indiana Jones? So Young Indy is no longer canon anymore?
Or River Phoenix in The Last Crusade?
Good point! So “Last Crusade” isn’t canon then?!
It better not be! Though I can see them releasing edited versions out in 2018.
My thoughts exactly.
It’s funny yet sad how great old timers like him and Sebastian Shaw literally got written out of continuity and you can only find their work on degraded VHS now.
Young Indy is still canon, and you can buy the chronicles on dvd/ blu-ray.
I own the entire series but the old Indy parts are edited out. I don’t think it’s on BD yet either.
They need to make some new Indy comics.
As a non-comic reader, I totally agree.
Games. I want more GAMES.
And he’s NOT the one and only Han Solo??!
He’s the one and only OLD MAN Han Solo. If they were doing a reboot or prequel Indi movie, no doubt they’d get a new actor. Since they’re doing a continuation, sure they can’t get a new Old Man Indi. The Han Solo movie is a prequel, you can’t cast Old Man Ford as Recruit Solo.
I seriously wish they would just cancel Young Han Solo.
Probably would upset Lawrence Kasdan, he wrote the screenplay.
I kind of agree with you. However, I once thought Rogue One was a terrible idea, but now I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully whatever movie they make, they’ll do it well.
I completely disagree. Mostly because it’s not even in production yet and we don’t even know what it looks like yet, or even what the story will be. An origin story? A cataclystic adventure? Both sound great!
Harrison may be the iconic Han, but I don’t think he should be the only Han. I think there’s enough room for other actors to bring something to the role.
Of course it will tie into the spice shipment. Which will also just happen to coincide with the Kessel Run…oh, and a spunky love interest, who teaches Han about the true meaning of friendship, but then gets herself killed, causing him to become a cynical, cocky, bastard. Honestlty, Lord and Miller give me the only hope I have for this project not being a giant cluster fuck, but they’re no doubt going to be restricted to things Disney tells them they want to see.
.
The Joker on film though is an interpretation of a comic book character. Any new Han Solo is going to be trying to inhabit a character created by a real human being on film. Those are very different things.
I don’t think Disney will have much say in the production. They didn’t with 7, and they didn’t with the MCU. I too have hope that Lord and Miller will give us a fun, inventive product.
I knew that argument would come up. Think of it this way: when the Burton Batman movie came out, it redefined the series as well as the perception of superhero comics in general, giving us a new take on characters we knew before and setting a new standard. When Star Wars came out, it redefined scifi and space operas in general, giving us a new take on the character frameworks we knew before and setting a new standard. When it came time to make more, people will focus on the most current standard and anything trying to become better will have to focus on it.
Please wait until about 12 hours from now until you start ripping my argument apart, I’m very sleepy and I’ll have had my coffee by then.
I agree with the top part. The last sentence about Hayden was annoying. It wasn’t Hayden’s fault he was a new actor, George chosen him, George had shitty direction with actors, along with piss poor 1st draft writing.
Yeah, looking back that was an unfair comparison. Though what I was going for moreso was “we won’t get a situation in which an actor is chosen haphazardly and poorly directed”, as opposed to “we won’t get a bad actor”.
Actually, I’ve changed my mind. Alden Ehrenreich is apparently the front runner, and I think he looks good as young Han Solo. The recasting of Solo was the only reservation I had, so I’m good now.
Lucasfilm are making a Han Solo film without Harrison Ford. Looks out bedroom window…. yup, still spinning.
