That Stormtrooper Vs. Finn scene is something that if I’d seen in the theater for the first time, I’d been like “Whoooooooaaaaa!” So where does that thing pop out of? A compartment on it’s arm or back? Or out of a rifle?

The return of the word “hell” to Star Wars.

That always threw me for a loop as a kid. Obviously they are just using it as an expression rather then in a religious context, but I am constantly pulled out of the film for a second to think “Hell” is thing a galaxy far far away. Particularly since death in SW has always been seen as “transforming into the force” rather then a heaven/hell situation. – but there I go again overthinking things lol.

I just assumed there are about six million religions in TGFFA, and some of them are likely to have a hell of some sort.

When Han yelled “Then I’ll see you in hell!” this was exactly what he was doing: using the word in its religious context. Obviously not everyone in the galaxy believes in the Force, much less are they familiar with the Jedi and their ways. Han himself was the perfect example of this throughout most of the OT.

That’s definitely Finn at the village massacre. If you slow it down you see the central trooper looking around bewildered, shocked by the carnage it seems. Must be one of his turning points in deciding to desert the First Order. Also curious what happened after ROTJ that nondescript troopers have lightsaber defense weapons??

Its possible that the First Order thought that Luke was training an new legion of Jedi and were preparing for lightsabers to once again be part of the battlefield landscape. Either that or the knights of Ren simply decided that martial training builds good discipline and if you are going to give your troopers melee weapons you may as well make them electro-weapons for extra deadliness. Being able to block a lightsaber may just be an added bonus.

So exciting! I cannot WAIT to see this movie. I lost it when I saw that stormtrooper wielding a melee weapon. To me this confirms that finn was pre-trained in sword/saber combat rather than him being a force sensative (although its possible hes that too, but I think they Rey will be the only new jedi in this movie)

Yeah, that trooper was pretty badass for a peon. Though I think Finn’s strong in the Force, personally.

I thought so too (That Finn just knows how to use a melee weapon and not force sensitive) but the earliest rumors we’ve heard, that have been proven to be true, were that Finn actually deflects blaster shots with the saber in this movie and I believe for that, he has to be force sensitive IMO. We’ll find out soon enough. I hope we get more than one force sensitive character. They have plans for 10-12 aswell. I’d like for them to form the new Jedi Order for/into the next trilogy atleast rather than going 6 new movies with the same “Only one Jedi” story. Meh aslong as the story is good I guess.

You know … I think the only reason they put that trooper in this spot is because there was a rather strong reaction to the quick glimpse we saw in the previous teaser.

    Just had an epiphany.

What IF the reason why Finn is so freaked out and startled at the slaughter on Jakku, is because he is present (or involved in the killing of) Max Von Sydow’s character, who is a Force user.

So when MVS’s charcter is slain, Finn (who we discover is Force sensitive), Finn feels/hears a “great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out in terror”.

    Thus his startled reaction?

Interesting idea. If you’d never heard of the force, that kind of experience would probably make you feel half insane. It would be interesting to explore the idea of a force-sensitive character discovering their sensitivity and feeling a bit insane as a result, though this has been done in superhero narratives a bunch of times…

Yeah, I can see them doing it in Star wars too.

Like Spidey’s getting used to his Spider Senses or Dracula’s getting used to his Vampirism.

Because he said “hell no” which is a contemporary reference developed by black communities or black entertainers. I think its low and stupid for the writers to have Finn use the same catch phrase in a story that is supposed to be in a galaxy far far away. In other words its like the writers were saying well he is black so obviously he must say “hell no” at critical moment in the story. Which makes it stereotypical and racist.

Where’s your proof? You’re the one claiming to know the origin of the phrase. I thought it was popularized as a protest chant during the Vietnam War…”Hell no, we won’t go!” And was really just a crude variant of “heavens no”.

The point is there is no proof, it is not a solid factual issue. However the catch phrase has been recently popularized by black culture. Like I said just seems stupid to use a modern references like a catch phrase in star wars? I always thought of star wars like an old legend out side of our time in space so why would you use a catch phrase from our current history. If future generations watch this movie they may recognize the cringe factor when they hear Finn say “hell no.” It may not be something we can appreciate at the moment.

I think this is one of the reasons why stories like LOTR and star wars continue to live on and be intriguing. They are stories that span generations and don’t have any huge particular story elements that tie them to the time in which they were created. Imagine if EP4 used popular music of the seventies it would be very hard to watch today. Since the music is orchestral and original it works perfectly. I just hope we don’t see any more contemporary references in the star wars stories to come. We like star wars because its own awesome universe lets not bring fads into our star wars universe. Lets keep it authentic as much as we can.

No I must have missed the day in school where they dedicated whole lecture to the catch phrase “hell no.” What matters is I am not the only one who sees the direct coloration here. Also is the movie going to pause for minute and post a disclaimer when he says “hell no” regarding the history of the catch phrase. The issue is most people will associate that catch phrase with black people and will remind the audience they are watching a movie with sets and actors created here on earth where catch phrase came from instead of letting their disbelief be suspended. I think that is a disservice to the story trying to be told.

I think it is disservice in all the other star wars movies when they make contemporary references not just in this particular case.

I just think it is something that will take you out of the story and into our modern world. Why would there be catch phrases from our world in star wars? Just because Han said something from our modern world back in EP5 why do they have to continue the trend. I guess you did not mind C3PO saying “this is such a drag” in episode 2 either?

I don’t see “Hell no” as a catchphrase anymore than Leia saying “Shut up.” You need to re-watch the old films. They speak English, English words are made up out of Earth historical events.

The concept of hell is something most world religions have come up with all indivually on their own. I can imagine if there’s alien species out there who remotely are into any supernatural thoughts then it might crop up there too. Come on man you’re seriously looking far too in to it. Following your line of thought we might as well be reading subtitles while they all speak a bunch of completely non earth related alien languages when we watch these movies! Stop taking everything so seriously!

Exactly. If there is one other obvious SW character that would ever say “hell no,” it’s the guy Finn says this to – Han Solo. That whole bit was pretty cool, I thought – –

I guess I could look at as Finn being the crafty hero that he is would invent the catch phrase right there by himself. I still think it will hard for me when I sit down on 12/18/ to not be pulled out of the movie and into reality. In otherwords my disbelief will not be suspended at that point because I will know that some where a writer thought it would be a good idea to use a catch phrase. It was something that happened to me the first time I heard C3P0 in episode 2 say “this is such a drag”

I really dont know why is this bothering you so much. Ep III had the same thing so its canon I guess. And imo its better to have electrostaff than having lightsabers pulled out every milisecond. And if you think about how all stormtroopers were supposed to have lightsabers back in 77′ it isnt rly a suprising thing…

That’s the point, NEITHER should be pulled out every millisecond. Literally the only reason to have an electrostaff is to shoe-horn in more fight-scenes, leaving less time for actually character-story. There is nothing to like about any of it.

It surprises me because back at the Clone Wars there were 10 thousand Jedi around to fight with the electrostaff. Now there is only one Jedi, he is hiding, and the troopers could easily kill him with blasters, as was killed the majority of the entire Jedi population 🙂

I would like to point out that not a single electrostaff is used against a lightsaber until Ep. III. Not one. Literally we’re talking about General Greivous’ goons and the video-games, and the electrostaffs were LAME in all these instances. None of the other 5 SW films needed the electrostaffs, and neither should TFA. I think, as a SW fan, that my hatred for the Electro-staff is justified.
I’m not against new things, but I AM against anything that turns a random stormtrooper into a Sith-level adversary.
It’s a Jedi with a lifetimes training and the force, and an ancient weapon, but nevermind that, this dude-with-no-nametag has an electrostaff bitches! that Jedi will have to spend 30 minutes fighting some punk that ISN’T a force-user.
What does that make the Jedi?
Before, the Jedi were on another league, another plane of existence,

NOW – the Jedi are just Enemy Lvl 30 and can be held off by a squad of Lvl 20 Magnaguards if you have the “Cloud of the Dark Side” Perk.
This should piss everyone off. I know I’m pissed. And not just drunk, I mean the AMERICAN-pissed, as in “upset”

Does the fact that you know the name of that prop reveal anything?
You know that name because of the robots surrounding Grievous, don’t you? He had at least 2 good reason for having 2 electrostaffs… Firstly he was a successfull Jedi hunter… But his having electrostaffs was also justified by all the Jedi that wanted to kill him, for being the general of a separatist army against the Jedi protected republic, in a galaxy where maybe 20000 Jedi lived in.

Now the galaxy has vitually no jedi, and the second a guy gets a long lost lightsaber out, he encounters another guy who just happen to have an electrostaff in his pocket? C’mon man it has to be justified there’s no way around it.
I mean, it would be better that we learned the troopers or the first order has at least one good reason to be ready for lightsaber users.

        • November 19, 2015 at 4:22 pm

I don’t know man. A single Jedi was the key man in bringing the old Empire down.

Since the 1st Order basically arose from whatever was left of the Old Empire, I would find it perfectly logical for them to be somewhat prepared in case more Jedi popped up. Seems legit.

That being said though, we still don’t know what the full picture is in the context of the state of things in the galaxy during the TFA era. Maybe Luke did create a new Jedi academy before going missing. Or, as a completely wild guess, the Resistance might now be training its best soldiers into using lightsabers.

That’s all very much unknown, and probably something we won’t know more about until we see the actual movie, so I’d rather wait for TFA to be out before making assumptions.

I think you are forgetting that electrostaffs, vibroblades, and normal staffs (just like Rey’s) have always been a part of the canon. It’s justified to teach soldiers in the military nowadays to fight with knives, but why should we do that if they have guns? Close combat. Why teach a trooper to use a melee weapon? Because sometimes a blaster doesn’t always fit the scenario.

Also, the trooper is an elite trooper under the order of Phasma, most military officials are trained in more exotic weapons. Why are ceremonial swords still a thing? Because being trained in an exotic weapon is considered more elegant, giving the holder of the prestigious position more authority or credibility.

I don’t see anything wrong with the trooper being able to use a weapon that has been in the canon for a long time. I also don’t want to see dumb troopers like in the originals or even worse, the prequels (roger roger). I want to see heavily trained officials who scare the crap out of me, showing the strength of the first order.

The fact that JJ is adding in ‘new’ weapons (crossguard saber) and people complaining about it reveals how little some people know about the true canon (not the eu). Crossguard saber is an ancient weapon, electrostaff is a melee weapon used by a wide variety of possible enemies.

Don’t expect the originals, Expect this to be better than the prequels.

I hear you man, and you definitely make some valid points here, and I agree with them all.
Still it does not invadidates what I was saying. They could have the staff somewhere in case it happens, and they could be trained for that sort of situations, STILL, I feel that justifying it with a good reason would make me feel less that “hey you got a lightsaber, here’s a good duel for you” vibe.
I’m all for the stormtroopers to be bad asses, but not mind readers. So I’d enjoy JJ to state those ST are specially trained for Jedi encounters at some point.

          • November 19, 2015 at 7:05 pm
            Permalink

That’s like saying a soldier can be trained for a knife fight, but goes into battle without his/her knife because it is not as likely to have to use it as having to shoot a gun. The soldier isn’t going to leave his/her knife at camp, he/she is going to bring it along for the fight. You’d bet I’d have that knife on me. I wouldn’t want to get into a close combat fight and have to say “oh hey, I’ve been trained for this kinda stuff but I didn’t bring my weapon with me because I didn’t think it was going to happen, hold on real quick lemme go grab it, meet back here in 5 min?”

Many Madalorians carried around vibroblades, too, so why can’t troopers have electrostaffs even if they aren’t officials (though, most mandalorians were heavily trained in many styles of combat, but who is to say first order troopers haven’t been now either)?

          • November 19, 2015 at 7:30 pm
            Permalink

Well, that’s a possibility of course (it’s a movie). But what’s making me bug is that a lightsaber is supposed to be a very rare weapon. “Why would they be ready?” seems to me like a pretty valid question. If that group of stormtroopers is stated to kill, or have killed Jedi, then I’m all in for it.
But come on, to engage a Jedi with a staff that you usually just use to electrifiy people, without having a specific extensive training against a Force user… I mean, it’s a situation where you have to have faith in your abilities, and there are no Jedi that we know of in this universe, so it’s like impossible if you’re not prepared. So why would you be prepared?
Also your example is not very good, because you can always take a knife since it’s a small weapon. But this one? You have to choose between that shit and your blaster. You can go back to the ship to get your staff but come on…
This only makes me think about the fact that there might be a few Jedi in that galaxy. Maybe former apprentices of Luke? And that the Stormtroopers have started hunting them.

The storm trooper has an open hand, he could take a pistol, or sling a heavy blaster over his back and clip the electrostaff to his belt (it extends and when compacted it is smaller, kind of like a lightsaber, if you don’t agree google image search riot stormtrooper and see how small the weapon looks before extended).

As for “why would they be ready?” Well, we have absolutely know idea if Finn even is force sensitive (i like to hope he is) but if he isn’t then he would be just as effective with the lightsaber as the trooper would be with the electrostaff in a fight to the death scenario. Even if Finn is force sensitive, he isn’t trained, he literally JUST left the first order. Unless this movie does a fast forward 10 years kinda thing, he is almost useless with the blade and the stormtrooper squad would know that he isn’t proficient with the blade since he literally JUST left the order. Luke was pretty useless with his blade, too, in the firs two films.

And the troopers don’t have to be mentally/physically prepared for a fight with a Jedi, it’s called courage and it is something sought after when recruiting soldiers, especially ones that are part of a small task force led by Phasma.

Furthermore, not all soldiers are required to have the same weapon or abilities. A good army has to have soldiers with many abilities, I wouldn’t want soldiers who only knew how to fire a blaster. I’d want some that are scouts and can sneak and use snipers, I’d want some that are super strong and good with melee fighting, I’d want some that were strong tacticians calling in airstrikes back in the base, and I’d like some basic troopers.

Okay so here we go. This conversation is silly but let’s go for it.
Actually your point of view makes it easy to not care about why would they be prepared. They should be prepared if they are hunting Jedi allright. But if it is not stated, it bugs me a little they are prepared for something that just doesn’t happen, and that is pretty difficult to do. You say that courage is all that the trooper needs, but if you see someone with a light saber you’d better know if he’s Force sensitive or not otherwise you might get Force pushed into oblivion real fast and your courage with it. If they know who Finn is, that he’s got a lightsaber, or that he has no Force abilities, then the thing is settled, they have been preparing for this, and haven’t brought the very anti-lightsaber weapon by luck.
And even if you had a handful stormtrooper in your command, I don’t know if you’d spend budget on arming and training some of them against a weapon that is litteraly one in a trillion trilions without any justification. that weapon is supposed to so rare that they have to have a plan against Jedi. And as long as it is stated, I’m okay with it.

How is this conversation silly if you practically initiated it with your original, long comment to a one sentence comment? Silly in the sense that we are talking about something we know nothing about and everything is speculation? Maybe, but to think it is silly to have theories is ridiculous since literally every news piece on this site revolves around some sort of theory or generates new ones.

And who said they are training for fighting someone with a lightsaber??? They could be trained in melee combat for fighting someone with another staff, vibroblade, etc etc etc. The trooper having a riot electrostaff has literally NOTHING to do with Finn having a lightsaber. Finn left the order, to what we know he isn’t trained with a saber but is trained with melee weapons, we know you don’t have to be force sensitive to use a saber, we can safely assume the first order is searching for either him or the saber so they have intel on either or both of the targets, so why wouldn’t an electrostaff possibly be brought along for the fight just in case anything even did happen. But that is me trying to give the staff a purpose, when in reality I believe the trooper having a staff is simple protocol. They may be hunting jedi, they may not, either way troopers can be trained to fight against melee weapons and it just so happens an electrostaff can hold up against a saber. Just like a vibroblade, just like cortosis blades. The two weapons are not linked, Finn happens to have the saber, the trooper happens to be trained in melee combat. The trooper not running away and Finn actually fighting the trooper in the trailers is enough evidence for me that the first order knows Finn is no jedi yet.

…especially because the very reason could mean something: Maybe Luke’s aprentices have been hunted down by the Kylo Crew… hence giving them training for those situations! I don’t know, but there has to be a good reason. For a stormtrooper to come in and wield that staff right when Finn gets his saber out… I mean, what are the odds if they weren’t prepared for that?

Yea man I hear you, that is strange indeed…
I’m not saying it’s beyond repair for the movie, but in the end it has to be justified. Definitely. How can the First Order soldiers be ready(aware), trained and armed for Jedi, since there are no Jedi (except for the very last one, one in a terrafantagazillion…). Nobody uses a lightsaber except for Jedi, so why are they prepared for guys with that?… Why are they even aware?

But somehow, in regard for what we’ve seen so far, I have hope JJ hasn’t done that sort of choices so far without thinking it through, so maybe it feels strange not because it’s stupid, but because it raises questions… Maybe something is going on that we don’t know and that make this new aspect of the stormtroopers ligitimate. Maybe there’s a reason why they are EXPECTING lightsaber wielders…

Well… It looks like it’s an electrostaff, but what do we know?
Even if what you say is believable (it’s still just a movie…), when you’re a stormtrooper that does some riot control, and use that staff to electrify people who don’t do as they are told, and that you live in a universe with no Jedi, do you think you’d feel up for a Fight with a Force user that has a lightsaber, full steam? Would you even be sure your staff works against a weapon that you don’t know? that you have never seen?
If you have seen some lightsabers though, it should be said at one point, and that’s all I’m talking about here. For JJ to justify those kind of stuff. To legitimize it.

    1. Every tv spot and trailer has these zoom into the scene shots that J.J. and Michael Bay use the heck out of and I really hate them.

For those who do not know: Finn and the electro-staffed storm trooper are elite troopers under the command of Phasma. Special forces. JJ is going a little more realistic and less campy than the originals. It was decided that they had to change the tone of these films in that way. Capturing the tone of the originals was just too hard.

The prequels made no sense bouncing from serious to cartoon within the same scenes. The deleted scene of the murder of a Jedi and then Anakin and OBW giving each other comedy hand signals is a perfect example. Deleted or not, only an amateur writer director could even think that.

Boyega also mentioned in what I believe was the EW article about Finn and Rey that he was raised to fight as a stormtrooper in the First Order from a young age. He also mentioned that his character is very aware of who Luke Skywalker is, but has a negative twisted view of him and the Jedi in general given the negative propaganda force fed to him as a child from the First Order. It should be no surprise then that these warriors have been trained in hand to hand combat that may involve an encounter with someone armed with a lightsaber.

Also, in the recent Star Wars comic (#12), there is a character who is an imperial spy, also a stormtrooper with Vader’s Fist (the 501st), that has some skill with a lightsaber. It’s possible now, in the new canon, that there were even specialized troops in the OT era than were adept in this form of hand to hand combat and just never showed up on screen.

I don’t know though. Does he really need training to know how to use a lightsaber? I think anyone with much to no combat experience can probably figure out how to hold a lightsaber, and how to use it in a fight. I mean, I think the majority of star wars fans have not trained at any jedi temple but even without having seen the trilogy before we’re all pretty confident we could fight somewhat with a lightsaber.

well i understand the difference. I don’t think I could ever pull off any of the lightsaber fights in the PT. In the OT? Yeah I think I could do what Luke/Vader/Obi-Wan where doing. I don’t know if its been confirmed whether or not he’s been in action many times or in this film we witness the first time he’s sent out to do something and that’s what causes him to defect. But I’d assume with years of training (from the first order academy or whatever it is), you’d have a pretty good handle on what you’re doing. Or at least be able to block your foes blows.
But anyting goes honestly so we don’t know. If he’s going off of warrior instinct I’d love it. If he’s been trained already to use a sabre or sabre like weapon I’d love it. Either way this movie is going to deliver something great and can’t wait to be hopping on the forums and nergasming with everyone else once we’ve seen it in TWENTY NINE DAYS.

Both, but Finn/Boyega was better promoted through this whole process and part of it I believe has to do with Ridley being a newcomer, shy and stiff when it comes to media and Boyega is able to handle the promotion much better. I’m guessing Ridley is getting a feel for it now and they’ll unleash her during the promotion for Episode 8 after shes established as THE hero by the end of this film.

I think this trilogy is the story of Rey and Finn. Rey might be the Skywalker but they will both be of importance. Finn is being primed to be a fan favorite and his story is the most interesting so far IMO. Great actor. My hope is that Rey and Finn become a Jedi couple and rebuild the Jedi Order, sorta fulfilling Lukes wish or mission as he always intended, by the end of this trilogy.

I agree. Seeing the Jedi in their prime in the PT deflecting hundreds of blaster bolts with impressive flourishes of their lightsabers was great…but not very intense. There was never any (pardon the expression) butt-clenching moments of action violence apart from some of the duels. This is a great idea IMO because it provides that intensity without having to overdo it with lightsaber on lightsaber duels. Hand to hand combat will always feel more intense on screen than a shoot em up from a distance battle (which will no doubt be in plenty in this film as well). In short, I love this scene and can’t wait to see it play out on screen.

Besides the totally stupid heroical pose of the stormtrooper – what purpose have the electro-tonfa (beause it´s not a staff)? Against what weapons is this weapon meant to be used? Lightsaber? There are no lightsaber in the universe – no Jedi, no Sith, and certainly armies or ordinary peasants doesn´t have nothing like that. But let´s assume it´s against lightsaber, because who knows, when an enemy with a lightsaber pops up, right? (I wonder why the stormtroopers don´t have parachutes – you never know, right?). Imagine a duel of a stick with last 20 or 30 cm made to deflect a lightsaber. What happens, when the lightsaber user cuts just a little bit lower? This is not Jedi reflexes what we are talking here, with the stormtroopers. Nor they are machines with accelerated speed….so to me this is the first moment I dislike in the new movie…there´s no logic in it….

In the Star Wars universe, people probably don’t think of lightsabers as that big of a deal, most regarding them as a “weak” and antique form of weaponry. In our world, it might be akin to a heavily armed marine up against a religious soldier using an ancient sword.

If they’ve been raised since birth to think of Luke as basically the anti-christ aka their greatest enemy, then it makes perfect sense that they would be developing ways to stop a lightsaber blade, which would be the signature weapon of said enemy.

You mean this? 🙂 Luke is gone for years. And if by accident one or two stormtroopers meet Luke, let´s train them all with electro tonfa, and they will kill him this way. Whaaaaaaat? 🙂 Sounds stupid, yes? Yes. Why not just shoot him? Better go in bigger groups, you soldier guys, and with a good blaster at your side, you can just shoot the Jedi, if you are lucky enough to find him. Ki-Adi-Mundi would tell you….not only him. Thousands of Jedi knights and jedi Master would tell you that to shoot a Jedi is not big deal, just please be a bigger group….and that my good friend was at the time of 10.000 Jedi! The troopers didn´t need special weapons to kill them. Now there is only one and no one saw him many years…..but according to you it is only logical to train the soldiers just to be sure, right? 🙂

Your point is well seen… when I first saw the “riot trooper” pull out his extending night stick I thought “oh no, he can’t be serious…” it does explain why Finn has a degree of confidence with a “club” though. But back to your point, there is no way that weapon is designed to defend against (let alone defeat) a Jedi Master using a lightsaber. And that’s assuming Luke still has a need for a lightsaber…

They may believe that he’s training an army of evil Jedi in secret. We don’t know. Kind of like the reverse of what happened before. But it makes complete sense that the troopers, who are taught since birth that Luke is evil and Vader is a martyr, would have some type of defense against potential lightsaber attacks. Especially when they have a commander that carries one. Besides, it’s technically riot gear. Not “lightsaber protection gear.” Just because it CAN defend against a lightsaber doesn’t mean that that is it’s sole purpose or even it’s intended purpose. It may just be a happy side effect.

Not with an electric cattle prod though, especially not one that is 50% exposed to being sliced in two… maybe that look on Finn’s face is astonishment at the stupidity of the trooper trying to defend himself against a lightsaber with a night stick…

seems perfectly logical that the electo-tonfa would exist for the same reason tonfas exist – to control riots…hence the “riot control stormtrooper” action figure. My guess is that Finn has no training with a lightsaber at this point in the film (which i suspect is the second act). so his skill would match the stormtrooper he’s facing, having both been trained by the first order from birth. even if finn is force sensitive, he may not know that at this point in the film, or if he does, he wouldn’t know how to use the force. perhaps. obviously i don’t actually know that, it’s speculation. but does this help answer your questions?

    • November 20, 2015 at 8:12 pm

Kylo Ren has a lightsaber or something pretty close to it. So, clearly, there are lightsabers in the universe.

And even if for morale, the First Order was created based on fear that the Jedi were evil – that would make sense to fool the masses.

And given that trooper did block Finn’s lightsaber, it looks like it was very useful, after all.

I hope we at least get to see something we’ve NEVER seen in any of the other films before – dismembered Stormtroopers. Granted it’s probably a PG film but they completely chickened out in the PT by only doing it with the lame ass Battle Droids. Plus it’s not like they haven’t cut up characters before. I’m not saying that there has to be any blood mist when Darth Maul was killed but they at least needs some lost arms and legs.

This confirms Finn will also be a Jedi with Rey. In no way will they have him using a lightsaber in combat for the first movie and then never have him picking one up again throughout the trilogy. Finn is like ready to jump to the path of a Jedi while Rey is hesitant. The Force Awakens in both during this film. They are the two leads. Not just Rey. This trilogy will follow the rebuilding of the Jedi and the different paths Rey and Finn take to become Jedi. Neither of them have Skywalker blood. The only person that will have Skywalker blood in this film is Kylo Ren.

He starts out as a stormtrooper, so he has sword training. That whole “Only force users can handle lightsabers” schtick was abandoned. Secondly, I’m less convinced that he will be a Jedi, I personally think it’s a diversion to take your eyes off of Rey in the trailers which is why they show him with the lightsaber so much. I personally think Kylo Ren is Luke’s son and not Leia and Han’s.

In the one line Boyega delivers at the start of this, he shows the depth of his acting talent. Looks like a good fit for the movie. Though Finn has Luke’s old saber, I don’t believe he is force sensitive. From all the videos and interviews released, I think he’s just a warrior fighting for what he believes is right.
There is more to Rey, in one of the clips she fights with her staff and looked to have convincingly won that fight. Then she looks pretty comfortable with a blaster in other clips. We know Finn was trained by the First Order..But where did she learn how to fight? She is also very emotional in most of the clips…she seems more Anakin than Luke.
