UPDATE! Star Wars Rebels – NYCC 2015 Panel. New Trailer Unveiled!

Star-Wars-Rebels-Season-2-Poster-720x1062

The new trailer for Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels is here!

UPDATE!

Based on the work of ComicBook.com and Star Wars Underworld, we now know some specifics about the NYCC panel that aren’t alluded to in the trailer.

  • Pablo Hidalgo, representative of the Lucasfilm Story Group, has reiterated that Season 2 will be 22 episodes long – meaning that that number was most likely not inclusive of “The Seige Of Lothal”. He mentioned that there will be substantially more antagonists in Season 2 than Season 1. Dave Filoni, Taylor Gray, Ashley Eckstein also walked onstage, and Sarah Michelle Gellar received a huge standing ovation when she arrived.
  • With Gellar’s arrival, the time to discuss Inquisitors was imminent. Filoni noted that all Inquisitors have the same uniforms and lightsabers as part of their pact with the Empire – and with the Grand Inquisitor from the previous season dead, the others are looking to claim the title by impressing Darth Vader himself. The Inquisitors do not particularly trust one another.
  • Gellar described her character, the Seventh Sister, as being one that enjoys playing mind games with her victims before she eliminates them completely. A clip shown at the event (shown below) further established this. In addition, Filoni implied that the Seventh Sister isn’t Barriss Offee after all, but explaining what happened to Barriss on the show would be something he’d like to do if they could make it work.

  • Meanwhile, Ahsoka is described as being a Jedi no more, but still a heroic figure all the same. She’s aware of where the Order failed, and how its failure led to a resurgence in the Dark Side. Eckstein noted that she changed her performance to suit Ahsoka’s more world-weary outlook – in addition to making sure she sounds older than she did on The Clone Wars. Ahsoka is technically not a part of the Ghost‘s crew.
  • Rex’s mere appearance proves to be a subject that divides Kanan and Ezra. Kanan distrusts Rex simply due to his status as a Clone – and the unpleasant memories of Order 66 that come with that – while Ezra believes in Rex. Rex is said to know some truth about the Empire and the fall of the Republic, but that he does not know of Darth Vader’s identity.
  • The continuing saga regarding Ezra’s parents are a focal point of Season 2. Ezra also sees Kanan as his go-to teacher.
  • Chopper is described as being a jerk through the whole series, but he does something that is unambiguously good in Season 2.
  • Characters from the films are included on a case-by-case basis – as long as their inclusion in the story is beneficial, they can be added.
  • A clip shows Ezra fighting three Stormtroopers with a lightsaber. When he sees two other figures approaching, Ezra stuns them, only to realize that it was just Rex and Kanan. Hilarity ensues.
  • A clip shows a fight scene between Zeb, Ezra, and Kanan, and the Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother. The Inquisitors have an upper hand… and then Ahsoka arrives.
  • The cast members don’t know about the biggest plot twists in Season 2 just yet.

Outside of Rebels, Filoni mentioned that there are limitless possibilities for future Star Wars cartoons in any era. For those of you who missed it, there’s also a new clip of “The Lost Commanders” out right now:

I like this show, but didn’t think it was chills-worthy. Ahsoka facing down the “Seventh Sister” at the end though…

Also really cool to see the interdictor cruiser make it into the canon. Wonder if they’ll keep the name or call it something else? Definitely looks and operates the same as in the EU though…

They call it Immobilizer, I think.. It has already shown up in some canon books, able to pull ships from hyperspace.

They were in Heir to the Jedi. And there were three different types in Tarkin (CC-2200, CC-7700 and the Immobilizer-418, all from the EU).

Interesting – I haven’t read Heir to the Jedi, and must have missed it in Tarkin. I recognize the CC-2200 and CC-7700 ship classes (I think?) from the old computer game Rebellion, though I think they were rebel ships in that game.

Were any of them referred to as interdictor cruisers, or was their ship class not named? At any rate, thanks for the heads up 🙂

The story group needs to go back and play Tie Fighter and X-Wing for PC. The Interdictor was there along with other cool ships like the Imperial Gunboat and the Tie Defender.

Yeah. In the new canon, it’s called the Immobilizer 418, and it’s way smaller.

Holy cow that looks like fun! Now I know why they haven’t released the full TFA trailer yet. No way they would do that before the premier of Rebels Season 2. They will wait a week or so after the first Rebels Episode then drop the TFA trailer. Star Wars will own October.

    Loving this show.

I like the white lightsabers, too! It reminds me of the Star Wars Legacy comic series. There were Sith and Jedi, but also “neutral” force users that served the government and they all used white lightsabers. It gives Ahsoka a good sense that she is neither Jedi nor Sith.

I guess you didn’t catch it, but the entire point of Star Wars is that the hierarchy of the evil empire is made up of one ethnic group holding all the power and the Rebellion is made up of a diverse set of people groups from a multitude of backgrounds trying to bring equality and freedom to the galaxy.

Did you know that the internet was invented by a multi-national group of scientists spread across the northern hemisphere? That sounds like something you wouldn’t be happy about, so why don’t you give up the internet and fade into what ever inbred backwater corner of close minded filth that you came from?

Star Wars is an allegory about how unity across political/ethnic/religious lines brings solutions, not an allegory about how we should reject people who are fleeing war in northern Africa and the Middle East because they have a different skin tone and religion than us.

Not all species in Star Wars have their own homeworlds. Naboo and Gungan. Mon Calamari and Quarren. Kaminoans and Clones. Tusken Raiders and Jawas. Yuzzum and Ewoks. These are all unique people groups who share the same homeworld. They have conflict but they find a way to coexist. Human beings all share the same species and same world. Your argument is flawed on a multitude of levels.

One thing I don’t like about United States politics and news media is how much they focus on Mexican immigrants and the “danger” they pose to the country. I was embarrassed and thought this xenophobia was limited to my nation.

I was amazed in 2013 when I visited Europe and the most common thing the news talked about was how they were peeing in their pants over how Moroccan and Turk immigrants scared them. Either this is an unsuccessful invasion that has been defeated for years or they are just scared of people who aren’t white, want to be their neighbor, and might not expect Christmas as a holiday.

            2) The genocide of the indigenous people of North and South America is horrific part of my country’s history. It was also unsuccessful. I have Cherokee heritage which is pronounced in a few genetic ways. I have explored and look forward to further exploring this part of my personal history.

            3) “America was very non-diverse before the Europeans came.” Nope. There were dozens of nations across North America in the 1400s that survived hudreds of years until Europeaon expansionism in the 1700s.

            4) Seriously, your Mum is going to be cross if she finds you at the computron at this hour.

I like the idea, but I dunno. Why wouldn’t they use the same voice actor? Ahsoka is already dealing with two key people from her past – Anakin/Vader and Rex. Would adding a third connection be a good idea for the story or would it dilute the emotional weight of reconnecting with her master and her captain?

        Rex is a positive connection.
        Vader is a build-up
Putting Barriss in between them will make or break Ahsoka. It adds another dimension to what she is up against. The arc can’t be straight to Vader, it’s too easy.

And like Frisk says, it brings closure.

I like that arc! Confronting Rex brings up her past, confronting Barriss teaches her to deal with the past, confronting Vader teachers her how to bury the past.

I’m not convinced, though, that Vader will be a big part of Season 2. He drove the main characters off of Lothal, I’m thinking he’s played out his role in Rebels. Otherwise, it diminishes him as a villain. He can’t kill a washed up Padawan turned smuggler and a Padawan with less than a year of training? I think he’ll go on to bigger and better things and leave the lowly Ghost Squadron to his underlings.

        Interesting
Is it possible the inquistors take the same type of arc that the sith do or the Knights of Renn where they take a title and their identity ceases to exist in it’s original form?

So from a technical perspective Barris like Anakin, ceased to exist..

I know it’s been (de)confirmed, however, I just want to say: Really? Don’t you remember that Barriss had that British accent that the Seventh Sister so clearly does not have?

You would need to a confrontation between Ahsoka and the Seventh Sister to get any decisive evidence. There are plausible ways to explain either side, with no end. It’s only how Ahsoka and the Seventh Sister react to one another in the fight would be the final judgement.

Why not?!? Can’t come up with any other correlation of the last name to the character herself. ???

Is it cookoo to think Disney’s being so super meta and the Knights of Ren are a weird Mandalorian/Sith mashup started by Sabine’s son Kylo? Probably….. But fun to think about. The villaim of the new trilogy is, horrors, Obi Wan’s grandson!

I think that’s a little far-fetched, but I’ll give you a gold star for originality. Starting to believe Kylo Ren is another Skywalker twin along with Ms. Rey, and Sabine may be our lead in Rogue One. Rebels is such a great show, but I can’t get out of my mind how were all blinded toward the eventual demise of all the characters in the series. 🙁

I get the feeling that Ahsoka knows that the Inquisitors have some training from Vader. I think that the Inquisitors also know that Ahsoka also has more meaningful training from Vader (then Anakin) and want to prove themselves by defeating Ahsoka.

    Most impressive.

Season 2 looks like it’s going to be awesome. 22 episodes too. It feels like they’re focusing on everything I love about Star Wars. B wings even get a dedicated introduction.

Ackbar helped design it in the old canon, So it would be cool to see if he make a cameo here and we could see what he’s done since The Clone Wars. The Mon Calmari they showed was too short and fat to be him. Lost Stars describes him as being really tall which I never really got from the films but we never really saw him from the waist down.

Actually, Rebels Season 2 is 22 episodes long, but Matt Martin confirmed Siege of Lothal counts as first two episodes of Season 2, so we have 20 episodes left this season to go.

I really don’t like how they got JEJ’s voice all wrong, Hard to explain but he doesn’t sound much like he did in the films which is irritating as this takes place right before A New Hope. Not just his performance which is more English sounding now but something about the breathing that’s very different here. They should have just asked Ben Burtt what he did since he seems cool enough to work pro-bono and is still among the living.

Check Youtube if you don’t have the films on you to see what I mean. I know he’s a lot older now but I think it has more to do with whoever is in charge of the sound mix.

I’m no Ben Burtt but I think they rushed this out which is why it’s so off. Either that or it was a budgetary thing since Rebels is made for less than Clone Wars.
