Winners! The Cantina Forums Birthday Party! Win 10 Awesome Star Wars Prizes!

The Cantina

It’s been exactly one year since I and Echo 07 started the Cantina message boards. I have to admit that at first I was hesitant about this. I thought message boards were a thing of the past, but now I am really happy that I was sooo wrong. Celebrating our first birthday, I decided to make a giveaway contest with 10 really cool Star Wars prizes. Also this is a good time to promote our new comment system…

The Cantina made me realize that reporting Star Wars news is cool, but it’s much more cooler to discuss, speculate and talk about these news with some nice people which opinion you value and respect. I think we managed to build a very strong community in just 365 days. We already have more than 3000 members, but I will take quality over quantity at any time.

I noticed many people linking our comment system on the blog with our forum community, which are two separate things. Many anonymous posters abused our comment system, posting insulting and racist comments. That’s why we decided to remove the anonymous option and install the Disqus comment system.

So with this post we will try to celebrate two things: our forum’s birthday and our new comment system. There will be 10 winners and you can see the prizes in the form below. The big prize is Poe Dameron’s LEGO X-Wing, then we have the full Rebels season 1 on Blu-ray as well as some fantastic Elite Die Cast figures including Captain Phasma. And what is a giveaway contest without some Star Wars T-Shirts. We also have a hardcover Aftermath copy, and several die cast ship models:
a Rafflecopter giveaway

You can be one of the winners if you complete at least one of the entries from the form above. As you see each entry has a different value. You will get most points by commenting in the new system, answering the question we asked. Also keep in mind that the Tweet entry can be done every day. Also all people who have account in The Cantina will get a bonus of 10 points (all Cantina members should use their Cantina name when they sign in the form above).

The more points you get, the bigger the chance for winning a prize. Still we will randomly select 2 winners no matter how many entries they have.

If you have any questions send me an e-mail at viralhide@gmail.bg.

Now join me in wishing The Cantina forum a very happy birthday! I want to thank the whole staff and 1030th members for the incredible help and support, and of course all our regular members for being part of this. This wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank You! 🙂

The Prizes:

LEGO X-Wing

Rebels

I’m a fan of J.J Abrams’s past work and so far I’m loving his take on the Star Wars universe. I think the first installment of the franchise is in good hands with him!

I love JJ Abrams new direction for the Star Wars universe. Honoring what worked so well with the original movies and yet injecting new mythology we can all enjoy. Also he is giving us the kick ass new heroine known as Rey. I am behind Darth JJ all the way!

I like the way that things look to be going so far. I more-or-less like all of his previous work, and from what we’ve seen Episode VII looks to similarly be a high-action and interestingly shot film, which makes me think it’s still Star Wars, but also very surely an Abrams film as well. Which is exactly what I want.

I think Kathleen Kennedy (President of Lucasfilm) couldn´t choose any more better. JJ Abrams is the best choice, he knows what the fans want, I have never seen a work of him but what I´m seeing from the teasers I´ve just gotta say: Congratulions!

Let me clear one thing first. I love the work that JJ has done so far even with Star Trek because I wasn’t a Star Trek fan until I saw JJ’s 2009 version. I know, some might say that he made more a Star Wars movie than a Trek movie but espacially this movie got me so excited on what will come next that I had to watch the whole ‘original’ Franchise (!)- all the Movies and TV-shows( except DS9 and Voyager) – and I felt connected to this optimistic view of how mankind can grow up as a species. This doesn’t have anything to do with JJ’s craft but yet it does: He made me want to watch the media that has come before – and I see this as a good thing. His talent to write a a good script also makes me very excited especially when he’s in colaboration with L.Kasdan.
My biggest fear ever was that the upcoming Star Wars sequel will be a simple dumb popcorn film with lightsabers but after watching those teasers, the 2 min. of behind the scenes and people who have talked about being on set and so on… makes me as a moviegoer and as an ultra passionate fan of Star Wars extremely excited on what is to come. We see that not only Mr. Abrams all of them went there and worked with their heart and really wanted to do this – it wasn’t just a movie making experience, it was/is a passion project. So ‘Do you approve J.J. Abrams direction for The Force Awakens’ look and feel?’. Fuck. Yes.

JJ’s commitment to practical effects (Yes, I mentioned them!) definitely seems reassuring, and most of the footage from the trailers seems to support the idea that these films with have a visual feel that is similar to that of the OT while still being a step forward in terms of quality. My only real concern on this front has been the shot of the First Order rally scene- this didn’t look as convincingly real as many of the other shots in my opinion, hopefully it will look better when it is part of the finished film. I have faith though!

I don’t know if there is enough removal from the original trilogy from a design standpoint. The look cinematographly speaking so far is gorgeous. I just don’t know if 30 years of war would only produce minor changes in warfare. And where are the a and b wings and something newer?

  • September 7, 2015 at 3:34 am
    Permalink

‘Practical Effects’ is just code for ‘I’m a real fan of the originals just like you.’ JJ is dedicated to bringing the original aesthetic and atmosphere of 4, 5 and 6. That eery, tangible, textural world that you can walk into. Without going into detail about the PT, I think that that alone, that fuckin’ awesome 80’s feel to a movie is going to make this super fun.

That and Kasdan and the actors involved combined with the strengths of CG and minimizing the drawbacks, this is the first chance in decades at not just creating ‘a Star Wars’ but a great film that is ‘a Star Wars’ film also.

    Nothing but enthusiasm here.

seeing the first trailer made me think that Abrams did something that apparently Lucas forgot: bring back the Falcon. If we got a slightly different story for episode I that included the Falcon, and saw that in the trailer, I think the PTs would have been liked better than as they are. Anyhow, I’ve seen all the previous Abrams movies, and there was a huge human side in them. Just remember Super 8, Into darkness – Star Trek or Mission Impossible III. Also, he has a great way of showing action sequences, so yeah, I’m confident in having him directing the force awakens. Expecially for the great way of using both practicals and CG without overwhelming any of both.

Definitely am very pleased with the direction Abrams is heading. It seems character based, it seems new, and it also seems like he’s still got one foot in the door of the OT. I love how they are shooting film and working with practical effects, as opposed to digital effects… There’s a certain texture and feel to the clips we’ve seen in the trailer; a certain warmth. I trust in the whole crew working on this film, and believe as fans they are passionate enough to do it justice.

One thing the prequels was missing (aside from the Episode 1 junk dealer) was the “lived in” and used feel of the original trilogy. It looks like he’s trying to re-capture that, and I’m all for it!

The reason the used feel isn’t present in the prequels is because they galaxy hasn’t reached that stage yet. The used look was very much meant to show the strain on society that was caused by the Empire.

There are always going to be worn in areas in the Sw universe, even on Coruscant. Civilization has been around for eons, everything didn’t simply start to wear out because the empire was in power. In the prequels , everything had a digital “video game feel” and it didn’t “feel” real or lived in to me at all.

Don’t take it up with me, take it up with Lucas. I’m just telling you what his intention was.

Oh, I’m not taking it up with you. But George really hasn’t been making sensible decisions for awhile now, bless his heart. 🙂 That doesn’t make that much sense to me. I get that the Empire’s oppression would hurt the galaxy. But for it to be super clean for eons and then get trashed in 25 years seems like an odd intention to me.

Especially if the Republic had already been failing for 20+ years at the beginning of Ep. I.

I contend the cleanliness of it all, along with introduction of massive cloning, droid armies and midichlorians pushed it into ‘sci-fi’ rather than space fantasy/opera, which in its best forms (Princess of Mars, Dune, Guardians of the Galaxy) must include a bit of Western – cowboy characters, outlaws, frontiers, smugglers, fast talking gamblers, etc.

The prequels were more science fiction than space fantasy, which I think made them a bit less enjoyable. IMO.

Happy with JJ and even happier with Lawrence Kasdan. It’s going to be great.

I’m incredibly optimistic about that the movie appears to feature the real and gritty aspect of the original trilogy. It’s going to be less sterile and more tactile, that plus the sounds of the original and a John Williams soundtrack and I think this movie is starting off on a great foot.

Star Wars’ return needs a director with an innovative course of recording and JJ Abrams IS the guy who fits the best. However, I believe he will change the look and feel of Star Wars though he will surely keep the movie the same as all the fans love it. Like, Mark Hamill said in the BTS video, “everything’s changed, but nothing’s changed”.

I wonder if JJ will use the traditional SW wipes. As long as he doesn’t go lens flair crazy.

Wholeheartedly approve of JJ’s direction with this movie. If he can’t get this right then nobody can. Whilst we’ve not seen much, I get serious chills when I see any footage, be it behind the scenes or teaser material. So pumped for this; I need my Star Wars fix ASAP!

I do agree with JJ’s apparent choices so far, but I also fear that it may be too modernized. I look at the clips we get of the first teaser trailer and I think of films like James Cameron’s Avatar, Prometheus, the Star Trek reboots, etcetera. Granted, you could say that about the prequels too, when those premiered, but that worries me even more because look at how THOSE turned out.

I’m not one to knock it before I give it a full solid chance, so I really don’t have a strong “yes or no” opinion yet. We’ll wait for December to come and go before I make up my mind.

JJ is probably as big of a fan, if not more of SW. I believe he has a true passion for the franchise and will make us fall in love with Star Wars all over again.
