Art Awakens – The Force Awakens Fan Art Contest!

Eli 01Back in August Lucasfilm and HP had launched a new Star Wars art contest called Art Awakens. Amateur artists can submit their Star Wars: The Force Awakens inspired art on ArtAwakens.com for a chance to be featured in an upcoming professional art exhibit later in the year.

From StarWars.com:

Five lucky winners of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Fan Art Contest, chosen by a judging committee that includes members from Disney, Lucasfilm and the legendary visual effects house Industrial Light & Magic, will have their art featured in the professional gallery exhibit. The winners will also have the opportunity to be flown out to Los Angeles to attend the VIP opening night, among other prizes from HP.

The contest runs for two months nationwide. You can find the full rules HERE.

We’ve included a few pieces of art from our friend and Cantina member Eli Hyder (@venamis) in this post, who is participating in the contest, and whose art was the only one so far shared on the official Star Wars Twitter page!!! Congrats Eli, we wish you the best of luck ahead in the contest.

I`ve been talking in the staff room over a coffee. Me and my colleagues in the art department have settled on the final grades for these pieces. And through much deliberation the exam board awarded the following:

    Top photo D
    Second down C
    3rd down C+
    4th down E
    5th down D <(1 teacher argued this was a C)

Me and my colleagues seem to agree that maybe in another year or so with a bit more experience they can get up to a solid B. Almost three C`s is quite good.

And you “teach” Art? That’s sad..

I’m not sure you can grade “art,” since it is a form of self expression. You can grade technique. But even so, I find that completely not in line with the spirit of this post. Furthermore, giving a letter grade doesn’t really provide insight as to what you find to be lacking in the images. Since you teach art, please provide us with a sample of your work (that is Star Wars related), and present it for evaluation by the patrons of this site.

“The art teacher” what is your criteria exactly – a several-weeks fine art project? This art is pretty close to professional considering it’s mostly done by hobbyists. They clearly have good understanding of form, line, color contrast, and concepting. Maybe a couple aren’t A material for a mid or upper level bachelors course, but given that few probably spent more than 30 hours on each piece, that’s certainly better than passing given the scope of the work.

If you are going to “grade” non-student artwork you should at least add some constructive criticism why you feel the peices were good/lacking

Show us your art! If you are a real art teacher you must be sooooo AWESOME! Oh wait, probably you are a teacher because you don’t have the talent to be a real artist !!!

You never know who`s looking around and visiting this site and scouting for talent. The artists could get follow ups, asking around for their contact details. Get it out there for the right eyes to see.

These are absolutely stunning. The artist has real talent. Particularly like the one with Rey and the group shot with the lightsabers.

Eli Hyder is by far the most talented Star Wars that i am aware of. I recently discovered him at Instagram. His Work becomes better and better with every Drawing. Especially the Last One of Rey. I’m blown away of that!

Keep it Up Eli and nothing stands in your way to win the Contest!!!

Bah! These things always come down to artist popularity contests more then art and expression.

As usual most of the best one’s are getting less then twenty votes.

If you cant get 20 people to vote for you, maybe its time to move out from under that rock.

You shouldn’t have to. That’s my point. The art should speak for it self. Like I really find it hard to believe that nearly six hundred people really think that portrait of Rey with the staff (which is good to be sure) is really leagues and leagues better then any of the other similar portraits of Rey and other characters there many of which are just as good and expressive but only getting 150 or so at most.

No, I guarantee you that artist is just simply more popular then all the others because he/she has put in years of time cultivating a community around him/her.

Again, it’s not about the art, but the artist popularity. Just saying, unless you have a tone of followers, don’t bother entering if you really want to win.
