SW7N Review: Marvel’s Kanan – The Last Padawan #1

KananThe first issue of Marvel’s new comic book series Kanan: The Last Padawan is out now. Check out our review after the jump.

Excerpt from the review:

After reading this issue, I think the Last Padawan series is going to make a fine edition to the new line of Star Wars comics. Canonically speaking, we have yet to see what happens to a Jedi or Padawan that ended up in hiding after Order 66 was issued. Hopefully, this series will cover that ground from someone we already know’s perspective.

Kanan #1
The issue opens in the cockpit of the Ghost, with the whole Rebels cast talking about where they are heading next. It’s cool to see a different artists interpretation of the Rebels characters. With all due respect to the animators at Disney, and to borrow a line from the great Bill Watterson, I much prefer ink and paint to pixels. The crew have a new mission to attend to, on a planet called Kaller.

In the last episode of Rebels, Kanan said his Master told him to run and he ran.

So I suppose he just ran during order66 and hid like a COWARD. Sort of like the French did in WW2 or when the French didn’t have the guts to fight with us in Iraq.

I think in the coming season, Kanan will tell Ezra about his cowardly actions but it’s ok because he made up for it against the Inquisitior

The defeat of France in 1940 was decisive and swift, but far from uncontested. An ill-advised (yet actually rather bold) deployment of allied forces by the French high command, a lack of coordination between the various Allied armies, an overly top heavy command structure, and dated armor and airpower doctrines put the French army in an un-winnable situation. French soldiers fought bravely at Stonne and Montherme, Gembloux and Hainaut, Dunkerque and Lille, the Somme and the Aisne, etc., yet this was for naught given the mistakes of their generals and politicians. Your seeming assertion that they ran and hid like cowards shows total (and perhaps willful?) ignorance of the events of 1940. What’s more, I do not see how it is connected to Star Wars.

Definitely the French fought bravely… I mean they did keep on fighting even though they were occupied.

One thing to bear in mind about post WW1 France, so many soldiers were killed… it took a huge toll on that generation, more so than any other country involved… so I could understand a fair amount of reluctance. Had America bordered Germany & was up against a blitzkrieg I don’t thing the results would have been much different. The only thing that kept the U.K. from a similar fate was the English Channel & FDR’s deal of “loaning” them military equipment.

To be fair WW2 is a huge influence on Star Wars but yeah, since Darth Muff driver seems to be taking Rebels this seriously & thinks Western involvement with the middle east is a good thing then I don’t think his opinion holds much value.

There is a large difference between a tactical retreat and cowardice. That being said Kanan’s actions are an important part of his character’s development. Fall from grace, unmasking, remasking, eventual redemption (often shown as an example of altruistic inclination towards an object suicide or the Buddhist/Samurai concept of dashi). Remember the show tells a story and this is part of the story. Also you might want to research the Operation Dynamo, Battle/Retreat of Dunkirk ect. The French get a bad rep, they effectively stalled the Nazi push and allowed time for the Limeys to withdraw in order to fight another day. (By falling on the sword.) Without the French the Nazi’s would have steam rolled on into GB and the war for Europe would have been lost. Also keep in mind many French soldiers who survived became partisan resistance fighters much like the Rebel Alliance in Star Wars. I’m far from a professor of history but it currently is my major.

@VIRALHIDE you once asked what you should do with the site namn after premiere of EP.7 . You should Already rename it to something like: “starwarsfilmnews” or starwarsmedianews” or starwarsALLnews or simply just: ” STARWARSNEWS.com” star wars is more alive than ever before, with more things on the horizon than all previous material put together. It is more than just EP7 . If They only reported ep7 news It would not be the alive community IT is today. It has grown far beyond just ep7 news. So rename the site and you won’ t have to answer that question anymore 😉 i kind of like starwarsnews.com . This could maybe be an interesting discussion fot the cantina and maybe even à name contest??

We have already chosen a new name for the site. To avoid confusions we will start using it after TFA hits theaters. 😉

Ah, ok, cool. I think It Was over à year Ago you asked people in the commentsection, so of course you guys hade been thinking about it 🙂 i prefer to have new news everyday, anything connected to star wars, even mundane or humourous things like : here in sweden, à fan got arrested after à sci-fi convention because he had loaded his Gunprops on top of his car and the police thought they were real. I have not seen any Guns on planet earth that looks like the ones in star wars 😀 & of course they let him go ..

Marvel can only hope to capture the Sith-lightning in a bottle that LEGACY blew open the Ossus Temple doors with… No small feat to make an idiot like Cade, a hero. Kudos to Jan D, Randy S, J-Osss & the rest of the Darkhorse SW-team. Good luck, Marvel, you have much work to do to match the excellence of DHC. ~Sx3

As to the “Kanan’s a coward” issue, first off, to run away out of pure self-preservation is cowardice.
However, it appears to me that he was ASKED to run away, thus Kanan is entitled, nay, EXPECTED to obey the sacrificed’s command.

Think about, if I was stuck under a crashed plane, and yelled to a nearby kid “run! the plane is about to explode and kill you!”, do you think I want the kid to go off and live a full life because I gave him a heads-up that he needs to run? Or do you think the kid should stick around and mope about how my death isn’t “their fault” meanwhile I’m still dying and the kid’s about to die too because he won’t be intelligent.

Running from the get-go is cowardly, running when the situation is out-of-hand and you can do nothing about it and are DIRECTLY ASKED to run away while another person sacrifices their life to ensure your safety is NOT COWARDICE – it’s basic human decency / intelligence.
If his Master asked him to run, damn right he ran! Because his master was sacrificing themself to ensure KANAN’S safety, and so Kanan survived, and has a cool platonic relationship with an alien lady, a sweet stormtrooper-shooting gig, and a mopey Padawan Apprentice / heir to show for it. Yeah, run? Good call.
