SW7N Review: Marvel’s Darth Vader #3
Issue three of Marvel’s comic book series Darth Vader is out now. Check out our review after the jump.
Excerpt from the review:
Well, now we at least have some idea of what the hell Darth Vader is up to.
But first, let’s talk about our new friend Doctor Aphra. Yes, she is the covergirl on the front of this issue, unless you purchased a variant. You might also notice a couple of droids that bear resemblance to a couple other droids we know.
Make no mistake, these are nothing like the droids you are thinking of. As far as our introduction to Doctor Aphra, we meet her in the opening pages of this issue, in the midst of a Mission: Impossible-esque break in. Dodging laser beams, crawling past security sensors, and running from explosions. We are not really sure what exactly she is trying to get until she gets to the prize.

LOL looks like Rey in that picture?
I know this is a comic book, but if Disney is trying to emphasize strong female lead roles, why make them so unnecessarily sensual?
Strong male leads are usually exceptionally muscular or hyper-masculine. Who says it’s wrong or unnecessary? Why not emphasize the heroine’s femininity? She looks awesome!
I’m just saying she has a look on her face that’s more like a playboy than a heroine.
She’s smitten by Vader
You’re looking WAY into things here. Also, lighten up a little bit. I’m slightly convinced there is a new puritanical view of women here. A woman CAN be strong and sensual at the same time. Let women be feminine. It doesn’t take strength away from them. It really doesn’t.
What male leads? Isn’t the whole world being taken over by women? At least I think so. I’m a Tea Party Republican.
Give in to the hate. You can’t imagine the power…
At least she’s fully clothed rather than glorified in a sex slave outfit.
Such as a certain a ruthless, scum of a gang lord dressing up a captive princess and showing her off as his trophy?
What would you expect a powerful worm like Jabba to do with her?
Yeah, I hope you weren’t referring to Leia’s gold bikini, because clearly that was more shameful than glorifying.
I was referring to our culture’s reception of Leia’s iconic sex slave outfit. It’s seen as something desirable for women to wear when it’s associated with shame and degradation within the context of ROTJ.
Of course a vile person like Jabba was going to force her to wear it.
Ano @23: 42 “more shameful than glorifying?” Then why do so many Star Wars fans insist on portraying Leia in that manner, with costume contests, toys, the whole sha-bang?
Do fans want to “shame” Leia, and women in general? No, fans think it’s sexy.
It does look like the artist wanted to do the obligatory impractical/revealing outfit, but wasn’t allowed, so he had to find another way to make her “hawt.”
Please don’t be into spray painting… please don’t be into spray painting… please don’t be into spray painting…
LOL she does kind of look like Sabine. But I don’t think it’s her. She would never be into someone like Vader.
Compared to the earlier ones, this issue was disappointing. Oh well.
Haven’t read #3 yet, but I feel these series take too much elements from the films in a lazy way, like picking up the same Jabba’s palace shots from Return of the Jedi simply replacing Luke by Vader, or these two droids (a protocol and an astromech doesn’t necessary hang out together).
Actually, the original idea was that astromechs would have a translator droid counterpart since nobody could understand what the astromechs were saying. Kinda tough to work on a hyperdrive whilst having a one-way conversation with the droid you’re using.
Cool. She looks like this Colombian girl I know.
Looks like what Han Solo would look like if he/she was Hanna Solo
Nah.
A female Han Solo would look more like Amelia Earhart, and not so much like a 19 year old Penthouse Pet striking a pose at a cosplay convention.
The prudes have shown up. Well done.
What’s prudish about that?
A sensual pose that is mocked because women apparently can’t be feminine and at that same time strong. Which is of course a fallacy. The poster tried to put the character in as a playmate as that is supposedly “shameful.” Hence prudish. Enough of that crap.
LOVED this story. Aphra kind of seems like she’s a little off-her-rocker, but i don’t think she’s in love with Vader or anything. She’s just very wild and very anxious, and now she’s found a purpose. This continues to be my favorite new Star Wars series. Very interested in the way Vader interacts with all of his new underworldly lackies.
Yeah it was good except the very obvious attempt to replicate Indiana Jones by modernizing him and turning him into a she, and putting her in the Star Wars universe. The first couple of pages played out exactly like the First Indiana Jones with even nearly the same dialogue. I don’t mind when people try to replicate and take ideas and then put their own twist on them but to use the same dialogue bugs me. It also happened in Red Harvest, Joe Schreiber pretty much took the famous Taken quote of “I will find you, and I will Kill you” and put that into his novel. It just errrrggggggh bugs me lol
http://cdn.unleashthefanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Darth-Vader-3-variant.jpg?4dbf7b The link is to an awesome variant cover of the scene where Aphra is hanging off the ledge and Vader is reaching out to her. Awesome “call-ahead” to ESB with Luke. It was $20 and I after reading the book I wish I had gotten it instead of the regular cover.
Does Marvel even proof read? If 3-Zeroes chip was under quarantine “for centuries”… how was it actively involved in Tarkin’s mess?
When did they take it out and put it back?
And how could they? Clearly, the Imperials weren’t supposed to have authority there as evidenced by Vader’s unwelcome arrival.
Did I miss something?
3-Zeroes claimed to be from the Tarkin Initiative so it would be impossible to quarantine that matrix for centuries because it wasn’t old enough. Lazy writing.
This serie is really doing his best to make darth vader look like a pussycat
He kills everybody, i don’t think it looks like a pussycat. However, reading you nick, i understand many things: Haters gonna hate.
