Shame. There’s nothing in the canon as it stands to suggest that Luke and Vader meet prior to ESB. This is cheap sensationalism. And the first issue was so good.
I suppose later pages could reveal this to be some kind of hallucination. But that would be rubbish too.

“There’s nothing in the canon as it stands to suggest that Luke and Vader meet prior to ESB.”

“You have learned much, young one.” That could be interpreted as them having met before.

Anyway, didn’t they meet in Splinter in the Mind’s Eye?

Splinter is no longer no canon.

I’m aware of that. Point being, they meet prior to ESB in the old canon, and this is no different.

Sigh… This is troubling I’m already disappointed. That’s not to say this can’t be turned around and spun in a good way story telling wise, but I was always under the impression that the first time they meet is on Cloud City. That’s the perfect first meeting with all that was on the line at the moment and time. This is just cheap as someone already said sensationalism. I’ll end my silly fanboyish rant and try to keep an open mind but this is a hard pill to swallow.

I suppose we are going to see exactly how Vader finds out Luke is his son.

    • January 29, 2015 at 10:18 pm
      Permalink

They already showed that in the Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader had no idea that Padme lived long enough to bear his children. Palpatine lets him know that “the son of Skywalker” lived.

Discovering how and when Palpatine figured this out is the real question to ask, I suppose.

Incorrect. From earlier in the film: “The Rebels are there. And I’m sure Skywalker is with them.” The opening crawl also makes clear that Vader is “obsessed” with finding Skywalker. Why obsessed? Because he already knew. The scene with the Emperor only makes sense when you remember that Vader and the Emperor were always trying to pull one over on each other. Lucas even reinforced the point in Episode III when Anakin talks about overthrowing him and ruling the galaxy with Padme. How did Vader find out? We’re never told. But Lucas often had significant events happen off screen.

In the old canon, Luke and Vader had multiple confrontations before ESB, so it will be the same thing as before.

“…it will be the same thing as before.”

That’s the problem. EU was cut out to focus the canon…or so I thought. Luke never encountered Vader prior to ESB. It’s implied in the movie during his training with Yoda. My opinion…this is a sign of things to come and I’m out.

“Luke never encountered Vader prior to ESB. It’s implied in the movie during his training with Yoda.”

        How so?

Paraphrasing…’you must finish your training before confronting Vader’…A Force ghost trying to talk him out of it…

If your looking for a direct quote:
Luke: I’ve never faced Vader before…

Fine it didn’t happen. But ESB clearly implies that THEY NEVER CONFRONTED EACH OTHER.

this comic waters down the canon…it does not fill in the gaps.

Just my opinion…to each their own…this ain’t mine.

But now you’re implying that Luke knew Kenobi lied BEFORE Luke’s (First ;> ) confrontation with Vader. Luke didn’t know until he got his hand cut off.

I’m simply venting my (admittedly) geeky frustration with the direction of the “new EU”. Again…I see it as a water down and not the gap filler it was told to be.

Yes i lost myself in explications. Umm…I don’t think it’s hard to believe that the whole damn galaxy knows who Vader is. The Empire isn’t some secretive faction…it’s the official government of this time period, and Luke and company would undoubtedly know who the two top dogs of this government are.

I would suggest to read Dark Lord from James Luceno, I know it’s not canon anymore. But he explains that only the Emperor knows Darth Vaders true identity. It makes sense, because Luke did not know until Vader tells him at Bespin.
I think someone in the Rebel Alliance in the know, would have taken Luke aside and would have told him about Vader’s lineage/origin, if they had the knowledge.
Anakin Skywalker died with the fall of the Republic.

Ok. So can u give an estimation on the training duration ? i mean, we can suppose Yoda and Luke had others discussions about Vader, besides we know on the movie. he warned Luke about his power and the probably Luke’s fail. This doesn’t exist to me. These comic books and side story books cheapen powerful moments from the only thing that is really canon to me which is the films.

This is exactly why I hated the EU. Even if this is in some way a “hallucination” or foreshadowing scene I think it just set the standard on what to look forward to. Adding to rather than filling in to the canon. Get ready for Luke to fight Palpatine again prior to RotJ…get ready for ANOTHER surviving Jedi…oh Rebels got that…get ready for secret apprentices for Darth Vader AND Sidious…and clone after clone after clone of evil characters…oh…don’t forget more in hiding Sith coming out to play too. I never liked the EU as canon and I’m sure I’ll hate this. Marvel/Disney won’t be getting my buck from this water down. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

I think having Vader meet Luke before Empire can work, If done right it can add a lot to when they finally know the truth. But if done wrong it just make Luke and Vader look like fools. If this is there first confrontation it kinda makes sense that Vader wouldn’t know who was the one who destroyed the death star, And Luke underestimating Vader’s power. Just hope these encounters have meaning and not just “Boss Fights”.

    • January 30, 2015 at 2:17 am

Yes it could work, but Luke said at Bespin in the beginning at the duel to Vader:
You’ll find I’m full of surprises.

For me this sounds like a first encounter not a second!

But I don’t mind artistic freedom, I think without some creative changes the comics would be dull and boring to read, it’s like good fan fiction. Take it for what it’s worth – Entertainment.

It could be a second encounter. Luke’s line follows Vader saying, “You have learned much, young one.” And by that point Luke had indeed learned a lot more.

i’m fine with how things are turned here. i mean Vader don’t even know who he is. in ESB Vader tells to Sidious they have a new enemy, the young rebel pilot who destroyed the Death Star. On Bespin Vader tells to Luke “You are not a Jedi yet.” Here this is : “You are not a jedi. You have no right” And : “You wield your weapon like unskilled child” I think this could happen right after the battle of Yavin. I’m glad they try to feel the holes between movies. But we need to see how things turn on the next pages though. Besides that they ve now the Story Team at LucasFilms and they re here for that matters

Does Vader think Luke is Obi-Wan’s son in this scene? Otherwise, Vader would be referring to himself as Luke’s father and thus he already would know it’s his son.

idk. maybe he tries to make a link between his old lightsaber, Kenobi and the young Luke. maybe he wonders himself how the hell his old sword could be in his hands ?

But Vader says “your master has fallen,” which sort of implies he doesn’t think Kenobi is Luke’s father.

Why would he think that? There’s nothing in the dialogue here that suggests Vader thinks Obi-Wan is Luke’s father. He acknowledges Obi-Wan gave Luke that lightsaber, yes. But that’s all. For all Vader knows, Luke is just some random dude who befriended the rebels and Kenobi.

I just read it again, and here’s a nifty little detail that stood out: Vader Force-pulls the laser sword from Luke’s hand, which confuses Luke (“How did you… “). Of course, he’s never seen or used that ability before–lifting objects by the Force wasn’t introduced until ESB. I wonder whether that time in the wampa cave will be the first time he tries that successfully.

Cool stuff. I have no problem with Vader and Luke meeting before ESB, just as long as Vader doesn’t know that Luke is his son. That little bit of info is supposed to be revealed to Vader by Palps in ESB –

Palps: “I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.”
    Vader: “How is that possible?”
Palps: “Search your feelings, Lord Vader.”

    • January 29, 2015 at 9:17 pm

You’re reading that scene wrong. Vader knows perfectly well who Luke is there–he’s been referring to him as Skywalker to his officers–but he’s feigning ignorance to Sidious. And Sidious won’t have it.

It’s a big Galaxy. Luke, Anakin, and Shmi couldn’t have been the only people in it to have had that last name.

OK, but that doesn’t change the fact that Vader’s trying to lie to the Emperor.

        • January 30, 2015 at 5:45 am
          Permalink

Doesn’t matter. Vader knows Obi-Wan trained Luke. He says so in multiple places in ESB, starting with the conversation with the Emperor. (“Obi-Wan can no longer help him.”) Having a boy just the right age, strong in the Force, and trained by your former master on your former home planet suddenly turn up and blow up your giant space station is a bit much to chalk up to coincidence once you learn the last name.

The dialogue change was just meant to line up with PT better. At the end of RotS, neither Vader nor the Emperor know the twins exist. The revision just establishes that the Emperor found out. I suppose it could’ve been left alone, though, and the discovery could’ve happened off screen. (It’s pretty well implied that Vader already knew anyway and is feigning ignorance, although he may be genuinely curious as to how it happened.)

Several points I have or agree with. Yes Vader isn’t drawn very good. Nor is he drawn with the same front of the helmet in ANH. These all have the widow’s peak point in front. He didn’t have that in ANH plus he just doesnt look all that good. Also as we see at the end of this sneak peak it looks as if Luke will be struck down dead by Vader. We know this is not true so maybe we should hold comments until we see the whole comic book issue.

But this comic seems to be dated right after the battle of Yavin or not so far. That explains why is wearing the outfit he wear at the end of ANH. It’s between Ep 4 and 5 to be more clear. so it make sense Luke has seen Vader in the cave. Like a terror hallucination to test his Jedi self-control. It can looks like a bit a stretch but i think nothing in the OT “affirms”Luke has never fought Vader before the ESB final confrontation.

    I know it’s off Topic.
I rewatched the OT, I noticed that Darth Vader does not know Yoda.
Never mentioned him in the OT, only mentioned Obi Wan as Lukes only Teacher.
Luke never tried to clear it up either.

The PT dropped the ball so many times.

    • January 30, 2015 at 4:59 am

That’s not a mistake. Luke was protecting Yoda by hiding his existence. Remember, he was still in exile and in danger from the Empire.

  • January 30, 2015 at 5:27 am

This scene actually could help make sense of some dialogue in ESB: “He is just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.” Prior to that, we know that Vader was “obsessed” with finding Luke (from the crawl) and that Vader even knows his name, but it isn’t clear yet HOW he knows that, nor how he knows Obi-Wan trained (or started training) Luke. This could explain how Vader learned everything, including Luke’s parentage. (He clearly knows by the beginning of ESB despite his feigned ignorance in the later conversation with the Emperor. He’s trying to pull one over on the Emperor because he still dreams of overthrowing him and ruling the galaxy himself, just like he said at the end of RotS. And he thinks Luke could help him do it.)

I think the issue looks promising. For those complaining that Luke should not confront Vader before ESB… what we see here is not so much a confrontation or a duel but more like Vader showing Luke just how much he doesn’t know about the force. He did this by taking his lightsaber like taking candy from a baby. Luke it’s no match for Vader and the rest of the series will probably make that clear.

Guys, guys… we’ve got to remember how gullible Anakin/Vader is. This guy let Palpatine stroll him over to the dark side. All that power and he’s an insta-puppet before he turns 21. Anger blinds judgment. Vader is still not the brightest crayon in the box (which is fine!), and given that this is a preview, I feel like there’s going to be more context to explain this.

In the absolute most hypothetical situation, Vader thinks Luke is some scrappy kid that Obi-Wan found with force-sensitivities, and it’s not far-fetched to believe that Obi-Wan gave the kid his (Anakin’s) old lightsaber. He already thinks Luke is a joke, so Luke being a terrible force-user with a hand-me-down lightsaber is plausible, if a little stupid of Vader to think.

Remember, when the Emperor confirms that Luke is Vader’s son – /that/ is when he believes it. I’ll just wait up for the comic to see what the whole story is.

Ah, and these comics are all canon, so strap in.

EDIT: One more thought – this could easily be Vader’s first suspicion, but let’s also remember the little nuances of his character in ESB and ROTJ.

In ESB, he brings up Luke immediately and pushes to bring him to the Dark Side. Sure, it’s because of his power, but as he shows in ROTJ, Luke is priority over his master. Vader is probably pushing for this so that Luke doesn’t become a Jedi target for the Emperor, because that guy is absolutely down to off Luke until Vader suggests otherwise. Vader’s obviously had suspicions, and he shows it right off the bat.

By the time ESB opens, Vader knows Luke’s name, that he was trained by Obi-Wan (“Obi-Wan can no longer help him”), and that Obi-Wan and Luke came from Tatooine (“Its markings match those of a ship that blasted its way out of Mos Eisley”). Vader may not be a Rhodes Scholar, but he’s not a moron. Same master/same planet/same last name/unusually strong in the Force = too many coincidences for Vader to ignore unless he’s colossally stupid. He knows Luke is his son right at the opening of ESB. When did he find out Luke’s identity? We never knew, and this story looks like it’s going to answer that. Vader is feigning ignorance when the Emperor tells him he’s discovered that Luke is Anakin’s son (although the line “How is that possible?” could also be expressing genuine curiosity as to how it occurred, the relationship is not news to Vader, and Palpatine is at best confirming what he already knew).

Vader’s reason for wanting to bring Luke to the Dark Side is probably two-fold: First and foremost, he still wants to overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy himself, just as he said to Padme at the end of RotS and just as he offers to do with Luke in ESB. His motivations remain consistent, and that’s why he hides his knowledge of Luke’s identity. The second reason is dubious at that point in the story, but it could be that the “good” in Vader still wants to preserve his son.

Seeing as how Luke is wearing his awards ceremony outfit, I hope they explain why Luke and Han never wear their medals!
