Rumor: Star Wars Episode 7’s Premise is Slightly Different than What We’ve Heard.

Hamill

By now, we’ve all heard the “Star Trek Wars III Episode VII: The Search For Spock Luke” song and dance being applied as the general plot of the movie (give or take using a mechanical hand as a plot device). However, a recent rumor from an inside source over at Jedi News implies that the story may be a little bit different than what previous sources have talked about. Potential (if minor) spoilers after the jump.

The following information comes from Jedi News’s Justin LaSata, based on an e-mail he recieved:

According to the email I received, the concept of “Luke is missing/needs to be found” in Episode VII is being approached somewhat from the wrong angle in other rumor reports. The source says the “find Luke” premise is based off the cast of young characters (Ridley, Boyega, others?) trying to deal with a problem they uncover that they feel they can overcome themselves, presumably something relating to the machinations of the Sith and/or Empire. They feel confident in their abilities to attack this challenge head-on and quickly realize they are severely out-matched and way out of their league. So they alter their plans and scramble to enlist the aid of Luke, who is unaware of the situation (and how rapidly it escalates to a problem that requires his immediate attention) at the time of his “searching” by the young cast.

The source wasn’t sure of Luke’s whereabouts at the start of the film or how long it takes for the young cast to “find” him. The source was also unable to ascertain if the above information was part of the original Michael Arndt script or from the revised Abrams/Kasdan script (though I would assume the former).

So as the rumors state, there is a search for Luke, but it’s not quite in the way that we expected it to play out. Jason Ward of Making Star Wars also had an interesting perspective on this, through his own report on the story:

The vast majority of the rumors we’ve heard that seem to have panned out so far interface with this just fine. It honestly explains a lot of things like the young heroes X-wing being on Tatooine. What we initially thought never really made much sense with the X-wing fighter being parked on Tatooine. I have always felt like too much happened in the first act of the film for it all to be a part of the same movie. It has hit a point where I think some of what we are hearing is actually backstory and not seen on screen. That said there are certain aspects I cannot divulge that certainly confirm that some of what we’ve been hearing appears to be legitimate.

Again, bear in mind that this is still a rumor. As LaSata wrote in the original post, “Just because this info was passed along to me exclusively via a source does not make it more or less plausible to me, nor should it to you.” If it’s not true for the version of the script that will be adapted for the big screen, then it’s at least an interesting look at what Arndt originally had planned for the movie. But, as Ward notes, some of this stuff that we’ve heard so far is legitimately what they have planned, so take this information with however many grains of salt you want at your own discretion.

I want to know more about Max von Sydows role. Seems like he’s only being shot in the studio.

I like that the characters try to deal with stuff first, that’s a nice little change from invincible heroes straight out of the stargate

Opening Shot..a severed Gungan hand floats through space…camera pans to reveal various dismembered Gungan body parts until we finally see JarJars head spinning aimlessly through the void , eyes wide in fear with the words ‘Poodoo’ frozen on his lips.

The body parts start to enter the atmosphere of a planet….it’s Naboo..as the dismembered limbs start to burn up we see his head suddenly burst into flames with the intensity of re-entry and the flesh being burned from JarJar’s face.

Cut to a shot from the planet surface as we track the trajectory of the charred & blackened skull falling from the sky.

It splashes into a Lake Paonga and starts to rapidly drift toward the Gungan city below..Jarjar made it home…almost..before Jarjar can complete his final journey and underwater creature swallows the skull whole…seconds later an even bigger creature swallows it.

Lasreblasts come from witin the dome of the Gungan underwater city and blast the creature to bits. The circle of life is complete. Welcome home Jarjar!

No, thanks. I count severed gungan heads as poop jokes. Just ignore that crap like they’ll ignore midi-chlorians.

Oh, cosmicdolphin’s scenario sounds like a winner to me! I quite imagine the audience trembling with pleasure, bursting into cries of uncontrollable joy, writhing in the sweet ecstacies of nerdgasm!

Why? Jar – Jar should live in peace. OFFSCREEN, far far far away and never be mentioned again (which showing his severed head qualify’s as mentioning). It’s not like luke cares what happened to JJ Binks anyways.

same story, but replace jar jar’s head with Boba Fett. That I’d like to see.

I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Boba Fett. A bit of relief, but I’m not quite as spiteful as that. Just leave him out of the sequels. There’s plenty of room for him in Rebels, where his presence makes some sense.

I hope they also stumble into a Jedi Academy with about a dozen students. Please don’t make it look like Luke’s been wasting his time.

It would be funny if they find Luke just chillin in a jacuzzi with a couple of Twi’ leks in toe !

I mean what’s the point of saving the Galaxy if your just gonna become a hermit on some cave planet ?

I still don’t buy these rumors and never liked the finding Luke idea before, but I would like this premise if it turned out to be true.

My idea was better- betrayal/ Sith infiltration at the Jedi academy, right under Luke’s nose. And then there’s the talking pie..

They have been shooting this movie for 5 months already with no end in sight.

I just hope I like Daisy and Boyega in the movie. So far I am not crazy about them.

If anything I am burnt out on EP7 and would like to find out what the spinoffs are for sure.

How can you be ‘not crazy’ about something you know absolutely nothing about? What you’re actually ‘not crazy’ about is the fact that the crew have admirably kept things under wraps and you’re annoyed that you don’t actually know what’s going to happen next December. Isn’t that something to rejoice?

“How can you be ‘not crazy’ about something you know absolutely nothing about?”

Pretty much the exact same way you can be expressing love and excitement for a movie you know absolutely nothing about. (This isn’t true as we actually do know enough by now to render some judgement either way.)

Wow Daisy and John have not even had a chance for you to properly judge them. They have shown nothing to make me think they are dislikable quite the opposite really. Their twitter and other videos show that both have a good personality and a lot of heart. Give them a chance. A little early to be pessimistic.

This syncs with what we have heard about the Arndt script, which was supposed to have emphasized the new cast.

Luke isn’t the main character then. There’ll probably be Episode 10, 11, 12..

Feels like as you say, old rumors from the original Arndt script mixed in with possible deliberate leaks by Abrams & Co. to throw everyone off. Either way you have a general idea for the movie, if not more than we did at the start of this year. Enough progress.

I think we can assume that this is pretty much the effect they are aiming for. Only that in his world, a “master samurai” does telekinesis and brandishes a laser sword.
