UPDATE! Harrison Ford To Return To Star Wars: Episode 7 Set Earlier Than Expected? He Broke his Left Leg.

star wars

Harrison Ford is reportedly going against the advice of his doctors, and is planning to return to the set of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ despite being told by medical professionals that he should be resting…

From Huffingtonpost (via JediNews):

The actor – who is reprising his role as Han Solo in the forthcoming seventh instalment of the epic sci-fi saga – was injured on the set of the film at Pinewood Studios, when he was crushed by a hydraulic door.

He was then taken to hospital where it was discovered he had a broken ankle, while it was claimed earlier this week that he may need to take as much as two months off from filming so he can fully recuperate.

However, it sounds like he might be planning to ignore this advice and return to filming sooner, with a source telling the Daily Express: “Clearly he won’t be able to do any physically demanding scenes and even walking will be a problem. But there are certain scenes that can be worked around Harrison’s injury.”

It was also previously claimed by Harrison’s son that camera trickery may mean that he’d be able to film certain scenes from the waist up while he recovers from his injuries.

All the rumors in the gossip site were exaggerated and there’s no truth to the reports that Ford also injured his pelvis and chest.

UPDATE!

From BBC:

Harrison Ford’s left leg was broken in the injury he suffered while shooting the new Star Wars film, the US actor’s publicist has confirmed.

It was previously believed the 71-year-old had broken an ankle in an incident involving a door at Pinewood Studios on 12 June.

“His surgery was successful and he will begin rehab shortly,” continued Ina Treciokas in a statement.

“He’s doing well and looks forward to returning to work.”

Hopefully this doesn’t make his injury any worse :/
This just shows that even at 71, Ford is still just as dedicated to his career as he was 40 years ago.

I think JJ’s a major part of the change to Michael Arndt’s script giving more time to the big 3, and which a source reportedly stated that Harrison would play a ‘gigantic’ part in SW7, is actually Han Solo going out with a bang.
I think they changed the script to give Ford the death scene he has wanted for Han and that might have been the reason for the dismissal of Ardnt.

If he is eager to get back on set, it would at the very least demonstrate dedication, and maybe even some enthuisiasm for the project, on Ford’s part. It has often been said that his acting in Return of the Jedi seemed bored and uinterested, as if his heart was not in it (and frankly the script gave Han little to do). It would be great if Han’s possibly-final appearance will be the work of an actor who once again likes his job.

Have you ever broken your ankle? At his age? I don’t think you report to work just because you want to get it all over with while you’re healing. I’ve broken my leg and it is not fun at all. The last thing I would want to do is rush getting back to work.

This is also Harrison Ford we’re talking about; the John Wayne of space fantasy. America’s ideal male figure. Of course he’s going to report back to work as soon as he feels he’s able.

I think Harrison Ford is a big football (soccer) fan and he forgot the World Cup is on but now he is going back to work because he is a Spain fan… No use sitting watching that anymore!

I’d love to see a scene with Han and Chewie both injured limping through a battle scene a la Tom Sizemore in “Saving Private Ryan,” holding onto each other for support, yet still blasting away with their guns. God, that would be the BALLS!

The fact that he is trying to come back early tells me he really seems to care about this movie and the Han Solo character now compared to years and years where he never wanted to talk about it.

I can see Calista Flockhart coming in the hospital and asking Harrison how he broke his ankle and him responding with that great Empire Strikes Back line when the Hyperspace doesn’t work, “It’s not my fault!”

Yeah just like his injuries didn’t bode well for the Indiana Jones films. Or like all the production issues didn’t bode well for A New Hope.

Seriously, do you wake up every morning this negative?

    • June 19, 2014 at 9:01 pm
      Permalink

I pad cary has a point… not negative, just realistic. This is looking really bad. Worse than anything Indy or New Hope faced, that’s for sure. The whole production could get shut down for 5 months if Harrison is the lead actor of this film the way we have heard he is.

  • June 19, 2014 at 5:16 pm

Look the reason why Ford has been so negative about Solo is because at the time when questioned he believed it was a role he wouldn’t return to and in comparison to Indy which he was more proud of, he was a smaller part of an ensemble piece. Ford never expected Lucas to let Ep7 ever happen but now it is a reality he has warmed to the idea and also has negotiated a larger role.
I think Ep7 will have a good Solo part and his kids will be passed the baton but I can’t see him being killed off. Maybe another carbon freeze style taking him out of the picture. They still need all the surprises for Ep8 & Ep9 and how amazing would it be to see Han swing in at the end of Ep9 to save the day a la Ep4?

And just as a footnote I can see another Solo Space Pirate role being created and then this character being a bit of modern day version. I can’t stop thinking that this will be Boyega who will continue to try to charm Daisy but she just seems him in the friend zone until Isaac shows up as the romantic lead

Really want to see towards the end of episode VII, Han Solo/Chewbacca/The Millennium Falcon sacrifice themselves in a blaze of glory for the greater good. Would be a fitting end for the those 3 characters and would set the final trilogy up nicely for episode VIII.

It depends on what kind of break we’re talking about and where. I doubt he broke his femur or anything like that. Probably just a break slightly higher on the tibia or fibula than what would qualify as an ankle break.

A lot more moving parts in the ankle, though, so (again, depending on what kind of break it was) it could be somewhat less of a problem for it to heal than if it had actually been his ankle.

(Which could, I suppose, explain why he might be thinking he can go back to the set sooner than expected.)

Considering the possible death of Han Solo, here are some possible titles for the next 3 movies.

Episode VII: Wrath of the Falcon
Episode VIII: The Search For Han
      Episode IX: The Voyage Home.

Call me original why don’t ya.

Rolled my ankle badly in college. Thought it was a bad ankle sprain, but turned out I chipped the tip of the fibula right where it meets the ankle joint. recovery was barely different from an ankle sprain though.

Although HF reportedly had surgery and some sort of hardware installed, my guess is that it was some kind of leg break near the ankle joint like I had, resulting in the initial reports of broken ankle rather than leg.

      FWIW

Makes sense. And those early reports did claim he would be getting surgery for plates/whatever, which has apparently turned out to be true.

So, perhaps it was more the fall that hurt him than the door itself. The articles that used phrased it such that he was “crushed” by a door may (hopefully) be full of it.

I don’t know why people are so surprised he came back. George asked him to so why wouldn’t he? Without GL there is no Indiana Jones so he could hardly say no to bringing Han back.

It seems that whatever role he agreed to in the Arndt version was smaller in some way which doesn’t at all mean it wasn’t as impactful or wasn’t ending up in the same place as the script does now.

I don’t see this injury really impact to the final product. First off they can easily work around it with today’s digital technology (not that they couldn’t do it in the past either) so you won’t notice it plus anything that really requires more will simply have to be shot later in the year. It’s not like this is anything new either.

    • June 20, 2014 at 7:23 pm
      Permalink

Because George admitted that before he made the prequels he offered a Han Solo only sequel and Harrison turned it down. If he turned that down (more time/focus on his character…probably more money) and it was before the prequels (when things ran sour) it REALLY didn’t seem like he was going to come back to series at a much older age and after the prequels. It’s a miracle no doubt about it.

Maybe it’s time for the inevitable “break a leg!” jokes?

Ford has cunningly invoked the transcendent Break-A-Leg Blessing on the entire production. One for the team!

I think the fact he is feeling so good he wants to go back sooner speaks volumes about his professionalism.
