UPDATE! Daisy Ridley Confirms Conversations for Tomb Raider Reboot.

tomb_raider__daisy_ridleyDeadline is reporting that Daisy Ridley, who needs no introduction here, is one of the number of actresses being considered to play the heroine archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft in a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise from Warner Bros. and MGM.

March 10, 2016

According to Deadline, conversations have taken place, but as it’s still very early, there has not yet been any official negotiations or offers made. The rumor is that the upcoming reboot of the film will be heavily inspired by the 2013 reboot of the video game franchise of the same name, featuring a younger version of the character and detailing her origin.  Ridley is similar in appearance to the recently rebooted version of the character, who also happens to be English.

This might be a great opportunity for Ridley to branch out in her career. If her portrayal of Rey in Star Wars hasn’t already made her a household name, another franchise like this one might just do the trick.

What do you think?  Would Ridley be a good fit for the character, and would this be a good gig for her career? After all, branching out to play an archaeologist seemed to work for Harrison Ford. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

UPDATE!

March 21, 2016

During the Empire Awards, Daisy Ridley confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that indeed “there have been conversations” about her playing the iconic heroine, but she has not been offered the role yet.

“I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it’,” she said, adding that there wasn’t a script for the film yet.

Although currently filming the 8th episode of Star Wars, Ridley said she would have time to take the additional role given the opportunity. “Absolutely, I’m trying to fill up my calendar,” she said.

Ridley’s co-star John Boyega – winner of Empire’s best male newcomer award – admitted that he himself had eyed Ridley for the Lara Croft role.

“I played Tomb Raider the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version,” he told THR. “But I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”

I think Rey as a character is pretty similar to new-age Lara, now that this article mentions it. The determination, the charm, the way they struggle with and overcome their challenges, all tit-for-tat with eachother. I have no doubt that Daisy could absolutely pull it off.

    Two problems, though.

One, if this is Daisy’s next big role, she’s certainly going to be typecasted by it (if Rey didn’t do that enough already). She’ll be relegated to the tough heroine role for her entire career (if it even survives after this). I don’t want to see that.

Two, have you played the new Tomb Raider games? They’re called “cinematic” for a reason. Why the hell are they making a movie about a game that’s basically already a movie?

Camilla Luddington, the voice and motion capture actress for the rebooted games, would make the most sense as Lara. That said, Daisy Ridley is fantastic, so I would not have even a tiny problem with her being cast instead.

She already will have three Star Wars films under her belt, and I’m sure she will want to continue acting as her career. What better way than to add Lara Croft to her resume of characters she’s played. Even if the movie ends up not being good or successful, if she does her best, the movie’s failure won’t be because of her acting ability.

I’m glad Daisy is making a name for herself, but I really don’t want to see her in this role. There are very few action movies that allow for real acting (Star Wars being on of the exceptions), and I’d like to see her exercise her chops in a more dramatic flick. Besides, she doesn’t want to end up being a franchise-only actor; she should be set for money from Star Wars, so why commit to something like this? Thanks, but Daisy is Rey, not Lara.

Why wouldn’t she want to be a franchise only actor? Harison Ford is a mostly franchise actor, whats wrong with Daisey doing it too?

Harrison is not a mainly franchise actor, if that is it for you, you ve missed half of his filmography at least. The problem of being a franchise actor is that generally the brand of the movie is above anything else. Ridley has the power to become a great actress and provide deep performances. She deserves roles where she can develop her great skills, where character are the most important part of it. Fortunately Star Wars sequels took character-driven direction, but other franchises (most of them) don’t.

What I am saying is that he jump started his career with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Much like Daisey could launch her career with Star Wars and the female Indiana Jones in Lara Croft. It doesn’t mean she is stuck if she takes the role. It seems sort of off to say that she can’t or shouldn’t do it. You’re just assuming that Tomb Raider is going to suck, which is could but it doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t be able to provide a deep performance in it. She can do anything and there are way worse things to do than to follow in Harison Ford’s footsteps.

      • March 11, 2016 at 12:33 am

Ford was a franchise actor in the days before Big Franchises, or the pre-Harry Potter days. Nowadays, most actors can only commit to one or two franchises because of the time commitment for each (filming, press tours, staying “on-hand” for sequels). Those that do stick to the franchise game are very often easily forgotten, or they eventually transcend the genre and never look back. I’d rather see Daisy make her name in SW and refine her gift in smaller movies than be stuck being known as Rey AND Lara ad infinitum.

No, because it was an unnecessary misstep for Jackman. Ridley is even less established than Jackman was when he took that role. Ridley doesn’t need to take on a lacklustre franchise when she has STAR WARS under her belt.
She’s better off taking dramatic roles ( even smaller roles ) in other non-genre projects, and only picking up another genre project ( which she is fully capable of leading ) which has high credentials. For me, Tomb Raider is not that.

If they really make it like the reboot. I think she’d be great. This is assuming they do a really good job. Which is risky given the genre. Indian Jones made 2 great movies… countless others including the original creators have tried and failed at the Jone’s genre.

My first thought was not good, then I was thinking about Harrison and Indiana Jones. Ok, worked for him. As others have noted, it depends on the quality of the film. I’m cautiously optimistic. The past of video game movies is the caution. But the talent behind Warcraft is the best a video game movie has ever had (IMO) With the director Duncan Jones (Who did Moon and Source Code), he’s also one of the writers, meanwhile the other writer comes from Blizzard (The creators of the Warcraft games, if you didn’t know) themselves. Then the actors include Dominic Cooper, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebell, Ben Foster and Rob Kazinsky. Blizzard themselves are heavily involved with the production as well, and since they’ve spent forever making this movie I believe they want (and hopefully) have gotten it right.

Clany Brown is criminally underrated. I think the problem with the genre is that the source material now is even more dense than a novel or decades long comic that they get overwhelmed by which stories to tell. I’d love to see Jones direct a spinoff SW film as well too.

Jones would be great for a spinoff.

In regards to the material, it seems that they are sticking with the chronological timeline of Warcraft lore. This first film is when Orcs first meet Humans, and they have the First War.

I think he was supposed to write/direct one of the live-action SW episodes so his spec script probably exists somewhere in the archives. Lucas worked with Bowie on Labryinth too so I’m assuming he’s on good terms with Lucasfilm.

The potential problem will be what they have to leave out but Harry Potter/LOTOR/Narnia managed to sidestep all that so long as they have a good editor it should be fine.
