Benicio Del Toro is Confident he Will Get the Star Wars: Episode VIII Part
The 48-year-old Oscar winner, spoke with ET Online at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet, where he revealed that his involvement with Star Wars is probably going to happen. Read on for the full interview.
From ET Online:
“I can’t tell you much about it but I think that it might happen. It looks like it’s gonna happen so I’m very excited.”Â
“I can’t talk too much about it. The script is hard to get. They told me they’d cut my finger if I talk about it.”
“I saw the original one when it came out and it marked me,” Del Toro, who was 10 when the first Star Wars hit theaters, recounted. “I was impressed by the film and by the characters and by the story and the message.”
As you probably remember last month The Wrap first revealed that Del Toro is being sighted to play an antagonist in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII (HERE). Later Variety added that the studio is going after A-list talent for the role, also meeting Joaquin Phoenix for the part.

LOBOT!!!!!
yes! The Mexican Brad Pitt (although age has weathered both these performers)…
He’s not even mexican lol.
He is not Mexican. He is from Spain ( Europe ).
One thought. I wonder if Serkis in the role of Snoke, will be Palpatines son or something. I can easily imagine Serkis do the greedy face of Palpatine.
A Knight of Ren? Or a Sith? You can’t please everyone can you?
I’m still mixed on it. Sometimes I think he’s amazing and other times corny. I’m also not big on highly recognizable actors.
That said… it’s not like a deal breaker or anything. I don’t think he’ll ruin anything even if it’s a bad performance. I hope 😛
Recognizable like Sir Alec Guinness?
Sigh… I said I’m not big on it. Meaning that sometimes it works. Everyone knows Alec is most certainly the exception. EVERYONE. To the point at which I thought it goes without saying. Clearly I needed to say it. I’m disappointed.
i think del toro will transcend the fear of the recognizable actor. i know what youre saying, but i think he’ll be great. he’s definitely a presence, and marches to his own beat. used properly, he could be a really powerful character/villain.
itll be fine
Yeah that’s my hope. Like I said before he’s hit or miss with me. Sometimes I love him. He looks great in Sicario. I hope he channels that kind of menace… and less Guardians of the Galaxy. 😛
@Adavanter: Nice save. NOT
The problem you have is in thinking there is some sort of competition or a gotcha moment. I expressed I didn’t care for known/distinctive actors. Essh…
Which I still stand by… If it works. Great!
In what world is Del Toro a highly recognizable actor? He is not Tom Hanks lol.
YYEESS!!!
OOps. Im not first.
I love Del Toro. Thinking about it, he could do the wizened, older, good guy. Or he could do a mysterious, bad-ass bad guy equally well.
nice
One of Luke’s early trainees? If he was 10 in 77 that would make him 16 at the end of ROTJ. Maybe Luke’s first trainee? Sorry pure brainstorming. I do hope Plagueis returns just to prove Sith can be even more powerful than we thought.
Correct me if I’m wrong (usually am lol) but wasn’t there a rumor he was going to be Darth maul before Ray park but dropped out when Lucas cut all his lines out of the script except for like three lines. Thought I read that somewhere before. Still depending on the character he could be really cool addition to the Star Wars universe.
P.S. Recently rewatched The Usual Suspects and to me he steals nearly every scene he’s in so if we get that del-Toro we’re in good shape
Older, dark-side Ezra
Please no recognizable actors for these films!!!!! I don’t know if I trust Rian Johnson.
Yeah because that worked great for young and older Anakin in the PT
Ya… like it didn’t work for just about EVER OTHER CHARACTER in the original Star Wars Trilogy.
All they had were two older names. One a decently known name in film circles (at the time) and one known in a few cult circles. Everyone else in the trilogy was unknown.
Um, Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing were pretty recognizable back in the day.
I don’t see why Del Toro couldn’t have a Tarkin-like role in Ep. VIII. He’d make a great imperial (or First Order) bad guy.
Both Del Toro and Phoenix have a knack for disappearing into their roles, though.
All that I would think the whole time he would be on screen would be “give me the keys ya moths fuckin cocksucka”.
He’s a good actor, I would just be too distracted seeing him in a SW movie.
The adventures of Che Guevara in space.
I repeat I’d rather Mark Rylance as a baddie….lets petition 🙂
Rtf your right lol
Thrawn baby
This is amazing! Love that he just came right out and said yes.
Yea thrawn would be a good role for him.
Normally I am against casting such a A list actor in SW, but he is so good that he will bring about the gravity which the young actors lack. He will become formidable villain carrying to episode9.
My speculation is Kylo Ren,Adam Driver character, on the other hand, would be redeemed, like Ventress in Clone Wars.
Licence to kill
Darth Plagueis, the Wise:
Collector of Sith Apprentices & Knights of Ren

;o)
I’d rather they just focus on particular villains like they did in the OT. It was very much about Vader and the emperor, with a bunch of generals. We already have snoke and ren, not to mention phasma and hux. I hope they don’t just throw around and discard boring villain after another like in the prequels.
I’m guessing Hux doesn’t make it out of the movie alive. Snoke of course will have a greater presence in the sequals and Kylo and Phasma most likely will as well.
I hope its as an additional villain or someone alluded to in Episode 7. They are pushing Kylo Ren as the villain for Episode 7 and I don’t want it to be like Darth Maul. I’m hoping there is a villain that builds throughout this new trilogy.
G.Walton certainly dropped the ball on that one. Instead of Maul’s character development and an awesome pre-moff role for Christopher Lee, we got tired-CGI-ex-Jedi and a cartoon/comic for the Zabrak.
Epic Fail.
Imagine an old wise darth maul! Luke sensed him weak and barely alive on a nearby system!
Luke needs him for his insights into plagueis from his time under sideous.
No offense but that sounds awful
That would be a WIN for the PT and provide a lift to the Saga in my eyes.
No
Are Del Toro and Alec Baldwin morphing into the same person?
He must be making bank with this and the Marvel films.
The Star Wars universe is filled with powerful villains of all shapes and sizes including Sith Lords, bounty hunters, and gangsters. Lucasfilm may have gone Order 66 on the Star Wars Expanded Universe but here s why Clone Wars and Rebels are must-see shows in preparation for Episode 7.
