‘The Acolyte’: Leslye Headland Compares Carrie-Anne Moss’ Character to Trinity From ‘The Matrix’

Empire Magazine‘s coverage of The Acolyte continues with a new look at one of the series’ most anticipated characters. In the recent trailer, Carrie-Anne Moss was showcased in a fight with Amandla Stenberg’s Mae. Now, the inspiration behind Moss’ character has been revealed (or confirmed, depending on who you ask).

Speaking to Empire, showrunner Leslye Headland says that her Master Indara is “very much inspired” by Trinity, Moss’ iconic role from The Matrix franchise. Likening it to ‘Trinity with a lightsaber,’ she added:

“I personally wanted to see someone who had the highest status you could imagine in a Force-fu fight – somebody that would come in and you immediately would be like, ‘Oh, that’s the most powerful Jedi in the room.’ And that’s Trinity.”

Is Force-fu a brand new type of fighting style in a galaxy far, far away? Perhaps. If anything, it seems similar in a spiritual sense to Moss’ Matrix co-star, Keanu Reeves, and the “gun-fu” style established in the John Wick franchise. As was the case with Reeves, Moss was very involved in the day-to-day action. She explained what it was like training and preparing to take on the role of a Jedi Master.

“Within my soul and my spirit, to get to play this Jedi Master and train for the fight was [an] amazing experience… A part of me forgot how much I love action. I love it. It’s hard. But I was just really thrilled that I could do it, and I wanted to do it well. ‘Gimme another take! Gimme another take!’”

Moss also compared Headland’s vision for The Acolyte as similar to Christopher Nolan and the Wachowski’s respective visions for Memento and The Matrix. Whether that proves to be prophetic or not, we will have to wait and see. The Acolyte is less than two months away, with its two-episode premiere being set for June 4 at 6pm PT / 9pm ET / June 5 at 2am BST. The first two episodes will be available that day, with the rest coming out on a weekly basis thereafter.
