Review: ‘The High Republic Adventures’ Issue #3 Sets up the Pieces for Its Next Story Arc (No Spoilers)

Following its stunning second issue, The High Republic Adventures goes into issue #3 with a lot of momentum. Even though I felt that issue #2 was uneven in parts, the comic was propelled forward thanks to gorgeous art from Nick Brokenshire, Harvey Tolibao, and colorist Michael Atiyeh. The art department made it a blast to read, and the plot continued to surge forward with key characters reunited.

With The High Republic Adventures issue #3, it’s a similar situation. The beautiful art is the star of this issue. Meanwhile, the plot, writing, and overall story are in a tight spot as writer Daniel José Older sets up the next story arc, all while wrapping this current one. There is still a lot to enjoy in this issue. However, I wish the story was told in a more sharper, concisely woven manner.

The standout from issue #2, Nick Brokenshire, is back for issue #3. As surprising as this is, what’s even more surprising is how well Brokenshire and artist Harvey Tolibao can integrate their art, all on the same page. This issue will sometimes jump back and forth between the two artists, many times in between panels. Yet, in no way is it disorienting or distracting. It’s a marvelous collaboration that I hope continues going forward.

Story-wise, Lula Talisola continues to piece together her past. Lula has trouble remembering who she was as a Jedi. As she attempts to regain her memories, other characters return to help jog her memory.

This is where I feel the issue is a little messy. Issue #3 is somewhat of a transitional issue. There are a lot of characters introduced and reintroduced. Some of these characters are important for the next issue. But, by the end, it’s hard to keep track of everyone.

While I’m very excited about where the story is going, I feel that there are some “leftovers” that should be finished before moving on. Of course, Older could revisit these later on in the future, but at this point, I’m worried the plot could end up getting too convoluted, with many threads still left up in the air. Nonetheless, that’s a problem to worry about later, whereas currently, The High Republic Adventures remains a standout comic in the High Republic publishing initiative thanks to the fantastic work of the art team.

Score: 8/10
