‘The Mandalorian’ Was 2023’s Most-Watched Original Series in US According to Analytics Firm; ‘Ahsoka’ Also in Top Ten
According to data collected and studied by an analytics firm, The Mandalorian topped charts when it came to streaming original content, while Ahsoka helped round out the top ten.
As reported by TheWrap, Whip Media assessed the performances of the thirty best-performing series using their TV Time app, which measures the viewership of American audience members. From there, they were able to measure the shows with the greatest share of viewership from January 2023 to November 2023.
Their reporting indicates that The Mandalorian was the number one streaming original that got viewership this year, with Ahsoka in ninth place. Beyond the realm of Star Wars, Marvel was also high up on the list with Loki taking the number two spot and Secret Invasion at number seven. On the subject of Disney-owned streaming series, Hulu was no slouch with Only Murders in the Building and The Bear taking the number five and number eight spots. Apple TV Plus took the number three spot with Ted Lasso, and Netflix took the rest with You, Black Mirror, and The Witcher at the number four, number six, and number ten spots respectively.
The Disney-owned services had a combined total of seven most-watched series, behind Netflix at eleven. Prime Video had five series, all of which were just outside the top ten (with The Boys spin-off Gen V just behind The Witcher), and Apple TV Plus had four. Paramount Plus had two series – Yellowstone prequel 1923 and Criminal Minds – while Peacock’s one show represented on the list was the Rian Johnson-created Poker Face.
As always with these third-party data reports, we must warn that this is not the be-all-end-all source of information. Netflix released a full report on their January-June viewership numbers that painted a very different picture, with The Night Agent (which barely cracked Whip Media’s Top 20) coming out on top on a landslide — although that no longer holds if we put together the numbers for both seasons of Ginny & Georgia, for instance. The report differentiated between seasons. Of course, those were worldwide numbers, not just US, and taken only from the first six months of the year.
Disney Plus has confirmed that The Mandalorian was their most streamed program of 2023, and the few viewership numbers they’ve provided for the premieres of their 2023 original shows seem to align with Whip Media’s chart distribution.
