Disney Plus To Stream Parts of D23, New Brazil Convention Coming in November

Disney’s Chief Brand Officer Asad Ayaz made a series of announcements on Wednesday regarding the state of the D23 Expo event. The Disney convention is returning to Anaheim on August 9-11.

Via Deadline, Ayaz spoke at Disney’s fourth annual Tech and Data Showcase, describing D23 as “akin to our Super Bowl or Comic-Con weekend.” Parts of the event will be streamed on Disney Plus, he said, though he didn’t specify further. A similar event will also be held in São Paolo, Brazil, in November — no additional details given.

Star Wars tends to have a presence at D23, where they dropped a sizzle reel for The Rise of Skywalker and the first trailer for The Mandalorian back in 2019, and where, in 2022, they dropped the first teaser for The Mandalorian season 3 and a new trailer for Andor, in addition to confirming the release of The Bad Batch season 3 and Tales of the Jedi.

With the convention held in August this year, it’s unclear what will be spotlighted. It’s unlikely, however, that they will be livestreaming the main panels where Marvel and Star Wars deliver their big announcements. Deadline is saying that part of the Disney Plus content will be the “Legends” awards. It’s key to remember here that Disney does not like to livestream their main convention panels. In 2022 and 2023 they kept cameras off the Celebration Stage during the main announcements, and D23 has traditionally been without a live feed as well.

The added component of the Disney Plus paywall could incentivize the company to maybe consider opening up the doors to those who can’t travel to Anaheim and let them enjoy the announcements, but even that seems like wishful thinking at this point.

Possible topics for Star Wars to focus on during D23 this year are: the second live-action series of 2024, assuming either The Acolyte or Skeleton Crew have debuted by then; the first public trailer and release date announcement of Andor season 2; the announcement of a new live-action series, now that The Mandalorian season 4 is not happening anytime soon; the announcement of a new animated series, now that The Bad Batch is coming to a close; and the cast of the recently announced film The Mandalorian & Grogu, along with maybe proof that they are actually in production by then.

Tickets for D23 go on sale on March 26.
