‘Darth Maul: Black, White & Red’ Miniseries Announced by Marvel

Darth Maul: Black, White & Red has been revealed by Marvel. Coming this April, the four-issue miniseries will be in the same vein as last year’s Darth Vader: Black, White & Red series and other Marvel characters before it.

Each issue will feature a new creative team, with issue #1 written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Stefano Raffaele. From StarWars.com:

Issue #1, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Stefano Raffaele, arrives April 25, and finds Darth Maul dispatched by Palpatine to investigate a prison ship that goes offline. The vessel, however, is transporting a group known as the Final Occultation, and horrors await. StarWars.com caught up with Percy to discuss all things Maul and this new enemy, and offer a first look at the issue’s covers. “At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi?” He’ll have to deal with the Final Occultation first.

Percy spoke with StarWars.com about his approach to Maul. The writer is new to Star Wars but had a hand in Marvel’s Black, White & Red stories for Moon Knight and Carnage. He also is the current writer for the ongoing Wolverine series. Percy said:

I’ve been a lifelong, obsessive fan of the Star Wars galaxy — it’s such a foundational part of my imagination — and it’s a thrill to be able to contribute to it now. My mind is busy with nightmares, so it’s especially a treat to step into the mind of Darth Maul, one of the great villains of this galaxy far, far away.

The silent assassin has a busy inner world. He is loyal to Palpatine, but that does not make him a puppet or a tool. He is willing to make his own decisions — ones that could shake the very fabric of the galaxy — as is the case in this chiller and thriller of a story, “The Final Occultation.”

The signature element of Marvel’s Black, White & Red series is its art. Consisting only of those three colors forces more creativity and expression. Conveniently primarily designed with those three colors, the Zabrak seems to lend himself to that style. Stefano Rafaelle has previous experience in Star Wars with the Vader: Black, White & Red series. Percy had this to say about Rafaelle’s art:

This is pure joy. And it’s such a rush to see Stefano’s art as he brings to life Maul and this nightmarish journey. I’ve always loved blending genres, and horror and science fiction make for great bedfellows. The dark, cold void of space invites awe and terror. We’re leaning into that.

Darth Maul: Black, White & Red issue #1 will be released on April 24.
