Respawn Looking for Principal Game Designer To Work on Third ‘Star Wars: Jedi’ Game

We’ve just received more evidence that Respawn Entertainment is continuing early development on the third installment of its Star Wars Jedi trilogy as the development studio has recently posted an opening for a Principal Gameplay Designer on its website. The post has the Star Wars Jedi heading at the top of the page, so this future employee will almost certainly be working on Cal Kestis’s next adventure.

Here are a few of the most interesting excerpts from the job description (hat tip Gamesradar):

“Reporting to our Lead Combat Designer, you will design, iterate, and own hero navigation mechanics. We’re picturing someone with strong player system design instincts and abilities with experience overseeing design through all stages of development, who will work closely with other accomplished developers to deliver compelling levels that our players will love to play.”

“What you’ll do…

Design and iterate on hero navigation mechanics, including planning of various design elements, collaboration with other disciplines, and tuning the feel/metrics for the best results.”

“Ideally you will have…

7+ years’ experience in the games industry with a focus on game mechanics, player systems/abilities/traversal/locomotion, having shipped at least one title. Experience that includes a shipped AAA game(s) is ideal.”

The job description is understandably vague, but a bit of closer examination tells us some of what this designer will be working on. The post mentions “hero navigation mechanics” twice near the beginning, and later on says the candidate should have experience with player abilities, traversal, and locomotion. From these details, it would seem that Respawn wants to keep iterating on the series’ traversal mechanics. Both games feature the wall-running that the studio has included in its games since the Titanfall series, and Survivor added rideable creatures into the gameplay mix as well. Who knows what else they’ll think up for the next game?

Remember, this isn’t the first we’ve heard of Respawn looking to add to its staff as it starts work on the concluding chapter of its trilogy, and Cal Kestis himself, Cameron Monaghan, outright stated at a recent convention that the threequel is in the works. Still, it’s nice to be reminded that proper development for the game isn’t too far off.

Unfortunately, Cal Kestis’s third (and final?) adventure is still several years away from release. We don’t even know if it’ll be out before the next console generation arrives. Still, fans shouldn’t despair given that there are plenty of other Star Wars games coming up in the next few years. Between Outlaws, remasters of old favorites, and Respawn’s other projects set in the galaxy far, far away, fans of the iconic saga will have plenty more games to play soon.
