Billy Dee Williams Announces Autobiography ‘What Have We Here?’ Coming February 2024
After repeatedly teasing a “major announcement” on social media and having everyone speculate on his potential return as Lando Calrissian (despite the fact that he’d be breaking strike rules if he did so), Billy Dee Williams announced earlier this week that his autobiography, titled What Have We Here? will be coming out on February 2024; the cover has also been revealed by PEOPLE Magazine.
At 86, Williams wrote a book that is “fun and, like Billy, hard to resist and draws you in”, according to a statement by Victoria Wilson, the book’s editor. The publisher, Knopf, highlighted how the story told by the book describes a career that was “unchecked by the racism and typecasting so rife in the mostly all-white industry in which he triumphed,” with Billy Dee Williams then adding:
“I saw how absurd my life has been at times. And how fortunate it’s been. I had fun reliving those memories. I hope it brings back memories for readers, too.
I saw how many times throughout my life I wanted to go right and some force in the universe caused me to turn left instead, and things worked out.”
As the title suggests, and as one would come to expect, one of the central topics of the book will be his life in the Star Wars franchise, which he joined in 1980 as the smooth, cape-wearing de facto leader of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian, in Empire Strikes Back. He would then reprise the role in Return of the Jedi and finally would come back in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm recast the role with Donald Glover in the 2018 prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, and is set to move forward with that version on a new Disney Plus series that Glover himself is co-writing. We don’t expect to see Williams back in any capacity.
