‘Star Wars’ Celebration Updates on ‘Andor’ Season 2, New Footage Shown

Andor was first up on the stage for Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase panel. Tony Gilroy, Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Andy Serkis, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kyle Soller, Joplin Sibtain, and B2-EMO were all in attendance. Gilroy expressed that the crew is currently deep into production on season 2, with expectations to wrap in August and air in “August-ish 2024.”

On the progress of season 2, Gilroy said:

“If you know your ending, it really helps. We know exactly where we’re going. You know what you have to deliver emotionally and what the story has to do. It’s a decision borne of survival, but it’s good for us creatively.”

Minor spoilers for Andor season 1 ahead…

Most importantly, they gave attendees a first look at season 2. According to Variety, the footage revealed at the event showed Mon Mothma trying to rally a rebellion, and bad guy Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) also seems to have a bigger role in the show this time around. Meanwhile, Luna’s Cassian Andor was shown with a new hairdo. Season 2 introduces a number of new characters as well.

The fact that they showed Mon Mothma attempting to rally a rebellion means we’ll likely see her split from her undercover role as a member of the Senate. Of course, we know she makes an impassioned plea for the dissolution of the Empire after the Gorman tragedy, because we see the Ghost crew rescuing her in Rebels. Hopefully, we’ll see some of the moments leading up to that pivotal minute.

It’s not surprising that Syril Karn has a larger role in season 2 either, given the cliffhanger at the end of season 1, when he narrowly rescued Dedra Meero from the anti-Imperial protest on Ferrix. I’m happy that he continues to have a large role in the narrative; his performance in season 1 was supremely unsettling and set the perfect tone for the show.

Does Cassian’s new hairdo signal a disguise? We’ll have to wait to find out more.

The entire main cast is expected to return. In addition, we have also received confirmation that Alan Tudyk (K-2SO) is expected to return. No word yet on whether K-2SO appeared in the footage shown, but we’ll update this space if more information drops at the upcoming Andor panel. The writers are also all returning — Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Beau Willimon, and Stephen Schiff will now be joined by Tom Bissell. The directing team on the second season includes Ariel Kleiman (six episodes), Janus Metz (three episodes), and Alonso Ruizpalacios (three episodes).

Andor is slated to release in the late summer of 2024 on Disney Plus. Watch this space for more updates from Star Wars Celebration, and in the meantime, check out our previous story on Andor‘s BAFTA nominations.
