Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and Imagine Working on John Williams Documentary

John Williams, the legendary composer behind such works as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones, will be honored as the subject of an upcoming documentary executive produced by his lifelong friend and iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

The yet-untitled doc is currently in the very early stages of production, with Laurent Bouzereau directing. Spielberg will be executive producing via Amblin Television; Imagine Documentaries and Nedland Media are also on board. Spielberg had this to say about his connection with John Williams (via The Hollywood Reporter):

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a disagreement. I mean, what am I going to do? Sit down and write the music myself?”

John Williams has composed some of the most iconic scores in Hollywood history, such as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and Home Alone. He created the music for all nine movies in the Star Wars saga, with The Rise of Skywalker marking the last time he would compose for a theatrical movie set in a galaxy far, far away — last year, he returned to create the main theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi. His latest composition can currently be heard in theaters, in Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, and up next, he will conclude Harrison Ford’s journey by creating the music for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. At some point, that was supposed to be his last score, but just this month he surprised Spielberg himself on stage when he said that he’s not retiring after all. “I gotta get working, to find out what the hell I’m doing next,” a startled Spielberg managed to reply.

He has been awarded five Academy Awards for his work and is among the most nominated awardees, with 52 Oscar nominations. Williams started his career composing music for television — this began with Gilligan’s Island. He has also composed music for the Olympic Games.

Williams’ name has become synonymous with the movie industry as one of the most prolific motion picture composers alive today. So it is no surprise that he will be the subject of a documentary about his life. Fans of the composer will be thrilled to finally see the man behind the music up close. John Williams and Steven Spielberg go way back in a relationship that has spanned nearly 50 years. Who better to produce the documentary than a lifelong friend and collaborator?

If you’re keen to catch a live performance of John Williams doing what he does best, you’re in luck! John Williams performs annually at the Hollywood Bowl during the Labor Day weekend.
