‘Light and Magic’ Documentary Panel With Lawrence Kasdan, Ron Howard, and ILM Legends Revealed for Star Wars Celebration

It appears that some Star Wars Celebration Anaheim panels have not yet been revealed, as a new Lucasfilm-produced documentary called Light and Magic has been announced for the convention.

When the development of the original Star Wars began back in 1975, George Lucas discovered that 20th Century Fox’s in-house visual effects department was no longer operational. In order to help bring one of the most ambitious science fantasy films ever made to life, Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic, a division which had its work cut out for it in order to create the kinds of stunning visual effects that the blockbuster demanded. Since its humble beginnings, ILM has had an invaluable role in shaping the visual effects landscape for blockbusters, working on over 350 film productions in just under 50 years.

As part of the May the Fourth festivities, Lucasfilm has opted to reveal that not only is a new behind-the-scenes. No date or time for the panel has been announced, but the panel will feature a star-studded line-up of Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic alumni, including Solo director Ron Howard and Solo writer Lawrence Kasdan, visual effects veterans Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Joe Johnston, and Rose Duignan, along with Lucasfilm’s EVP and general manager Lynwen Brennan. Check out the announcement below:

Shortly after the panel reveal, the official Disney Plus account and Ron Howard provided additional information on the Light and Magic series, including the involvement of producer Brian Grazer:

Light and Magic will be a six-part behind-the-scenes documentary dedicated to Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic’s various projects, most likely with a heavy emphasis on the Star Wars franchise, which has been a trailblazer for the realm of visual effects for quite some time. We first learned about this project last year. According to James Newton Howard – who claims that he has scored the docuseries – Lawrence Kasdan will be directing all the episodes, although Howard has implied that he also directed the series with his above statement.

Light and Magic will begin streaming on Disney Plus on July 27, 2022.
