New Parade Article Teases Details On Lightsabers In The Sequel Trilogy
A new article from Parade suggests that Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be doing something interesting with lightsabers that we haven’t seen in any of the previous episodic films – or at least something that we just didn’t see in The Force Awakens. Possible spoilers ahead!
One of the biggest questions fans have had about Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been where Luke’s green lightsaber went, with some unsure if it’s even in the movie. Now, a bit of evidence suggests that it’ll either be making a comeback, or there’s a new kind of lightsaber color on the horizon:
“Rey uses a blue lightsaber, Kylo Ren uses red. And director Johnson hints that we may see a new hue.”
The full article can be read below:
It’s not clear whether or not “a new hue” refers to a lightsaber color we haven’t seen before ever (in the canon or in Legends) or just one we haven’t seen in the Sequel Trilogy. If it’s the latter, then that would be a strong suggestion that we’ll finally get to see Luke Skywalker ignite the green lightsaber for the first time in 34 years. We don’t have much longer to wait until we find out…
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.
Out of the primary colors, the only one we haven’t yet seen on screen is yellow. Just a thought!
Yellow is a secondary color, but I completely agree that it’s something that would be visually cool to look at.
– Pomojema
Yellow is by definition often referred to as a primary color. There are several different sets of primaries. Definition of primary color: any of a set of colors (as red, yellow, and blue or red, green, and blue) from which all other colors may be derived.
True, but Pomojema’s designation of yellow as a secondary color makes sense in this context, because green, blue, and red are the primary colors of light.
Except it’s also still a primary color. Goddamn it internet. Even my Star Wars safe space is now full of dicks looking to pick stuff apart with arguments even if they’re not logical or needed in any way.
Actually it all depends if you are talking in terms of painting or of physics.
In painting, you can use Red, Blue and YELLOW to make all other colors, making them the three primary colors.
But in physics, when combining light, you need Red, Blue and GREEN to make all other colors.
Lightsaber being exactly that: LIGHT-sabers, I would consider the colors from a physics point of view and categorize them as follows:
– Primary : Red, Blue and Green
– Secondary : Yellow (red+green), Purple (red+blue) and Turquoise/Lightblue (blue+green)
Combining all the primary to make White.
Light can literally come in any color, including beyond visible range into ultraviolet and infrared. From a strictly physics-based standpoint, there are infinite sets of primary colors, so in that sense I amend my prior statement. Primaries are arbitrary choices. They all have limitations. They are not about anything fundamental in the nature of light; they are about the subjective limitations in the vision of a fundamentally color blind species of featherless bipeds known as Earth humans. For that reason, I stand by yellow!
True, light can be beyond our limited visible spectrum. But if they go for a saber we can’t even see I have to admit I might be quite underwhelmed by it 😀
(though I guess I would still applaud such a bold choice…)
Jedi sentinels and at least one or two other jedi, had yellow or gold. Can’t recall if this is still cannon now though.
Perhaps Rey makes her own?
Yellow lightsaber crystals are indeed canon.
The Temple Guards in Rebels used yellow lightsabers. Though they were depicted in a Force vision, I’d wager that counts as canonical.
Ventress has a yellow lightsaber in Dark Disciple, don’t forget there were also orange sabers in legends, Plo Koon used one. I think either one would be cool to see in a film.
Yellow was in the Clone Wars – has to be orange or a mix of colors.
This is regarding a new hue in the Star Wars films specifically, not animated series or other canon. If anything else, since yellow lightsabers are canon (including both CW and an appearance in Rebels), it’d be a really logical and good aesthetic choice to introduce for the first time in film.
Hinting to a “new hue” does not exactly help us. Nobody knows if it means :
– “new in the ST”, which could be anything other than Red and Blue
– “new in the Star Wars movies” which would mean neither Red, Blue, Green or Purple
– “new to all of Star Wars cannon” in which case the possibilities are even different
Lets not forget that as far as I know George Lucas never truely defined what colors the lightsabers could be.
He started off with only Red for bad guys and Blue for good guys in ANH and ESB.
He then decided to make Luke’s lightsaber green in ROTJ purely for visual effect as it would stand out better against the blue sky on Tatooine.
In the PT he accepted Samuel L. Jackson’s request for a purple lightsaber.
Yellow usually belonged to the temple guards. I don’t recall a canon movie Jedi using that colour.
Can’t remember if anyone in the arena in Attack of the Clones had Yellow?
No, they didn’t. I wondered that too. When I was younger I thought there were, but I watched again and there were no yellow sabers to be seen.
Would make sense for Luke to have a yellow saber if his role on Ahch-To is to guard the first Jedi temple.
This has to be Rian teasing Luke’s green lightsaber #IgniteTheGreen
My green is always ignited, i am one with the green and the green is with me.

the white light-saber would be cool
Ashoka already has that so not technically new
Would be in film.

Called it- the blade is multi-colored
Honestly a rainbow colored lightsaber would be right up Disneys alley.
Hmmm…More like something the EU would do. Like an extendable blade haha
I’m cool with it looking like a Bomb Pop as long as it’s lickable and tastes delicious. On a nerdier note, maybe that’s what would happen if a Kyber crystal was only partially bled?
Good heavens- fanboys and lightsaber colors. Smh.
This is Lukes lightsaber. This is the lightsaber he built. This is the lightsaber he needed to build to become a jedi. The other lightsaber was Anakins. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5296f986185e52d737e0efa870c30f5df19d9d8a2740c6c295006c62bc2868a3.png
Would love to see orange make a canonical appearance, but given what we know about the film, I feel like that is unlikely to happen. It just wouldn’t fit with the storyline, the color schemes, and everything else. Still can’t wait to see the “new hue”, whatever that may be.
Darth Trump?
Why would they make a moron Sith incapable of telling the truth.
A lying Sith, yeah that’s just moronic.
I feel you, could be wrong? So, I feel myself, it’s hard to know.
There are a few more tidbits of info in the online version of the Parade article, including Rian Johnson’s childhood playtime with his Star Wars toys, a Luke Skywalker video, and even a very brief mention about Episode IX! Here’s the link: https://parade.com/624560/maramovies/why-we-still-love-star-wars/
I had never heard before that according to Steven Spielberg, “Carrie” and “The Untouchables” Director Brian De Palma was the friend and colleague who suggested that George Lucas write an introductory text for the opening of “Star Wars”…. and the iconic scrolling intro for SW was born!
Oh, yeah, the de Palma stuff is fairly common lore, but this gets it slightly wrong. There was already a crawl, but de Palma told George it goes on forever and was gibberish, so he rewrote it for George.
I think. Stories vary haha. But the crawl existed before de Palma suggested it.
George writing gibberish, never!
And wait there’s more! Parade also features an interview with Mark Hamill (https://parade.com/624594/parade/mark-hamill-on-the-true-meaning-of-the-legacy-of-star-wars/) and an article on various fans like Steve Sansweet of Rancho Obi-Wan (https://parade.com/442226/kmccleary/the-force-is-with-them-star-wars-fans-speak-out/).
If a new hue is needed, I suggest a beautiful bantha brown lightsaber.
Poodoo!
Or, more accurately, poo-hue.
Stewie Griffin was shocked that this was in Parade magazine.
A ‘new’ colour is all very well, but who will be wielding it?
My out there suggestion is gold … Because someone in this film really likes gold.
Mmmmh. Sure it’s the black saber. Snoke’s one? Are we talking of the very bad guy?
Another thing. Nothing occurs by chance in Disney’s world : may be you’ll remember a line in Rogue one…
Cool! We got red blue green in the OT yellow and purple in the PT so now I think black white/grey? Hmmmm
