The Last Jedi: New Details on the Praetorian Guards Weapons and Why Kylo Ren Wears a Mask

The first day at New York Comic Con is over and it was very exciting as always. Our own @JohnnyHoey is on site covering the event for us so make sure to follow him on Twitter for some interesting Tweets and photos. John will do a recap report of his visit in a few days time, but until then we will cover the most interesting bits revealed during the con. Definitely the most interesting bits came from The Last Jedi exhibition which offered some interesting bits of info on Snoke’s Praetorian Guards, Kylo Ren, the ships, the weapons and more from the movie.

So let’s get straight from the most interesting photos from The Last Jedi exhibition.

Long Axe

The Praetorians carry weapons that are high-tech versions of unpowered analogs found in primitive societies across the galaxy. The tempered blade of this long axe, or vibro-voulse, connects to a compact ultrasonic generator that creates a high frequency vibration across the cutting edge, increasing its deadliness.

Electro-Chain Whip

The Praetorian electro-chain whip is one of the most unique weapons in the elite praetorian guard arsenal, able to function as a sword-like melee weapon or be shifted into a plasma laser whip depending on combat style.

Single Blade Sword

This single blade sword belongs to the elite Praetorian guard, Supreme Leader Snoke’s personal guard force. The curved blade, paired with an electro-plasma energy filament running along the blade’s edge, creates a devastating ofensive attack.

Double Blade Sword

Elite Praetorian guards who wield the doubled blade sword were capable of adjusting fighting style mid-combat by splitting the two ends of their weapon to be dagger-like single blades. This makes elite Praetorian guards fearsomely unpredictable in battle, capable of adjusting to any scenario instantly.

Praetorian Guards

The mysterious and fearsome figures known as the Praetorian guard serve as Supreme Leader Snoke’s personal protector. Eight in total, their features are completely hidden behind striking red armor meant to evoke memories of the Emperor’s Royal guard.

Kylo Ren’s Helmet

Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, protege of Luke Skywalker, and eventual master of the knights of Ren. He is known as the “Jedi Killer” among the rank and file of the First Order. His helmet was crafted to mask his visage and voice, concealing his identity as he delves further into the power of the dark side of the Force.

Kylo’s TIE Fighter

Kylo Ren has inherited amazing piloting skills from his father, though he uses these abilities to pursue the FIrst Order from the seat of his unique, angular TIE Silencer armed with laser cannons and warhead launchers.

Resistance Bomber

Now reinforced with new combat craft, the Resistance fleet dispatches haroy bombers into battle with the first order fleet. Escorted by swift starfighters, these munitions-laden carrier ships drop powerful proton bombs onto their capital ship targets.

There is obviously a typo in the TIE Silencer description. Kylo is pursuing the Resistance, not the First Order. This being a typo was confirmed by Pablo Hidalgo himself, so no conspiracy here.

So I guess he won’t be ditching the mask anytime soon.

Curious mistake is right. They meticulously look at EVERY detail ALL THE TIME. Two mistakes on the same object belonging to Kylo Ren/Ben Solo? He went undercover, the jedi temple destruction is a ruse, Luke is controlling everything and Snoke will be destroyed from the inside. Got it. Naaahhh too easy. lol.

I think it may very well be that he’pursues the first order’ as a noun, not the name of the organization. obviously its written with capitals, but it could be just a wordplay on that

“Kylo Ren has inherited amazing piloting skills from his father…”

Still waiting for the child of a good Star Wars pilot who sucks at flying.

There’s also the matter of his granpappy being ‘the best star-pilot in the galaxy…’

“Kylo wears a mask to hide his identity” duh, that’s what masks usually do.

Intimidation is a factor, too. Much like the samurai masks were designed to scare the shit out of people.

I wonder if the Praetorian Guards’ whips will be used on Rey if she gets captured?

I was thinking if she gets captured, the whips are used to ensnare her as she’s brought before Snoke.

I really respect that they are apparently keeping the elite bantha force under wraps until the release of the film.

I do feel they maybe setting themselves up for a fall with these elite guards….you get the feeling they are building these guys up that much that they will inevitably be taken out in the most punk ass way by C3P0

I’m torn about those red guards. On one hand they look cool, on the other they just look totally out of place in a SW movie.

But that’s just my opinion I guess. Everyone thought the Chrome ships in the prequels looked out of place, but that did not bother me.

    It’s fine

Maybe they’ll look good in this Star Wars movie. I’m expecting it to stand out visually from the rest on account of it’s director.

In the behind the scenes footage released, it definitely looks like Adam Driver was working on choreography fighting those guards… perhaps the guards help train Kylo Ren? … I know some people have been speculating he turns on Snoke too

8 Guards, there seem to be some repetition in the Armour. The max I’ve seen together are 5.
4 guards share two identical sets of Armour, just the weapons vary.
Anyone seen any evidence of all 8 together? And what they look like.
I have an Imperial/First Order army to build.

Damn so that thing is a sword AND a plasma whip? That’s badass! Also, I like the fact that Kylo uses his mask to hide his identity rather than some speculation pointing towards him using a mask to emulate his grandfather. It makes sense for Ben to be highly recognized as a public figure considering he is the protege of the Jedi master responsible for kickstarting the Jedi order again, and having parents who are heros of the rebellion, plus a mother who is a big political figure as well. The guy is basically a celebrity, he doesn’t want that hindering his reputation as well as letting that raise questions of his allegiance. Makes me wonder if the people of the FO even know his true identity, similar to how the empire didn’t know Vader was Anakin.
Sorry for the long post. HYPE!!!

I’m not a fan of the Praetorian Guards of their weapons. they just look silly.
also the explanation for Kylo Ren’s mask was weak.
