Felicity Jones Discusses Gareth Edward’s Filming Style and Her Rehearsals for Rogue One

Felicity Jones has revealed that her character Jyn Erso had to undergo daily martial art lessons for her scenes in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘. Read on for more!

‘Rogue One’ star Felicity Jones has been tasked with taking on a physical female lead role for the new spin-off film that Daisy Ridley (Rey) handled so well in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Jones stars as the co-leader of a Rebel group that takes on a tyrannical empire who is in the process of creating the ultimate power in the universe.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via Gamesradar.com), Jones was asked about the physical requirements that were required for her role as Sergeant Jyn Erso. The actress said that she has never tackled such a physically demanding role in her young career.

“I’ve never done this level of physical preparation for something. Particularly for Rogue One where I was training every day and doing kung fu rehearsals on a daily basis,” she explains in an interview in the new issue of Total Film magazine. “But that’s part of the reason I wanted to do it, because it was very different from what I’ve done before.”

The actress also spoke a few words about ‘Rogue One’ director Gareth Edwards’ film making style that seems to bring a whole different feel to the Star Wars universe.

“Gareth often holds the camera himself, and he will watch the scene and change camera positions, depending on what we’re doing as actors,” she says. “We would often shoot in a 360-degree set. There would be supporting artists everywhere, moving around. You wouldn’t know where people were going to be. It was very much trying to find a documentary style within the framework of Star Wars.”

I feel like we have been hearing about his filming style way too much like last years practical effects. Talk about something else in the movie like actual story. We get it

I don’t think they are allowed to talk about much else.

Why don’t you wait for the movie to release and be surprised! Self entitled generation!…

The story is GREAT and so refreshing and new. That’s basically all you’ll get on that front as well.

What else do you want them to say without spoiling the whole movie? The film is about how the Rebels recruit some people to steal the plans to the death star, the leader of said rebels has a deep history with the a top Imperial official in charge of the completion of said Death Star. Did I miss anything?

        SPOILERS: They succeeded!

I get the whole “secretive” approach, because clearly it worked for TFA (people that didn’t even want to see it just HAD to, to see what they were hiding), but this is a direct prequel to the father of modern cinematic sci-fi. We know what happens, and we HAVE known for almost 40 years. As far as the story goes, there’s likely nothing to “spoil” outside of whatever personal conflicts they want to inject.

Well. The endpoint is of course a given. They WILL manage to steal the Death Star plans, and they WILL successfully transmit them to Leia on her ship. But we don’t know much more. There is the possibility that Jyn Erso’s entire team, including herself, will perish. I can’t agree that there is “nothing to spoil” here.

There is nothing to spoil here unless someone lets slip that Darth Vader has two twin children. Now THAT would ruin this movie for some of us!

Some people would never happy with anything unless they get to pick the director or be in charge themselves.

Martial arts in Star Wars. Ninjas. No thanks. Maybe put in some Uzis and lamborghinis while they’re at it.

You’re aware that Star Wars is heavily modeled after and influenced by samurai culture and japanese films, right? And that the light sabre battles were already choreographed in martial arts styles?

Uh… what? Sarcasm? Martial arts have always been a part of Star Wars. Kendo, etc. Hell, the prequels had people hopping all over the place. Yoda even did the Bruce Lee “come at me bro” move.

Actually, an uzi wouldn’t be all that out of place. Most of the OT blasters were based on old British and German weapons.

Lamborghinis were probably used to move coke from location to location during filming. Just a guess, but that seems like the appropriate vehicle.

    Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those kicks were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing

Her character had to undergo martial arts training? That’s much easier than having the actress do it! 😛
