Star Wars: Episode VIII to Film in Dubrovnik, Croatia!

DubrovnikA few days ago MakingStarWars reported a rumor that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be filming in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Now a local news site reports that the rumors are true and Rian Johnson’s movie will invade the city later this year.

From The Dubrovnik Times:

The Force is indeed coming to Dubrovnik! Rumours were flying around yesterday that the eighth episode of Star Wars was planned to be partly recorded in Dubrovnik. And now The Dubrovnik Times can confirm that the rumours are actually TRUE.

And The Dubrovnik Times has learned from more than one reliable inside source that the rumours are true, Star Wars will indeed be filmed in Dubrovnik this year. The City of Dubrovnik and the Mayor of Dubrovnik met with the film producers at the end of 2015 and, according to our source, the city can look forward to being the host of yet another major film production.

Fortress

The city of Dubrovnik is located on the Adriatic Sea and has already been used as a filming location for the TV hit Game of Thrones.

At first glance, while extremely beautiful the city doesn’t look like something that could fit in the galaxy far, far away. My personal guess is that they could probably use the coastal fortress as a possible filming location, or perhaps the nearby island. Another possibility is that they could use some of the buildings for several interior shots, in a similar fashion as they did in Italy for the Prequel Trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is expected to begin filming next month.

I think it can fit into Star Wars. Big galaxy so no problem seeing a planet or aesthetic that may be new.

The location is very similar to the Luke’s planet. That coastal walls could easily be the external construction of the Jedi temple Luke was looking for. The gothic interiors of some building in the city could also serve as a gorgeous ancient sanctuary, even for the SW saga.

However, as an Italian fan living on the Adriatic coast, I’m pretty proud to say that, after Ep.8, I will definitively going to bathe in a galaxy far far away 😀

Most likely this is a new planet , may be a prison planet of First Order. Warden is Benicio character.

Beautiful place, no doubt, but I hope it’s appearance is altered a bit. I don’t want to think “Hey, that’s King’s Landing!” when watching Ep. VIII. GoT has made Dubrovnik too recognizable, IMO.

Yeah, if they use parts of the city that we haven’t seen in GoT, and add the usual FX (spaceships, aliens, speeders, etc.), this could work wonders onscreen.

Oh wow! If this is Naboo that would be amazing. I have always wanted see Luke on Naboo or Coruscant!! That issue of shattered empire where Leia was on Naboo, standing in the same hanger where her father and mother once were to then feel Darth Maul’s presence was a moment of epic proportions for me. And plus having familiar planets like Naboo or Coruscant will be great ways to tie the entire saga together.

It won’t be Naboo. Just like Jakku isn’t Tatooine.

Very popular. Number one, way ahead Marvel or DC movies, way ahad Lord of the rings, or Harry Potter, and, yes, way ahead Avatar. Star Wars is more than a movie. It’s way of life for many of us.

In 2001 I took a cruise and one of the stops was Dubrovnik. I knew nothing of the city before going, but it ended up being my favorite stop. Absolutely beautiful. I remember walking atop the perimeter wall, thinking: “Why didn’t Lucas just use this place for Naboo?” Hmm…

I mean we can go in and add them in post but, really, the least a location could offer is their own CGI aliens.

My family is from Croatia and I have been many times. The limestone cliffs of Dubrovnik are not Ach-To but somewhere different(In my opinion). The plitvice lakes would be wonder for Star Wars but being nationally protected it’s probably impossible. Hope this was informative and have a great day!

OMG, it was a dream to see the Star Wars filming in your own country.

This will either be the best or the worst thing for me. I will either be there, or not, watching helplessly from afar as it rolls out (more possible scenario :/). I mean damn, why It always has too be Dubrovnik, literally the most expensive and most distant city in the country. There are plenty of other locations ideal for SW setting. The bunch of castles and ancient ruins surrounded by hills and forests (closer to the capital) for example are ideal for Jedi ruins or something connected to Knights of Ren, not to mentions paradise-like Plitvice Lakes (waterfalls everywhere!), Krka etc.
