SWNN Review: Marvel’s Star Wars #12
This arc ends on an incredibly high note. The previous sentence is about the best way to sum up this issue. This is my favorite in the series so far. The twists and turns this series took are paying off in a huge way.
When we left the end of issue #11, Chewbacca was getting a little help from Han and Leia. The duo, along with Sana, decided to join the party on Smuggler’s Moon. All Chewbacca really needed was a couple seconds distraction before he dealt with Dengar himself.
Luke was also in a tight spot as well. Obi-Wan may be watching, but there’s not much he can do to help the young, would-be Jedi. Luke’s miracle will end up coming from some here much more unpredictable than a Jedi that has passed into the Force.
The Gamemaster!! We still don’t learn much about this fellow, other than he is a Stormtrooper who is adept in the ways of lightsaber combat. More on who he specifically works for, other than that later.
One of the more intriguing frames from this issue. Grakkus the Hutt has a cache of blades, so it’s worth noting that there are lightsabers floating around the galaxy. Artoo is dutifully retrieving his friends lightsaber, knowing full well its importance.
Grakkus is not going down without a fight. It’s hard to tell, but that’s a group of TIE Fighter pilots the Hutt is tossing around. Grakkus posses EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) devices that render blasters useless. Apparently there is EMP in a galaxy far, far away. Sarcasm aside, the EMP weapon leads us to this…
Don’t worry. Marvel did not “jump the shark”. Lightsabers are the only weapons that work, post-EMP. It’s pretty cool to see the Big 3, plus Chewbacca, all dueling out with Stormtroopers and the scum that paid to watch Luke die. Luke is reunited with his friends, as well. Oh yeah, and the clumsily tie-up the loose string of Sana, who I honestly forgot was even there. I’ll let you read about that.
Our heroes manage to escape the onslaught you see above. The Gamemaster is commended on capturing Grakkus the Hutt and his cache of information on the Jedi. I hope we see more of this Gamemaster fellow. The first thing that popped into my head was “Inquisitor”, mostly because of who he works for…
Darth Vader!! You probably guessed it, but it looks like Luke slipped right by him again.
This series was a lot of fun. It took some acclimation on my part, as I often complained about the fast pace and action over substance. I stand corrected. This paid off and I hope you all go back and read these again, because it’s a great story.
The party doesn’t stop there…
@Hard Case and I will post our review on Vader Down later today!

They all fighting with lightsabers? AWESOME!
I had the complete opposite reaction. By far the dumbest thing in the new canon.
Agreed 100 percent. I’d be pissed if I spent money on this shit.
I liked it too, but mainly because it all tied to the story. The collection of jedi artifacts was exciting to see get used. That presented some future possibilities and we got to see Grakkus come alive as well. He’s a cool character. I liked this issue a lot.
Did Dengar just get blown up? He has to survive for we see him in Empire.
Cool. I’m gonna get the trade paperback edition. This is the best series so far. I think Vader down looks awesome too
