J.J. Abrams on Simon Pegg and Daniel Craig’s Rumored Cameo in The Force Awakens

Entertainment Weekly posted yet another exclusive story from the galaxy far, far away. This time they spoke with J.J. Abrams about Simon Pegg’s role in The Force Awakens and tried to find out, will we see Daniel Craig in the movie.

From Entertainment Weekly:

J.J. Abrams on Simon Pegg.

“I will say this in terms of Simon: while he won’t be recognizable in the movie, in all honesty, his role in this – not the performance or the character – but his support and friendship has been massively important and helpful in the process,” Abrams says, shifting from deadpan to sincere. “He was a wonderful partner in crime to kick the story around and ask questions and come up with ideas, and he was an incredibly helpful part of the process for all of us. I’m very grateful.”

“He was a sounding board,” Abrams says. “He would drop by the set because he wanted to, and when he could, he would help… We could talk about things, and he was a perfect combination of incredibly smart screenwriter, fan of the series, critical fan of the series, and friend of mine – but not just blindly supportive. He was an honest, critical friend. And he wasn’t so close to it that he became immune to things. He would come in with fresh eyes and very smart ideas. He’s one of a handful of people along the way that has been really priceless.”

J.J. Abrams on Daniel Craig’s rumored cameo in The Force Awakens.

“I’ve been asked to say nothing by Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” he says.

I doubt there is anyone left who still questions Craig’s cameo in TFA, but who knows, everything is possible.

As a fan of Pegg’s since watching reruns of Spaced on the 13″ tv in our flat’s kitchen while I was in grad school, this really warms my cockles.

Simon Pegg is on my fantasy cross-country road trip.

Pegg’s constant fan boy bitching about the PT made him the guy I am least interested in seeing do anything with LFL. Ever. Resented his appearance in CW, and he’s not welcome here.

No, how dare he be so voiciferous and petty in his constant bitching, then suck up for a SW role. You don’t get to play the “George Lucas is an ass-raping childhood molestor!” whiny fanboy bitch game and then suck off JJ for a part in SW. Utterly classless. Thanks for playing though.

Pegg dares to be critical, which is exactly what a director needs.
No one was critical when Lucas shat out the prequels, and here we are, talking about the prequels again. They are like a virus that just won’t go away.

He is entiled to be critical – let him have at it. My problem with him is 1) he critized the PT films for being stupid, WHILE appearing as retahrd-Scotty in some truly awful ST movies 2) The sheer magnitude of vehemence he expressed in his bitchy whining doesn’t really lend itself to “please let me have a cameo!” – it would be like Serafinowitz begging for a role in the new films – you can’t repeatedly, publically slag the whole thing off and then beg for favors.

Fucktards still don’t understand the division between PT fans and OT fans. The joke’s on you. Stop crying and bitching, do you want people who suck up everything with a Star Wars label on it to aid in the creation of these films? Fucking twats, just gotta accept that some people are more straight-forward about it. I see you bitching about him because he has evidently been spreading his opinion about the PT, while other people working on TFA might’ve had the exact same thoughts but have kept it to themselves for the longest time.

What you call ‘bitching’ others would call honesty. People have every right to express their dislike of the PT, just as others have a right to express love for the PT. Whinging about people you disagree with is pointless. Why not try having a discussion that doesn’t resort to petty insults.

It’s more about embracing what fans love about the films. Lucas only ever saw one perspective and since his was the only exercised in the scripts of the Prequels. This movie has been a labor of love and should be acknowledged as such.

(pfft, a “love” of cash, maybe) Seriously though, my major concern is that the fan we’re talking about in this case is JJ Abrams. The guy has a CV full of projects which ape the style of his heroes without understanding WHY their films work. He makes decent looking films but has demonstrated no ability to connect with material on any kind of real emotional level. I’m sure it will be technically accomplished, but my worry is that JJ Wars is going to be a fan film made by a guy who doesn’t understand monomyth or anthropology the way Lucas does, and is going to ultimately be a good looking but hollow experience.

Isn’t that the case with any director they could have chosen though?

Does the difference between a Star Wars film being just a fan film versus not being a fan film have to be represented solely by the fact that George Lucas is directly involved or not?

I mean, by your opinion and stance on this subject that seems to be the only reason why this new ST is not a true Star Wars film.

I don’t see it in that way at all, everyone working on these new films are pretty much fans of the entire series and more specifically the OT.

George Lucas had his big breakthrough with the OT and had raised one of the largest followings of a fictional universe the world has ever seen. He blew that all away when he made the prequels and they didn’t live up to the expectations or quality of the first three movies. Well, mostly Ep. 1 and 2 didn’t live up to them. Even George himself admits on the behind the scenes footage of Episode 1 that he might have made a mistake and that his vision of Episode 1 didn’t turn out like he truly wanted.

Do you truly want George who has kind of lost his vision to be the man behind the wheel of this new trilogy?

I for one, would love to see what fans of the series could come up with given a big budget. Them being fans of it is not a bad thing imo. It’s better than if they weren’t fans at all.

        1. I couldn’t care less about what his opinions on the PT are (which are just that, opinions, not truths as what he thinks are a matter of subjectivity (and I hate when people try to pass off their opinion as facts/truths – as they clearly are opinions – and try to force them into others)). And please, let’s not turn this conversation into a PT vs. OT thing because my post isn’t meant to invoke that arena (let’s just focus on Pegg here outside of his SW opinions).

        2. I’m hating on Pegg because he’s a talented hack. I know his humor is British-based (and other attributes about him) but still, I can’t find his work tasteful (and some of it is because of his background). I know it sounds like I despise British folks, I really don’t, but there is something about this guy that makes me think that he’s a fraud in the entertainment industry (and him being British is one thing; it’s like he’s over-exaggerating his British card in his work because he feels like it comes off as his secret weapon in being successful).

No, but I am. K, first thing and as an aside sweetie, ‘truth’ may be a titch hard to judge when discussing any artistic endevour. I’ve however got no problem with him saying he didn’t like the films, hell, let him rip ’em to pieces if it gets his rocks off. Pleasnty of people have, and far be it for me to say they’re not entitled to their say. The real problem I have is that Pegg wants to have it both ways – he wants to slag the films, slag Lucas, slag Lucasfilm (while gleefully participating in the mind-numbingly stupid shitfest that was ST:ID it must be said)….oh, and please please please could I have a cameo in the new film? The proper response to that is not ‘Say, uncritical nerds love you, right? Sure thing, Simon!’, it’s ‘Nope, go fuck yourself Pegg.’ Add to that what a complete asshat Pegg has shown himself to be on Twitter, and seriously, fuck this guy.

You know…I actually love most of Simon Pegg’s work. I wish he had a more gracious sense of humor when it came to his opinions of the Prequels, because I actually really love the PT. All of this negativity made me leave the Universe for a good long while. It was not until I clicked play on Netflix when I saw the Clone Wars series available to stream that I came back from the Dark Side of Not Caring about Star Wars. I also wish the brain trust at LFL and Disney didn’t double down on this “Practical Effects” marketing points…I personally don’t care if there isn’t a single frame of CGI or if PIXAR came in and roto-scoped the whole thing. I want mythology, romance, and high adventure. I want to love these new movies, and share them with my new born son the way my Dad VHS taped ANH and ESB off Showtime and HBO for me (my first memory is going to see ROTJ in the theater). I also hope this new chapter seeks to inspire a new generation of storytellers and film-makers. My personal opinion is that they are telling the next generation that they need $250 million to build massive sets, miles of REAL film, and a huge corporation backing them to make magic…that’s kind of what Lucas, Coppola, Scorsese, and the Film School generation fought against.

I personally ride the fence when it comes to PT, it has what I believe a good story arc, but I think the execution was poorly done. For me that’s why the Clone Wars series made me fall in love with Star Wars all over again. The story was great and executed perfectly. It’s was Lucas letting his people do what they do best, I just was he had let more people have input in the PT. So having a guy like Pegg who doesn’t gush about everything could be a good thing moving foward.
