SW7N Review: Marvel’s Kanan – The Last Padawan #2

KananThe second issue of Marvel’s new comic book series Kanan: The Last Padawan is out now. Check out our review after the jump.

Excerpt from the review:

The last issue left off with a pretty big cliffhanger. The Emperor just issued Order 66 and the Clones were getting their blasters ready. We pick right up where we left off with Kanan relaxing after a hard days work. Suddenly, his mind is filled with visions of the Jedi being slaughtered across the galaxy.

Kanan #2

He and his master, Depa Billaba, are forced to defend themselves. Kanan suffers a dilemma which I imagine many Padawans felt…to kill their only friends in self-defense. The Clones are the closest thing to family he’s ever had and it is gut wrenching for him to take them out. His master issues her final lesson to him, and if you’ve seen Rebels, you know what it is.

Run!

Disney really are trying to push this Kanan garbage on us aren’t they. I’m betting the majority of SW fans couldn’t care less about him. I know I don’t.

I am not a big fan of comics but I am checking all the new issues that are Canon. And I can say that I enjoy Kanan the most from all the new releases. It feels really fresh and the art is much superior. I just think the well known characters Vader, Luke, Han etc. have been used and reused just too often. This is a welcomed breath of fresh air.
      Just my personal opinion. 🙂

While you are checking out all things Star Wars…I’m noticing a fade to black trend with:

        The Black Series of Figures
        Poe’s X wing
C3po has a black arm, rumor
        This Storm trooper shown above

Not to mention in the states there is a lot of switching to black packaging for new products
        Even cigarette packaging.

Also there is a theory about the Anthology films tied to the first three figure releases in the Six inch Black series.
        Any thoughts?
And I’m not trolling about race, simply the sudden trend or urge to paint it black, like the Storm troopers from old EU.
I’m thinking this is subliminal metaphors for death. An out with the old and in with the NEW.
This film franchise is getting very Dark…bones and all.

He just feels a bit Lame. He looks like a 90’s comic book character. Even has the shoulder pads, long hair and soul patch.

He’s likable enough in Rebels, but the comics make him really grounded and breathe all things of Star Wars, both PT, OT, and all other aspects.

Whats with all the Debby Downers lately. If you have criticisms lay them out to start a conversation but don’t just run around saying all the new stuff is shit just because its new.

Hmmm. The man just argued he didn’t like Kanan because of the way he’s designed. That’s hardly the same as not liking him just because he’s new.
One could also argue that the whole Kanan/Ezra joining the rebellion takes diminishes the importance of Luke joining Ben on his crusade in episode four. For years we were led to believe that the Jedi were extinct, now they are telling us there were several, within the rebellion.

That is, unless Disney lets those new characters die or sacrifice themselves somehow before the events in ep4 take place. We’ll see. But for the moment I’m not a fan of the storyline.

I’d love to see the Rebels cast in Rogue One, where they die and leave Obi Wan and Yoda as the last Jedi.

We have no idea if they’re still alive during the events of episode 4.

Who are you even defending, no one had given any reasons what so ever when I posted my comment. If you are talking about the Anon that has the exact same post time as me then I agree that anon has a good conversation starting comment.

Well at any rate, the art here looks better than the Leia Comic, and the story sounds relatively interesting, even IF I HATE ALL THINGS SUBVERSIVE TO ANH’S SETUP…
meh, it’s just a comic, I’ll probably dig it out of someone’s garbage some time.

Yeah, the Leia art is a complete joke. This on the other hand is fantastic.

Agreed. It was alright, but now it’s just a bit lazy. Lazy yet still somewhat pleaseant. I just like her crusade and journey to help the remnants of Alderaan more than anything 🙂

I assume your deriding Leia Comics here but I could be mistaking your point entirely, you only used one proper noun in that entire comment.

I love this comic series, and Kanan in general. This story arc really explains the complexity of this character. And for those who find it hard to believe in his existence, they’re still Nazi fugitives on the run today. So don’t take yourself too seriously, and enjoy this for what it is sci fi cerealand for those to find it hard to believe in his existence they’re still not see fugitive on the run today so don’t take yourself too seriously in enjoy this for what it is, a sci fi story

    I know that it’ssort of off-topic, but I thought we’re talking about comics here…
As I heard someone proposed Lucasfilm to do this. I think we should propose this thing:
We have quite afew unfinished clone wasr episodes that are maybe going to be released as story reels. I suggest somehow to propose them to do either short, 4 issue arcs as they did with Son Of Dathomir, or either a series that would last 10-12 issues (how many we need to get a bad batch arc, the Cad bane and Boba arc, kashyyyk and such) called either The clone wars legacy or however they want, in the same way I understood they’re doing with Marvel Star wars (You get six issues telling one story, then they skip to another one and so on.). This would mean quite an income for Marvel/Lucasfilm/disney, and fans to enjoy better the story arcs. I mean, If we had utapau as a comic I believe I could liker the arc even better.
Not that I don’t like the current wide range if comics offer. Just, I really want to know what happens at the end in clone wars season seven.

I mean, that’s the whole point of The Clone Wars Legacy. We got Son of Dathomir (Very nice) like that, the unfinished Utapau and Bad Batch arcs(amazing stuff!), so hopefullly they continue the trend and make the rest of the stuff available the same way.

    Kanan’s growing on me.
When the Rebels animated series first started, I thought he was the driest, most boring character on the show.
I didn’t dislike him…..he just wasn’t very interesting when the series started.
He was more interesting in the novel “A New Dawn”.
But now the writers are making his character more interesting in the TV series.
I like the comic book so far. Good writing with very nice art. The colors really stand out and look great in a digital format.
It difinitely feels like a Star Wars book.
It’s a simple story so far but very enjoyable. Sometimes simple is better. Especially in comics.
You can tell that the writing is geered to younger kids, like the TV series, but it still entertains an older fan like myself.
I think it’s a refreshing addition to the Star Wars galaxy.

How about Max von Sydow’s character is in fact Kanan in The Force Awaken? This would be a change on classic actors portraying villains (Cushing, Lee) and a way to link the stories of Rebels. Could this be plausible? I can’t wait to find out his role (from The Exorcist to Flash Gordon) I am a big fan of his work! 🙂
