I think we can officially disregard makingstarwars.net as a legit source of info. Their prediction about what would be in this trailer was completely off. They got maybe half of it, but only in broad descriptions. The other half was completely wrong. They’re the ones originating the rumor that Luke is basically not in the movie.

Well, considering Luke is narrating the trailer that would probably indicate that he is indeed in the movie. Not to mention they’ve made a big deal about bringing Mark Hamill back for this film and it’s very hard to believe that they’d leave him out of the movie entirely. This trailer just further builds up the audience’s expectations that Luke will be in the movie. Why would they do this only to disappoint everyone? They’d be setting themselves up for huge outrage among the fans.

I think it’s safe to say at this point that Luke will indeed be in the movie.

As great as the trailer was, and it was amazing. The impression I got from it, was that it was damage control. It felt like they just threw everything that has been leaked so far in this trailer.

I would like to play you this line of thought, further dwelling into your statement. What if, all this time, all the images bar a few via drone, were actually taken by JJ Abrams request and ‘leaked’ to keep the media hyped and to keep the new film at the front pages and in the depths of our minds O.o

Ps. On a completely different trail of thought, JJ Abrams is clearly illuminati, proof? an “A” is clearly a triangle and on certain angles his glasses become triangles O.o

Luke is definitely the narrator, BUT if you listen closely, there is someone repeating his words verbatim. A creepy voice. Has to be Luke’s son.

Luke is not the narrator. It is Luke’s son, probably Domhnall Gleeson, and Rey is his sister. And then he’s telling Finn that he has that power too.

It’s not Luke from ROTJ? When he says ” You’re wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you’ll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And… my sister has it. Yes. It’s you, Leia.” That’s not Luke? It just sounds exactly like Luke and says the same things as Luke said in ROTJ? So who’s the creepy voice repeating his words?

The Creepy voice sounds like a whisper/faint version of James Earl Jones’ Vader voice, even with the “chorus” effect. To me it almost sounds like Luke it talking, and the Vocoder/voice changer in the old Vader helmet is picking up Luke’s voice faintly and echoing the voice through the Vocoder. could it be Luke holding the Vader helmet while talking and the vocoder still works?

          • April 16, 2015 at 10:58 pm
            Permalink

Interesting thought! The narrator is sounds like a young Luke and is reciting his lines from ROTJ though. I don’t think the person holding Vader’s helmet is Luke. I think it’s the other voice (maybe Kylo) I think we see Luke putting his hand on R2 and we see Rose handing Anakin/Luke’s saber to Leia. I keep watching this over and over and pausing and amplifying. I should probably do some work.

It looks like Vader’s helmet is on a podium. Is there part of his skull in it? I think so.

It is definitely Mark Hamill, though his voice might have been sped up slightly (raised in pitch) to avoid giving away the store. 🙂

            “I’m a recording engineer”. LOL!

It’s not a 2nd person, it’s just a pitch-shifted delay with modulation and reverb, for dramatic effect.

Having a copy of Fruity Loops doesn’t qualify as being a recording engineer, champ!

Pretty sure the echo is the same voice from the first teaser trailer. Andy Serkis.

And to everyone thinking that Mark Hamill’s voice is altered, it’s not. Pretty sure it’s supposed to be one of his lines from the time period of The Force Awakens. He’s a voice actor. He takes care of his voice, and it sounds more or less the same as it always did. You can compare it to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFiEAh2Q8I8&t=22m13s

“My father has it, my sister has it…” and then when he says “you have that power too” is from a sentence he says sometime after in the same conversation, in Endor.

To those who are saying that the narrator can’t be Luke because Mark Hamill’s voice doesn’t sound like that: Mark Hamill has been a voice actor for years! He’s done voices for characters where his voice is unrecognizable to me. Plus it sounded a heck of a lot like Luke from RotJ to me.

JJ lied through his teeth until release day that Khan was not in ST2…and for obvious reasons. The fact that it’s Tatooine is probably really important to the storyline and to at least a couple of the characters.

He’s doing everything he can to keep the connection between “Rey”, Kylo Ren, the Skywalkers, and Tatooine a secret…and he’s right to do so. Just don’t act like it’s a fact that it’s whatever the hell he called it today cause I’d be willing to bet it’s Tatooine.

It makes sense that he is talking to his niece. Why else would he mention the connection to his sister before he said “You have it too”?

The question is whether Leia’s daughter will be a version of Jaina Solo. It seems headed that way. If her character resembles Jaina, being a Jedi and strong female protagonist, then it begs the question of whether the name will be kept even though the EU isn’t canon anymore.

I would not dismiss the possibility that the plot eventually involves a conflict between brother and sister. Remember, this is Star Wars. Family matters a lot, especially in the Skywalker line.

      Luke (via voice over):
“The force is strong in my family, My father has it, I have it, my sister has it…you have that power too.”

      Han at the end:
      “Chewie….we’re home.”

      Don’t worry, I gotcha:

      I like light sabers…
      The Empire is bad…
This cross guard lightsaber is scary but badass….
This movie clearly has practical effects”
      Han:
      “Chewie, I’m Han!”

Two theories on why he says his father “has” it.
    1) It’s his exact lines from Return of the Jedi.
    2) When Luke defeated Vader, he didn’t die, he became one with the force (force ghost) so to a jedi, I’m sure Anakin still HAS the force.

I’ve been thinking for a while that adding Hayden in Return of the Jedi was a planned thing. I think Lucas thought about Anakin’s ghost.

You can’t from one movie to another delete the idea of force ghosts. And it’s unthinkable that Luke saw Ben’s ghost many times and all of a sudden Luke sees no force ghosts.

The present tense that Luke uses, from what I read, is because the dialogue is taken from ROTJ.

i don’t think it’s the same dialog… it could be close but if so then they added the part at the end when he tells whoever that they will have it… so it’s either a mashup or a new recorded dialog all together.

There is a shot of Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), the chrome Stormtrooper, very briefly.
We do see Kylo Ren’s helmeted face.
We see Poe Dameron shoot down a TIE fighter.
A shot of Finn and Poe walking past one another at the base.
Rey is in a few shots.
There is a shot of Poe Dameron, Artoo-Detoo, See-Threepio, and a CGI character (Rose).
BB-8 socketed in the back of an X-wing.
Kylo Ren’s Imperial shuttle flies by with TIE escorts to the Star Destroyer.

One thing (and one thing only) I don’t like about the trailer: The quick zoom-in on the Falcon as it flies into the crashed Star Destroyer exhaust. It effectively turns the camera into a character and bumps the viewer out of the action. I find it mildly annoying whenever I see it, but it really has absolutely no place in a Star Wars movie. Seeing that in the trailer is enough to keep my expectations in check, and that’s probably a good thing.

    • April 16, 2015 at 10:02 pm
      Permalink

Lucas edited together documentary WW2 footage, including some gun camera footage to “previs” the space sequences in ANH. A lot of this footage has that herky/jerky handheld look. So, yes it does belong in a Star Wars movie.

      • April 16, 2015 at 10:08 pm
        Permalink

When the camera’s movements just look like it’s someone plotting impossible motions in their 3D program, rather than emulating what a real camera can do, is when things start to fall apart. Look, for example, at fight scenes from the latest Superman movie. Camera zipping around even faster than the fighters. Takes you right out of it.

      • April 16, 2015 at 10:12 pm
        Permalink

Yes, but then, unless I’m mistaken, Lucas replaced the WWII aerial footage with spaceships and lasers. That zoom-in thing is a directorial affectation, like J.J.’s lens flare thing. It’s his tendency to indulge in those affectations that I think gave a lot of people pause when he was announced as director. That shot in the trailer tells me that he was unable to completely abstain from that sort of stuff.

    • April 16, 2015 at 10:55 pm

While I hope we don’t get a ton of shots like that, it’s not terribly different from the shot during the Geonosis battle in AOTC where the camera does a quick zoom through the smoke at the gunship carrying Obi Wan, Anakin and Padme.

While I’m not a huge fan of AOTC overall, I thought that shot was fine, because it felt like an old news camera shot from Vietnam. IMHO, that was appropriate because a.) the gunships were loosely patterned after Vietnam-era helicopters and b.) Lucas had originally been part of Coppola’s early Apocalypse Now team and a lot of his early Star Wars concepts stemmed from that.

SO… that’s a mighty roundabout way of saying that this kind of zoom shot does have decent precedence in Star Wars. Again, as long as it’s used VERY sparingly, I think it’ll be okay.

If we get a ton of shaky-cam shots, though, I’m gonna be pissed off! ;^)

The hands might be Billie Lourde’s, in a flashback to Leia’s training. Also, could THIS be the lightsaber adrift in space? IE, Luke retrieves his lightsaber and gives it to Leia?

Also note how Luke – and it does sound like Mark Hamill’s voice – says ‘My father HAS it.” Present tense… it could reflect Anakin’s status as a still-alive-somehow Force Ghost, but… still, intriguing!

GUYS. Luke says, “The Force is strong in my family. My father has it…” to someone. Probably Rey. Doesn’t this give away the fact that Rey is Han and Leia’s daughter? It might not be direct, but it can be subtle. I mean if Luke said “..I have it. Your mother has it..”, that would be too much of a giveaway. I think these lines are Luke’s way of telling Rey that she’s the next great Skywalker.

It’s pretty obvious JJ is doing everything he can to keep the connection between “Rey”, Kylo Ren, the Skywalkers, and Tatooine a secret. I’m more convinced than ever that not only is that Tatooine…but Rey and Kylo are twins. Kylo is probably loosely based on Jacen’s Solo’s storyline.

JJ lied through his teeth about Khan being in ST2..and for obvious reasons. The same is true here. I’d be willing to bet on it.

    • April 16, 2015 at 10:33 pm
      Permalink

No way that is Tatooine. He knows better now to not lie to fans (he said so in several interviews that it was a big mistake). If it was Tatooine he wouldn’t have said it was Jakku. He would have just remained silent.

      • April 16, 2015 at 10:43 pm
        Permalink

I’ll bet you a million dollars it’s Tatooine. There is zero chance it’s not.

It ties the story into the Skywalkers which JJ is NOT ready for us to know yet. The fact he went out of his way to tell us this new “planet name” cements it in my mind. He did the exact same thing in the time leading up to Star Trek 2…he lied through his teeth to that fanbase that Khan wasn’t in the movie.

Also, the way JJ casually mentioned the name of Jaku, he said it almost apologetically, like he didn’t want to say it, because it was a lie. Then, when daisy comes out and reiterates the name, she looks over to JJ with a knowing look. Or am I imagining it?

This looks waaaay better than the anything Lucas did in the PT….the effects are VERY, VERY good.

They cleaned up the Falcon (which looked “off” in the first teaser) and most of the other effects appear quite realistic – leaving one with the impression that TFA is indeed a modern and worthy successor to the OT.

The only thing that didn’t look good though was you-know-who Boyega. He looks very out of place in that Stormtrooper outfit. He’s the ST’s Jar Jar – no doubt about it.

Otherwise, I give this second teaser 9.5 out of 10. EXCELLENT job by Disney!!!

One thing I’ve noticed is that we’ve seen very little of the Rebellion. The most we’ve seen is one squadron of x-wings (Please be Rogue Squadron, Please be Rogue Squadron) and the Falcon. It’s starting to feel to me (and it seems like the trailers are meant to portray this feeling) that the Empire seriously rallied back after the battle of Endor. There have been several posts on this site explaining why the loss at Endor would have been less than catastrophic for the far and away largest military force in the Galaxy. Perhaps (and its not that unlikely with all the flamethrowers and ashes present in the trailer) that we will rejoin our heroes in the Rebellion’s darkest hour. Also, the scene with the rows of stormtroopers and the Red Banner in the background (1:13) feels very Nazi Germany-ish.

I notice y’all are defecating in your pants, but color me a bit unimpressed with the teaser. For a film that has continually been talked about as “practical effects-laden” it looked as fake as the prequels in many scenes. In fact, the first shot of Rey speeding past the painting of that Star Destroyer is a clear reference to the shot in TPM where the camera pans right to reveal Amidala’s starship.
To those who claim Making Star Wars was wrong, what was wrong? Everything was as expected based on the rumors and reports on that site.
Seeing Han Solo again was awkward in the same sense that it was awkward to see Indiana Jones again in “Crystal Skulls”. Dameron Poe’s “Woo!” was unconvincing and another nod to an equally unconvincing “Woo”, again from TPM.
Why can’t anybody release a decent SW film anymore????
AND YET…and yet…I have a feeling I will come around after twenty or so more viewings, because for each thing I personally found jarring, there was something else that was good. Rey looks fantastic in this film, for example. Great choice looks-wise. Seeing R2 was nice.

Now I mentioned nods to TPM but I find the nods to the OT just as jarring, just to make that clear – the shots of the Falcon were reminiscent of the core reactor run of JEDI, but with an added quick zoom JJ style.

Finally I am really disappointed about the design of Kylo’s mask. And I loved the concept art of Vader’s ruined helmet, but the molten goo in the trailer looked silly rather than cool or scary or tragic.

I envy you all for being so enthusiastic about this and I wish I could feel the same. Maybe it will come in time. For now, I have gone from optimistic to skeptical to, well, not pessimistic, but fairly certain this film will not be what I selfishly would like to experience. Not that it matters. At least I’m honest about it. I feel as conflicted as Vader aboard the second Death Star. I *want* to like the hell out of it, yet find myself rigid on the fence.
Excited too, because it is after all Star Wars, but that feeling of “finally the mistakes of the prequels” will be somewhat rectified by a new set of great movies is gone, like a whimper on the wind of hope.

And if that is not Tatooine, why did they go out of their way to make it look like Tatooine? I don’t get it.

    • April 16, 2015 at 11:22 pm
      Permalink

There were zero nods to TPM in the trailer I saw.

      • April 16, 2015 at 11:37 pm

I’ll take back my comment on the “Woohoo” being a nod to TPM. It is of course a nod to Han Solo’s “woohoo” in Episode IV, not a nod to Anakin’s “yippee” in TPM. Got it confused.
But I stand by the shot of Rey zipping past Star Destroyer = similar to the shot of dewbacks grazing (on sand nonetheless) to the Queen’s starship.

The whole investment of time we do caring about a couple of hour movie is amazing. I really want to stay positive about it. I did it with the prequels but the films had so many problems (plot, direction, visuals…) that were difficult to handle. Nonetheless I still watch the prequels as part as the overall experience.

    OK, debate solved.
    The voiceover is Luke.
It is a replay of the lines from ROTJ, just the line ‘You have that power too’ comes first in ROTJ and last in this trailer.

The voiceover is a flashback connecting this story to ROTJ. The robed figure touching R2 is Leia, not Luke, that is why the arm is skinny. There must be some storyline of how Leia lost her arm just like Luke….

Well, the look of Han was kinda expected. Ford is just too old to play an action hero by now, doesn’t mean that character can’t be fun anymore. Guess the old heroes are in the movie, because the whining would have been endless if they weren’t. Hopefully Han gets a good death in TFA. I still don’t give a shit, if the effects are practical or CGI. They look good.

I may have found something…Luke’s voice in the english version might be a decoy…

it does sound like young Hamill’s voice…but I’ve listened to other dubbed teasers, and in ALL of them the narrator is a young voice, as opposed to Han’s dubbed voice at the end…

So…the fact that “my father HAS it” and not “HAD” it, may refer to Luke, not Vader…and the narrator is actually one of Luke’s offspring.

it would be a truly mindfuck, where everybody is expecting Solo Twins and not two skywalker syblings…but all of the dubbed trailers with a young voice…and a clearly older version of luke in the film than what is the real Hamill looking nowaydays…would mean an older voice choice (such as Han’s)…

If that were the case…should I just have found this movie’s easter egg? 🙂

I think it’s stated in the Luke flashback, the narration. OR.. it’s someone else entirely. Kylo Ren/Adam Driver? The answer is in this trailer.. the words chosen, the images shown.. the lightsaber being handed off could be from Rose ro Rey.. I think there is another trailer to be shown at the Avengers. The description of the trailer, weeks back, describes a different trailer, involving Rose/Lupita. Either that was BS, or we’re about to get another trailer.

Do we think that’s Luke putting a hand on R2D2? Could it be another? Mysteriiiiies rock! SO EXCITED, regardless of who narrated.. regardless of anything.

Also.. seen the photo of Ren’s lightsaber? It looks like a saber with a relic attached to the top, sort of rigging it with tape so to speak. So many interesting tidbits. Ok, ugh, I must watch the trailer for the 5th time.

The voices echoing Luke change with each line. “The force runs strong in my family.” (Vader echoes). “My father has it.” (Luke echoes himself). “I have it” (A higher pitched, different male voice echoes), “my sister has it.” (same echo as previous one). Anyone else think this is a huge clue to another pair of separated siblings in the Skywalker/Solo clan?

Forgive me if someone else has gone over this but what if the whole Luke speech is actually done by someone else in the movie as an echo of what Luke says in Jedi. But for the trailer it is hidden.
JJ has done this in ST2 with the Spock / Kirk death speech.
So the voice is Luke’s son (Kylo) and he is talking about his father, sister (Rey) and another.
But here is an original thought. Who says in the Star Wars Universe that the wife takes the husbands surname? Is there any proof? Do they both keep the names or does he take hers? Was Luke married to Mrs Rey?
And what if that is Kylo & R2 at his mothers funeral burning which he blames on Luke for some reason? For not being strong enough to save her like the readings of Plagius and he is making the same mistakes as Anakin did? Maybe he can bring her back to balance the force again in Ep8 & Ep9?
Maybe I need to breath a bit more and stop drinking!

Here we go, the answer you’ve all been waiting for:

The first four lines are spoken with the creepy echo voice.
The last line does not have the creepy echo voice.

What do we make of this? I propose that there is an echo on the first four lines because they are equally true for Luke and for Kylo Ren (if it is, indeed, KR echoing him).

    1) “The force is strong in my family” – The Skywalker Family (for both).
    2) “My father has it” – Anakin for Luke, Han for KR? (Admittedly the weakest link here; maybe “father” generally means “parent” – so it could be Leia. Or it could even be that Luke is the father of KR…? It also explains the “HAS” vs. “HAD” – KR’s father is still alive, so HAD wouldn’t make sense. Luke’s father technically has it still as a force ghost, too, as some others have already mentioned.)
    3) “I have it” – Luke and KR both have it
    4) “My sister has it” – Leia for Luke, Rey for KR
    5) “You have that power, too.” – No echo, meaning that Luke is saying this to encourage the next Jedi in line, whereas KR wouldn’t want another to have it.

Just conjecture, of course, but I think I could be onto something here…

It does seem odd that it’s the first generation TIE design that is so prevalent now when the Empire was moving toward the TIE interceptor design by ROTJ. But now we only see the original TIEs again with a new paint job. This just seems odd to me.

This is why I have often thought some of the PT fighter designs would have been better suited to this sequel trilogy instead.

There’s a lot of nostalgia in these clips. Darth Vader’s mask. Destroyed Star Destroyers and X-Wings. The Empire seems as strong as ever, while the Rebels (I’m assuming they are still Rebels since the Empire is still around) seem to look as if everything is on the line; just as it was in Episodes IV, V & VI.

I wonder if the warlord angle from the Expanded Universe is still viable? That red banner isn’t the original symbol of the Empire. Maybe somehow the Empire filled in the power vacuums pretty quickly after their defeat over Endor. At least from this trailer the Empire looks very well financed and fresh. The Kylo Ren character seems to be hunting somebody.

The Empire seems to be doing just fine with the loss of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. New troops, upgraded TIE fighters and Destroyers – a new Sith prospect to rally behind. I can’t speak upon the state of the Rebel Alliance just based on these trailers. Maybe whatever’s left of them are fighting to survive in a renewed Galactic Empire. Who’s to say otherwise?

Great to see Han Solo and Chewbacca together again. They both look pretty damn rough, I must say. I was trying to give the EU a chance until they killed Chewie. Big mistake. Can’t kill Chewbacca in a book, sorry. That extragalactic invasion story arc seemed a little farfetched even for Star Wars.

90% of me is glad that the EU has been mostly chucked, though I’m sure a few common sense elements will remain, such as Leia and/or Luke having children. It would be even more interesting if neither of them had physically created children, and the legend of the Skywalkers is continued though another manifestation of the force on Tatooine, this time for the light side – and female. The new way of telling George Lucas’ story is way more exciting and interesting than the EU stuff, and now that we can put the EU to rest officially we can ignite the imaginations of future generations of Star Wars lovers. This is about the future after all. As groundbreaking as the original trilogy was, Star Wars would have died if it weren’t for today’s advances in filming and storytelling. It’s because of the new that Episodes 1-3 were possible. The Star Wars saga can be told correctly and be a mainstay for the next 20 years.

      Agreed 100%.

More importantly, Luke and R2 seem to be in a place that looks just like Mustafar.

Seems to me that instead of being captured, Luke’s gone missing ’cause he’s going around the galaxy, trying to find out more about what happened to his father, and obviously Mustafar is a key place in Anakin’s story.

In the same shot it appears the troopers flanking the very Imperial looking officers / dignitaries on the balcony are wearing classic Sand Trooper style pauldrons. To the far right (opposite the TIES) appears to be the new troop transport / shuttle disgorging a squad of said troopers. Also note the row of Snowtroopers in single file just below the balcony. I don’t know if someone already said this, as there are too many comments to check.

I’m French, and the translation they chose for “you have it too” is “vous avez ce don, vous aussi”. The choice of “vous” for “you” can only mean two things in French:
    1. he’s speaking very respectfully to someone (as Luke did with Leia in the French version);
    2. he’s speaking not to one person only, but to a plurality of people.

I wouldn’t read much into that.

Spanish is my native tongue, and the dubbed versions of all previous films are TERRIBLE.

It gets a little better with subtitled versions, but still translators get many things wrong. Guess Lucasfilm hasn’t realized that there’s many a translator that is also a big SW fan, who would NEVER get it wrong, like yours truly, haha.

In all seriousness, maybe this was the case with the French version that you speak of: a matter of an inaccurate translation.

French versions are also AWFUL, they can’t get a name right (Han becomes Ian, Chewie was a first named Chicktabba, the Death Star becomes in french the Black Star, just for a few examples). I looked ONE TIME the first trailer in french and couldn’t stand it. I would prefer a thousand times seeing a movie with original soundtrack, whatever the language is, rather than in french audio.

I just don’t get the confusion. The trailer is crystal clear:

“My father has it”= shot of Vader’s burnt mask & helmet.

“I have it”= shot of Luke’s prosthetic hand resting on R2’s dome.

“My sister has it”= shot of Leia’s hand receiving Luke/Anakin’s lightsaber.

That is no mystery. The idea here is to keep you wondering as to whom Luke is speaking to when he says “You have that power too”, not if the voice belongs to him. Even a six-year old could see this.

Thank you. It’s not even remotely close to being trigonometry.

AND I think it’s almost as clear as to whom Luke is speaking to. Hint: she’s a junker on a desert planet. Look at how the trailer is set up and how/where she is placed within it. Look at her facial expressions- especially her last shot 😉

      Everyone else, You’re Welcome.

My money’s on Rey being Luke’s listener too. And I’m almost 100% sure that she’s Han and Leia’s kid.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that Daisy Ridley has more than little of Natalie Portman and a young Carrie Fisher in her.

Nope, you’re most certainly not alone in that observaton. Right now she’s looking like she grabbed her role by the throat and commanded it to be memorable and believable. It’s ON!

      @ Darth Vedder

Nope. Leia isn’t receiving Luke’s saber. The hand is way too young. It’s most likely Ridley.

Which, if true, then I don’t what to think since Star Wars protagonists have always been male.

A little girl fighting big bad Kylo Ren and whomever his bigger, badder master is seems rather difficult to believe.

But I grew up in the John Wayne era….so you know.

The dynamic you’re missing, however, is that there’s a pretty good chance she’s fighting her BROTHER. So with that being said all the classic hero and John Wayne stuff goes out the window when it becomes a family thing.

If the story goes the way I’m pretty sure it’s going to go….it’s gonna be fantastic.

Finn is the on front-center-left, who’s holding the same disciplined posture as the troopers in the background.

Rey is front-center-right, looking up at the view.

    The shot with the stormtroopers:

Anyone else notice the mysterious figure up on the stage in the background?
There are a bunch of cloaked guys, and a few snowtroopers standing in line, but there’s ONE guy who is front/center, it looks like they just finished an empowering bad-guy speech. Freeze-framing on HD, I see a cloaked figure, not sure if their back is turned or facing forward. But their head is shiny. So either it’s Kylo Ren speaking, facing forward with his rather monotoned outfit blending into the cloak, with his mask shiny in the light

    OR

It’s Chrometrooper with their back turned, and were looking at the back of their helmet.

or it’s a Third Character we’ve yet to hear of, maybe a Grand Moff. or Gleeson. That’d be interesting, if the Empire got a new emperor, but it’s a young guy, maybe the “reincarnation — 😉 ;)” of Sheev Palpatine?…

PS, I’m pretty sure the voice is Mark Hamill pulling a Galadriel.
Record the speech, and then record it again in a creepy voice.
Two tracks, one actor. I know he did the same thing w/ Darth Bane ghost in CW. – not reading too much into it, I think they just wanted to make the trailer cool.

    PPS: “My father HAS it.”
    What’s with the present tense??
is he referring to Hayden-ghost as being currently alive?

Anybody realize how that Bespin Lightsaber could be actually over or up to 60 years old? Account for the 30 years between TFA and ROTJ, account for 5 years or so between VI and IV, account for 18-20 years between IV and III, and 4-5 years between III and end of II where Anakin gets a new lightsaber (the one he uses in Clone Wars and III). Anakin got his original saber cut in half in the Trade Federation factory and then gets a new lightsaber by the time he marries Padme. That lightsaber has a lot of history behind it and a lot of wear and tear lol. Interesting to find out how it managed to be salvaged after the Bespin stuff….

The line Luke uses is not a rehash or play on the line used in Rotj. It’s a snip it of a conversation in the new movie that much is clear. He is talking to someone that he has recently met that isn’t aware of the relationship they share. It’s clear that if it’s a child of Han and Leia or even a child of Luke himself, they are just meeting for the first time. Remember No one knows where Luke is at the start of the movie. He is in hiding. This has been all but confirmed. The part most are missing here is Luke’s voice is talking over what sounds like a quiet Vader voice and talks of his Father having the force in the present tense. As if he is still alive or found a way to bring him back.I belive this part of the trailer clearly is ment to hint at something more than there Seems.

I’ve thought this from the day I first heard they were going to make episode 7…and after seeing this trailer and just reconciling it all in my head….

I have zero doubt that Kylo Ren is at least loosely based on Jacen Solo.

Han and Leia had twins. One went bad (Kylo) the other turned from the path of being a Jedi once she saw what happened to her brother (“Rey”). They are now being thrown back into the same universe by the discovery of Luke’s lightsaber.

And that planet is absolutely Tatooine. Anyone who can’t see through JJ’s lies prior to the release of one of his movies didn’t follow any of the series of events leading up to Star Trek 2 when he swore Khan wasn’t in the movie.

    Uh…..NOPE

Wishful thinking for former EU foundations to be applied in these films is a needless and unjustified exercise in futility. If the former EU was that important or relevant to Disney’s consideration of film continuity for canonical sake, the Legends tag wouldn’t have been implemented so tightly on the saga.

You’re wrong all the way around homeboy.

      A) I hated the EU
      B) Kylo and “Rey” are Han/Leia’s kids

The simple fact JJ is pulling a Khan and now going out of his way to say that planet isn’t Tatooine is just an attempt to keep the fans from associating “Rey” and/or Kylo to the Skywalkers….for now.

This is a continuation of the saga…and the saga is about the Skywalkers. A story about two Skywalker offspring that choose different paths makes for a great basis for a new trilogy if you ask me. It has NOTHING to do with the EU…it has to do with it making sense. And I said “loosely” based…as I don’t think we’ll see very many elements of the EU at all. That Jacen Solo story, however, just fits in too well and could be viewed by Disney as a sort of “concession” to EU readers.

As I mentioned before…I was no fan of the EU and in all honesty I never even read one of the EU novels. The only reason I know the Jacen Solo story is cause of Wookie-pedia.

Allow an old fanboy to grasp at straws here.

Body posture is very important in defining a character. Revenge of the Sith ruined my last image of Darth Vader by having him cross his arms across his chest while gazing at the Emperor’s Folly. Vader never did that in the OT, choosing instead to tuck his thumbs under his belt when standing still. It was kind of a statement, saying “i’m resting right now, but i’ll still kill you”. Crossing his arms was totally out of character, and also could accidentally switch off the buttons on his life support chest plate.

Now, take a good look at the silver, maybe what they are calling The Flame Trooper. Notice how he is holding his gun? Reminds me of a certain bounty hunter that is supposed to be digesting in the Great Pit of Carkoon.

I get the gist of what you say about Vader, but if killing him was as easy as pressing a button on his chest someone would have done it by now (then), even if there had been a long line of tried-and-failed’s. I assume he had a swipe to unlock, and/or password (this is sarcasm, humour, joke, but no doubt will be taken seriously). As for the trailer, even my other half says it’s style reminded her of the 70s/80s Star Wars films, and she’s no geek/fan.

Unfortunately I haven’t been catched by the hype train yet, probably I am one of the few disappointed by this trailer.

    1) Kylo Ren is bland and uninspired both as a concept design and as a character. Very EU, almost fan fiction.

    2) The new empire style is so videogamish, somehow it resembles Killzone 2 …

    3) A part from the “real prop – real set” propaganda, many shoots seems fakes, more than PT is you ask me: the star destroyer in the opening shot, kylo ren face shot, stormtroopers shot, star destroyer in space, etc…

    4) The overall design lacks tremendously of originality and personality: the new stormtroppers, the chrome tropper, kylo ren, the new star destroyer in space, the black / white and chrome tie fighter..
I only like the ball droid.

    5) I really do not see how all this 3 new characters will fit into the skywalker saga.
I fear that this TFA will be more Rebel than Clone Wars in aproach, if you understand what I means here.

My hype and expectation are very low, probably for the better.

    • April 17, 2015 at 4:22 pm
      Permalink

Seriously? Your reference to the PT showed your true colors right off the bat. Your a PT defender and only by critisizing everything TFA can you feel good about yourself.

The trailer to 99.9% of the people was amazing. You didnt get it. So be it. Maybe you should go to the Terminator or Jurassic World sites and follow those movies since this movie obviously wont be enjoyable for you.

      • April 17, 2015 at 6:14 pm
        Permalink

So what if KyloHate is a PT fan? At least Lucas wasn’t making a desperate attempt at rehashing the “spirit, look & feel” of the OT in the prequels. He took a chance to present something new and fresh. Not his fault that so many failed to share his vision.

99.9 percent of the people also found EACH trailer for EACH of the prequels amazing. Why some things looked even better in the PT trailers than in both TFA teasers.

Nothing about Kylo Ren strikes fear or awe in the brief glimpses of him that we’ve seen so far. In contrast, Darth Maul was mind-blowing in every single shot of him that we saw in the TPM trailers. And the CGI we’ve seen so far looks exactly as the CGI in the PT to me. Now, whether that’s a good or bad thing it’s up to each person’s personal taste.

I also have low expectations for the film, and that has nothing to do with my being a fan of the OT, of the PT, of the EU, or of SW in general. I’m simply NO fan of one Mr. J.J. Abrams.

The only reason I’m excited for this film is because it’s Star Wars. I’m hoping Mr. Abrams will leave me pleasantly surprised . . . for a change. But I certainly won’t walk into the theater expecting TFA to blow me away, any more than I was blown away by TPM, AotC or RotS.

I couldn’t agree more with KyloHate. It’s better to keep expectations low, rather than be seriously let down by another entertaining, but not memorable effort by J.J. Abrams.

Here is an idea tell me what you think Jakoo is the planet that Bespin is above when Luke gets his hand cut off it falls to the planets surface(not thru space so it does not burn up) and it is collected later by the Empire. Fins outfit pictured shows him with the lightsaber so here is how that happens. Leia sends Poe on a secret mission to regain the lightsaber after she hear that the empire has it. Fin after being messed up and tring to go AWOL after the retrieving the lightsaber from the surface of Jakoo by kylo ren gets captured and placed in the brig. Poe during his mission also gets captured and put in the brig they both hatch a plan to escape with the help of bb8 and reaquire the lightsaber (kinda like R2-D2 saving our heroes form the trash compactor on the first Death Star ) that’s why I think if you watched the video feed yesterday BB-8 and R2-D2 kinda have a rivalry with each other (kinda like I Can do the same as you kinda storyline going) also kinda running along the lines of ANH where it looks like our heroes are done for but are somehow saved from their demise. Poe tells fin he has to do something before he escapes and they get the lightsaber. They then steal the tie fighter and escape the star destroyer. Not sure if they get shot down or crash but they end up on the surface of Jakoo. Rey then saves them and some how steals the lightsaber or just finds it when they are knocked out from the crash. Since she is a junker she then sells the lightsaber or trades it to ruby for the MF that Han Solo somehow lost to someone in a game of sabac. Then later ruby gives saber to Leia when she come to Jakoo for some reason. Just a thought

I think Han and Lea had a fling, had a kid and then went separate ways. Han and Chewy are going to be the lovable eternal bachelors, chasing after adventures, even into their later years. Han might be “surprised” to learn he has a kid, when he meet Rae… This will be funny because Han Solo will see a lot of himself in his daughter, and be like “oh S***, she’s just like me, great…”. This will be especially funny when Finn comes into the picture…

There will be a big theme of parent and child relationships which will tie in nicely with the multi-generation movie audience. Father daughter (Han and Rae), Father son (Luke’s son who is probably played by Domhall Gleason), mother daughter (Lea and Rae)… This is perfect for Disney…

In a way, parent-star-wars-fans are being vindicated in this movie because the characters they have loved over the years and have shared with their kids are going to be super kick ass heroes in the movie and their offspring are going to be equally badass, so it will create this dialogue (even if just in the minds of older star wars fans) “see son, I am not crazy for still holding onto my star wars toys, your dad is actually cool, not a geek, and now you have a place to insert yourself into the star wars universe as well”.

Did anyone notice that the ship that is chasing the Falcon is the same ship that is blowing up the Stormtroopers in the hangar? Does it get commandeered or is that the work of the Chrometrooper?

Mr Lucas what are your thoughts on the recent trailer?

It looks very very well. There is lots of classical trilogy’s stuff but refurbished. It promises a lot of action and gorgeous battles.

Voice in teaser trailer is Mark Hamill’s, sure.

I don’t buy any of the other theories floated out there about the trailer, EXCEPT the echo voice. It sounds like serkis, or a different voice than lukes.

The echo you all speak of is just a delay plug in with the modulation set to slow down each repeat, thereby pitching down each echo incrementally. Anyone with garage band could create that effect. I think its just for drama. That being said trailer made me thankful to be alive.

Not sure if anyone has said this as i’ve not read all the posts but has anyone noticed the striking resemblance Daisy has to Smee Skywalker? I think it’s deliberate
