after taking some time from this show, I’m glad to watch this episode and see Christian back in old form and able to actually criticize the bad in TFA!

Much happier when the guys can call “bad” SW and not hype everything that the mouse is putting out! Not that it matters, but you may have brought me back….

“Much happier when the guys can call “bad” SW and not hype everything that the mouse is putting out!”

Well…film-wise, Lucasfilm has only put out two movies since the Disney acquisition. Liking both of those movies (as I did) is hardly a solid basis on which to accuse anyone of any sort of blind loyalty to the brand.

The problem with “bad” Star Wars is that it’s a highly subjective judgement. We’ve had this debate (and will probably continue to do so) till the cows come home, but TFA is a perfect example. Some folks saw it and couldn’t see past the visual similarities to ANH (which, admittedly, there are a few) in order to appreciate what was going on story-wise. For others, this wasn’t much of an issue.

gotcha…but, there has been many books and more released that Harloff wasn’t too hard on and should have been. That really turned me off from the show as, early on…he clearly was more opinionated .

This episode seems to be more to his original form. I love SW…good and bad, and am fine with differing opinions, but just wanted to see Harloff havE differing opinions rather than just blindly stamping approval on “at least we are getting SW.” This was a good episode.

          Amen to that, brother.

and…I don’t know who the one guy is…but I’d love to debate him about how similar TFA is with ANH…..TFA, from a story point is weaker than anything else in the SW entries.

“TFA, from a story point is weaker than anything else in the SW entries.”

I disagree. The Force Awakens had several story elements that I found quite interesting. And beyond a few clear surface similarities, the characters and their motivations were far different from much of what we’ve seen in ANH.

and you have every right to do so, but IMO…It is by far the weakest

And i would love to point out how those similarities are superficial.

Rewatching the movie, I find it is slightly better, but really; it is a movie that I find is still overlionized.

For granted, having looked behind the scenes, I can confidently conclude that while Abrams should take the blame, a lot of it was Kasdan and Ardnt/ KK. Because, really; that screenplay should have been tighter.

If anything, had the movie just cut Starkiller base and had Poe join the group, the movie would have been so much better. Heck, cut that rathar sequence and use that time to focus on developing the characters, world (or both) and you have yourself a solid movie.

Because, my issue isn’t that TFA copied ANH. That I find is a pedantic reason and defenders use to shift the goalpost. I find that it wasn’t clever enough in how it used ANH and the production crew only had a superficial understanding of ANH.

It is evident in that Rey’s story ISN”T an underdog story. It is a story of self-discovery/ locating a legend. So, that begs the question: why use a story that fundamentally is at odds with what they are trying to portray?

SWs at its best has always been like a D&D campaign. And while a good start, the Starkiller stuff basically was a glorified side quest. When the goal of locating Luke should have been the focus.

sw fans are impredictable, cause they play battlefront all day long and forget to take teir medicices properly, but JJ Abrams is the logical director for SW IX – he has been the only person in the world that produced a quality SW PRODUCT (movies, cartoons, games… ). Beside the OT, every SW produt is questionable. Even Rogue One had flaws and looked like a fan version of a movie

I liked TFA. Not everyone does I get that. JJ isn’t a hack or an idiot as some suggest. Star Wars is so iconic that you’ll never please everyone. Even Mark Hamill said he didn’t picture Luke’s story turning out the way it will (does) in The Last Jedi. If you listen to the TFA commentary especially the first 30 minutes or do you can I hear where they were trying to do. Mix the new with the old to bring back Star Wars to the masses.

The question is: Would fans rally around JJ if he got fired like Trevorrow?

People’s opinions will change once we see a trailer for IX. Until then, we are going to get a bunch of fans arguing back and fourth over who should have directed IX. I’ll admit Rian was my first choice, but JJ was definitely in my top 5 directors for IX. Back when the announced Trevorrow a long time ago, I was pretty upset they weren’t bringing JJ back to close off the trilogy. This was before we knew anything about TLJ. But until we get more information, I will always be optimistic.

Some fans are fickle, but most fans aren’t. I like JJ and will support him being the Director of IX. I believe he will make a great ending to this trilogy,

I need to listen to the entire episode, but really the Abrams segment was a good one. It is nice to see Harloff actually taking the devil’s advocate and not blindly accepting everything. I used to be a fan of Jedi Council, until really it was them just pandering to LF. I cannot fully blame them; the system is organized to where these companies, Collider, Screen Junkies etc. need to pander/ mooch to these companies for access in terms of materials, screenings etc. A product of media.

But really, it was nice to not hear an echo-chamber and see some actual discussion. JJ Abrams, I never liked as a director. I always thought he was subpar/ bad. MI3 is the only film of his I liked. And TFA to me follows a lot of the stuff I do not like: make a big mac movie that seemingly tastes great, but is really nothing new. Just bland, and hollow. Not that I expect SWs to be citizen kane, but jeez; put some ketchup on it.

Heck, I will attest that when Rian Johnson was announced for episode eight, that made me more excited for that movie as RJ is one of my personal favorite directors. Heck, I wanted him to do TFA. But in hindsight, I am glad he didn’t.

As for those who say that Abrams will copy ROTJ, just no. He isn’t Zack Snyder(and I am not knocking Snyder. Snyder is better than Abrams in my view as his line of work I find is much better/ varied). If there is one thing I have to give to him, it is that he listens to his critics. Not enough, but at least he listens. And really, with the nostalgia veil isn’t going to help him or LF.And if TLJ does come out and is genuinely very good/ accepted by even critics of TFA, that would look awfully bad on him?

And besides, episode nine is two years out. So really, he has plenty of time. The real issue I see with episode nine is Chris Terio. A fantastic screenwriter who wrote Argo and BVS wasn’t his fault. But he is writing JL; and really the conversation should focus on whether or not episode nine writing wise is safe.

Because, if JL tanks, oh boy; that is eye raising.
