I love how they keep showing footage that basically come from the same 3 or 4 sequences, with only minor “addition”. It keeps the hype up without being too “spoilery” or revealing anything more than what we already now. Brilliant.

Most of what we’ve seen looks like the first act, with maybe a few glimpses from the 2nd. I’m betting nothing from the third

I’d say the desert is the first act. The jungle, the second. The snow planet, the third.

That’s what I think. I think anyone who has the slightest knowledge of how movies are structured can see that we have seen parts of the climax, and theres nothing wrong with that! This movie isn’t 2001, it isn’t going to end with Han turning into a gian fetus, it’s going to end on a slam band action finale. It’s not like anyone is going in not expecting that.

Indeed, but “…lived long enough to…” sounds to me as if she is refering to generations (as is even mentioned later) and the placements of Rey and Han over those lines adds to my suspicion. But that’s all it is, suspicion. 🙂

Well we do know that a character dies. All the new kids have contracts for Episode 8 so no newbie deaths. Leia seems too well protected by the Resistance. I give her a 1% chance at dying. Chewie is a 95% for me because it would be a death that would not hurt the audience too much. Han is a 99% because Ford said the movie is good. He wanted Han to die so he wouldn;t have said that out loud without knowing that his char would die a badass.

This ‘Rey’ TV spot has confirmed that it’s her flying the Falcon inside the super Star Destroyer (0:18 and 0:25). Guessing Han is flying the Falcon (0:26) when it’s crashing through the trees on Starkiller base.

        1. 0:18 is the Falcon been chased through the Super Star Destroyer by Tie Fighters. We’ve seen this in previous trailers.
        2. Rey has intimate knowledge of the layout of that destroyer (we know this through the official trailer) and knows how to fly the Falcon (well it was her dad’s ship).
        3. Han and Chewie are not yet introduced into the movie.

The cinematography in this movie is beautiful, along with the shots it doesn’t feel like full on Star Wars but something entirely different and new. We are seeing different places, things, people in the Star Wars universe and it’s so intriguing to look at. We are all going to be hanging off the edge of our seats in the theater!

Ps. Old Han makes me sad for some reason…..:(

    • November 8, 2015 at 7:20 pm
      Permalink

The shots look “different” because in the OT, the cameras actually moved around a lot, and in the PT you’re getting a lot, A LOT of static shots and the “moving” parts are all CG, that’s what the biggest issue is with the PT.

That’s why a lot of people didn’t like JJ’s Star Trek reboot because there were people running and the camera swerved left, right and upside down and people complained it looked too much like star wars..

I have nothing but admiration for the work that is being done on EP7, cinematographically.

I see. I thought the Star Trek movies were pretty cool but Star Wars is on another level. This story better be good, that’s all I truly care about. That and the acting/chemistry to make me feel like these characters are my own personal family.

        • November 8, 2015 at 8:10 pm
          Permalink

Yeah, that’s what grabbed us at the beginning… the chemistry between ALL the cast, Vader and Admiral Motti included? (Seriously, that sequence has lived in my mind for the best part of 40 years…)

          • November 8, 2015 at 8:35 pm
            Permalink

That scene is extremely impactful because I’m pretty sure it’s the first time we see Vader use a force power on film. Motti was talking big s*** to Vader and Vader put a sock in his throat. On top of that Tarkin shows authority and tells Vader to take a chill pill. The Dark side was extremely intimidating and I’m hoping Kylo and the First Order are the same or worse. Makes you cheer for the heroes even more so!

          • November 8, 2015 at 9:20 pm
            Permalink

Oh yeah, you know where I’m coming from… the fact that you have made me consider Vader’s first “force usage” is worthy of a whole new line of conversation… would you consider Vader’s “throat lift” an expression of force control, or simply him being one bad mofo???

          • November 8, 2015 at 10:16 pm
            Permalink

lol dude that throat lift was all Vader and pure brute strength. Those plans were obviously important and Vader was trying to track them down. The mysterious figure that is Vader was so intimidating on screen. Vader was almost the personification of the Force.

This could actually be true. My opinion: why would Maz ask Rey who she is, when Rey and Han are going together to Maz? It cannot be Maz asking Rey the question. At some point Rey is interrogated by Kylo Ren on his ship and it could be very well Phasma asking her this question.

with all the arguing of who is flying the falcon and when, what are the chances after poe and finn escape and get separated that they meet up again now with ray who has bb8 and poe having found the falcon (maybe lost there after the battle) and flies it back to the rebel base (going by the flying ability being shown in jaku, hard to believe finn and rey are that good of pilots no matter the possible ancestry) then returns it to han. also han hugging leia is not them reuniting or after possbily chewy dying, it is him going off with rey and finn to likely the planet with the temple and then new snow planet for the finale

Not racist at all, I think you are kinda right. SW has always been about transfering cultural themes and personas from the real world to this Galaxy far far away. Look at Yoda. His inverted speech is how the Japanese organize their sentences. Yoda actually speaks with a Japanese syntaxis.

Bets the wooden performances of the Prequels. I so love this old school acting. Realism has killed many movies of the new millenium you know. We actually need more feels to these new SW and I love how much stress Lupita puts in her voice. Imagine, from what we are given to understand, her character is old enough to have seen the Clone Wars, an Empire rise and fall. She has been through so much stuff. To see the new kids is like a grandmother watching her great great grandchildren speaking their first words. That’s what JJ wants to communicate with this new character. This Galaxy is not only old, it is beaten up, scarred and in dire need of Hope.

After the movie is released the writers and producers will gather and talk about how much we liked the staff, if at all, and decide if they are going to make it a plot device. But still I think JJ wants his new heroes to come from humble beginnings and to tell you the truth, wielding a powerful Sith weapon as a scarvenging stick and not know about it doesn’t work for me.

It’s possible. Kylo is definitely after Rey and I wonder why. Darth Vader wasn’t really after Luke until ESB. He didn’t even know who Luke was in the Death Star run in ANH. Just by the trailers and tv spots I feel like Kylo is already more menacing than Vader was in ANH.

Vader was after the “Son of Skywalker” aka Luke. Vader showed no interest in his OWN LIGHTSABER… if this “blue lightsaber” has any significance it could only be because it contains the plans of the new death star (read: Starkiller base…), however it is more likely that BB-8 has the plans we are looking for…

In the Marvel Vader comic he finds out Luke is his son before ESB which I found weird but rather interesting..I guess he was just playing stupid when the emperor told him this during the movie. No sorry, to me Kylo is not nearly as threatening as Vader. Don’t get me wrong, I like what they have done with the character so far, but i feel like he is trying too much to live up to expectations he has put himself in front of him. That makes him vulnerable. After Padme, Vader was never vulnerable again, at least not until ESB when he was told by Boba that Luke was his son. To me Kylo is just as JJ told us, a novice, an unfromed villain. I bet that he will turn to the Light at some point during this new trilogy.

Yeah I’m betting that Maz was alive during the Prequel era.

Notice in that shot when Han, Rey and Finn are entering the gates of Maz’s fortress. Most of those colorful flags and banners come from the Prequel era, and that big red walking droid looks like something right out of the Prequels. I think this is intentional.

I think these three go to Maz because Han heard she knew the Jedi back in the Prequel era. They show her Luke’s/Anakin’s lightsaber, hoping she can tell them about it.

I think the biggest revelation in this moment won’t be about Luke or Anakin but about Finn. He is related to a Jedi, but never knew this. I am going to bet it’s Mace, who is perhaps a grand uncle of his.

I’m not saying it is going to suck, but it just may be “OK”, like a lot of these franchise films, and that’s going to crush a lot of fans. The smart option is not to let your hopes run away with you. This isn’t going to be the film we think it’s going to be. It is going to be what it is, and we will need to deal with that, whatever that may be, on December 19th.

There’s nothing wrong with getting excited like a kid again over the potential of the movie being amazing.

Yes it could suck, yes it could be great.

Erring on the side of the pessimist by expecting it to suck and reminding yourself over and over again that you’ve been hurt before and to never get excited again is just dumb to me. It’s like the girlfriend that never gets over her ex boyfriend because she’s been hurt before, and she’ll never love again.

I never want to be able to tell my kids or grandkids that I was there for Star Wars Ep. 7 and I wasn’t excited or hyped because I was selfish and I didn’t want to be let down again. I want to be able to tell them I fully embraced the hype and excitement and it paid off or it didn’t.

But the evidence just keeps stacking up. Here’s the timeline:

        1. The “final” trailer is released. It strongly suggests that Rey, Kylo and Finn are all Force sensitive. And Kylo is seen from behind, without his mask, using the cross-saber: He is clearly NOT Luke, but Adam Driver (as seen in the Vanity Fair photo shoot).

        2. At a public event, George Lucas jokingly asks JJ what about Anakin’s grandchildren? JJ evades the question. The whole exchange seems to have been staged as a joke and hint.

        3. The Duracell commercial features a brother and sister, both using lightsabers — one blue, one green (the Skywalker colors). The sister is clearly dressed a Rey.

        4. Character posters are released, but of only 5 characters: Han, Rey, Finn, Kylo and Leia. Altogether, it could be regarded as a family photo album.

        5. And what do you know: Days later, the Japanese trailer is released, and it focuses on Rey, with several shots that bring to mind Luke on Tatooine in ANH.

        6. And now, finally, this TV spot which focuses on the theme of generations.

Or, Maz, who has lived for a long time, knew another Jedi from way back who she recognizes in Finn’s eyes: Mace Windu.

This may be why the group of Han, Rey and Finn go to Maz, because they’ve heard she worked with the Jedi back in the Prequel era. They let her examine Luke’s/Anakin’s lightsaber, hoping she can help them find Luke.

Why, Mace Windu? Because he’s the only black Jedi? C’mon… I hate people insisting that Finn has to be son of Lando or Windu just because he’s black — that’s like saying “They wouldn’t cast a black actor if they didn’t have good reason!”. That’s racist.

By the way, Windu is prequel era — so, it will never be mentioned again. Clearly Lucasfilm isn’t totally proud of the prequel movies.

Either way it’s quite literally two words out of the entire saga. But to be honest, I still never understood the problem with it. Microscopic organisms that are one single part of the bridge between force users and the Force. It makes sense that the Jedi would have “scienced” the Force into a connection between Midi levels and the force they interact with. But that’s the thing about science, it changes and over time as new truths are accepted the old ones fall by the wayside. Midi’s would be the same as how things work in the real world. We study things and build on that knowledge with the unsubstantiated theories and untruths falling by the wayside. Just because *some* Jedi/Sith believed the Midi’s to be THE connection to the Force doesn’t mean that they ALL believe that, nor does it mean that it’s ultimately the factual truth. The Jedi digging into the workings of Midi’s would have been based on thousands of years of research but we don’t know how far back they started working on the Midi count thing. It could be a fairly recent thing or it could be something around since the dawn of the Jedi/Sith. Regardless of their origins however the Jedi’s knowledge would have been all but lost after the fall of the Republic leaving Midi’s to the annals of SW history. Unless Maz pulls out a womens bic razor and scans Rey and Finn for Midis in the vein of Qui Gon.

I wish PT fans would stop down playing this huge issue. Midi’s were a monumental mistake by Lucas, and also a very blatant attempt by him to de-mystify (remove God even?) the force by explaining it away with natural causes.

What I never understood, is if midi’s are what allow Jedi to manipulate other living things, then what do midi’s do to help a Jedi lift and throw a boulder? How are they able to manipulate non living things?

            The whole thing stinks.

Dude, just because they thought at that time that midi’s were the be all end all of force connections we KNOW this isn’t true from what Yoda and Obi say throughout the OT, from what the Jedi do and say throughout the Clone Wars series, and even as evidence by the limited force training that Ezra’s gotten in Rebels. So who cares? People that NEED something to complain about. It was only a monumental mistake if everything since had been restricted or bound by it, which it hasn’t. It was a means for Lucas to explain Anakins creation without a father, that’s it. People still believe babies are gifts from god too even though we know exactly how they’re made, doesn’t mean those people are correct anymore than the Jedi had been correct about midi’s, which despite all their research, they weren’t. It makes sense that in an institution that had been around for thousands of years and was so dead set in their strict views on EVERYTHING else that they couldn’t see a Sith lord in the same room with them, that they wouldn’t move past midi’s when they found them. If you get so hung up on that single thing that it takes your enjoyment out of Star Wars at any point, I feel sorry for you man. It’s quite literally a single thing that hasn’t had any effect on anything else whatsoever since.

The Japanese trailer theme was “family.” It focuses on Rey.

This one is “generations.” When Maz says she’s seen the same eyes across different people, the main shots are of Rey, Han and Finn.

    They’re just telegraphing things now.

I think Maz, who has lived for a long time, knew another Jedi from way back who she recognizes in Finn’s eyes: Mace Windu.

This may be why the group of Han, Rey and Finn go to Maz, because they’ve heard she worked with the Jedi back in the Prequel era. They let her examine Luke’s/Anakin’s lightsaber, hoping she can help them find Luke.

For example, we know that the three visit Maz’s fortress and it is covered with flags and banners — most of which come from the Prequel era. I believe this is another hint: This shot of the three entering Maz’s domain looks like a shot from one of the Prequel movies, the look of it.

I think it would be lame if Finn was Mace Windu’s son. I can’t envisage Windu going against the Jedi code. It might be better if Finn’s heritage was unknown, perhaps only to be explored through expanded universe novels.

Or if you just meant that she recognises the traits of Windu in Finn’s eyes, I’d be against that too because it’d sound like she was saying black people can only be like other black people.

I think you might be reading too much into the trailer, I reckon what she’s saying is only directed at Rey, who seems to be the main focus of the TV spot.

As for the flags, I thought from the outset that familiar flags were included largely as a inside joke and nod to the eagle eyed fans rather than a direct relevance to plot. However, at this stage anything’s a guess.

Yeah people saying Finn is Windu’s son are being ridiculous. Windu was the most stringent of the Jedi and the most adherent to its strict code. Even more than Yoda. He wouldnt have fathered a child.

It would not make sense for Finn to be Windu’s son. Finn was not written with any particular race in mind, the part just happened to go to a black actor.

Plus wouldn’t he be more like Mace Windu’s grandson by now… Nah simply not happening. It’d be ridiculous.

I think Finn is a brand new, original character, Poe too. Rey is the Skywalker, and Kylo Ren 99.9% likely also a Skywalker, or Solo.

          • November 9, 2015 at 8:39 am
            Permalink

That too. By the time TFA happens, Windu has already been dead for about 50 years; Finn is in his twenties. If they were related in any way, Windu would have to be his great uncle or something, but that’s reeeaally stretching it. And again, Finn wasn’t written as a black character.

So I agree, Finn is unrelated to anyone from the existing films. Poe’s parents were revealed in the recent Shattered Empire comic, so that obviously rules him out too. As for Rey and Kylo Ren, I seem to be alone in thinking that they won’t have any relation to Luke, Han, or Leia. Seems too predictable, and I think Abrams is going to want to throw us a curveball. I guess we’ll see soon enough. Just 39 days to go…

When I saw Han in the snow, I felt relieved in that he probably survives to the last act of the film (assuming they only go to the starkiller planet at the end). A few seconds later I see Rey piloting the Millenium Falcon from Han’s seat and go back to worrying that Han maybe doesn’t do enough shooting first to survive the movie after all.

At least it looks like if Rey inherits his ship, she doesn’t also steal his clothes like Lando did.

All good points. However, we’ve got Lando who’s sidekick can be activated or deactivated via a control panel on his wrist. What kind of boss does that to his employees? Not even Vader.

To his credit, Lando did communicate to the people he’s responsible for to evacuate cloud city… just as he was about to board his own escape craft. No doubt planning to use the mass escape to cover his own. Where might we suppose those captured on cloud city ended up? Possibly forced labour in building a second Death Star? Only to be obliterated by their previous employer as he gleefully yahoo’s his way out of the blast radius. And at the end of Return of the Jedi, did we see him hug one Ewok? Even one? No.

How dare you try to disparage the hero known as Lando Calrissian. He makes a deal to save his gas colony and the people there only to be lied too by the Empire. While escaping said colony in attempt to save Han, whom I remind you had no problem leading the empire there to save his own butt, Han’s lover and Wookie slave, he risked his own life by taking the time to warn the people of the colony of the Empire’s treachery giving them all time to potentially escape the empire’s clutches. And, Lobot was no side kick or slave like Chewbacca(no doubt this so-called life debt was staged by Han, who had no problem cheating Lando out of his ship among other things already discussed), he was a part droid employee doing his job.

After that, Lando stepped up to be the leader in the destruction of the Second Death Star. Not for a reward, glory, or to save his lover, like Han, but because it was the right thing to do.

All of which he did to try to win the attentions of a certain Princess. He was trying to hit on her the moment he noticed her regal posture. Lando didn’t give the colony a second thought once he calculated the potential net worth of the Princess.

Lando’s lack of presence in the Force Awakens proves that once he realised he wasn’t going to win her hand (and fortune) that he might as well up and move on to set up his next tax avoiding venture in an outer rim colony.

He didn’t need to be convinced that there would be more wealth then he could imagine to be a hero, like someone else out there.

As for Force Awakens, I expect typical Han. Out for himself and his own agenda more than anything else.

If this movie turns out to be have a good story and characters, and it looks like it will do, then I truly do want to see the reaction of people who love/like/don’t mind the prequels. I probably shouldn’t be talking about this … but yeah I wonder if then people might realise that the prequels were pretty poorly made films all round, when we see what should have been possible and how it should have been made during the prequel era. I mean everything from effects to script to acting.

Honestly the prequels feel like a straight to DVD movie to me vs the OT and what this new trilogy is shaping up to be. Like those weird films Disney put out using Toy Story IP or whatever, but made on the cheap and with less quality and never release in the cinema. That’s the prequels to me. They ARE the story, but I don’t particularly enjoy that story and I could be doing without it and how badly it was done.

I think these new movies will have a pin sharp focus on telling a great overarching story. Possibly even better than the OT did, as we have Kathleen and co plotting it out from the beginning. With the OT George wanted to do the whole thing in one film, then had to pare back his ideas and whole bunch of stuff massively changed to work it into 3 films at the time. I genuinely think this trilogy could.. COULD be better than the OT. Obviously for us it might not quite recreate the same child like feelings we’v all had. That’s lost to us now. But I do wonder, kids growing up with these films now, with many seeing these films as their foundation starting point, they could really work just as well if not better than the OT. And these kids have the OT to look back on AFTER, as their “prequels”. Quite a cool thought. I have faith in KAthleen Kennedy, JJ, KAsdan, Rian Johnson etc to do this justice and make it worth everybody’s while.

Most dont question of the intelligence of the people who like the PT, you can enjoy any movie regardless of its flaws. We have a problem, and question the sanity, of anyone who actually says the PT’s were Good movies. There is a standard for good in the movie industry: good acting, good directing, good script, and sometimes a good story as well (though I have seen good movies where I hated the story).

The PT’s had bad acting, some absolutely terrible scripts, and questionable directing (using too much blue screen). So to say they are “good” is simply arguing for the sake of trying to change peoples minds about something they can clearly see is bad with their own eyes.

Again, that in no way takes away from any individuals experience and that persons ability to enjoy a movie.

I enjoy the movie Caddyshack. I watch it probably 2x a year. It didnt win any awards and my Wife thinks its stupid as hell. Doesnt mean I cant enjoy it.

That about sums it up. I love Predator 2, but that’s because I saw it as a child and it was so weird I loved it. I cannot, however, claim its a good movie. TMNT and its sequel, also (the original 1990 version) is a an example of a movie that has some great stuff in it, but can’t be called a ‘classic’ to any extent. Batman Forever is another one that I like and will defend, but I can’t really claim it deserves to be called a ‘good’ movie.

Also, I’m pretty sure I used to enjoy the original early-90’s Captain America and Spider-Man movies….and those are complete crap.

They are average films that could have been AMAZING. If this film is as awesome as I hope it will be then it will illustrate just how awesome the prequels COULD have been, but it won’t change how I feel about the prequels as fun sci-fi action pieces. I totally respect people who can’t get over the wooden acting or fart jokes, but I found the CGI quite groundbreaking for the time (see the making of stuff- even if you hate the movies those are AWESOME documentaries) and even if it is poorly executed, the overall STORY I found to be quite epic in scale.

Why even compare the two? They’re two different stories..two different time periods. One trilogy showed Jedi in their peak and the tragedy of Ankakin Skywalker and this is a sequel trilogy that no one expected to EVER see. I am really excited and hope that I enjoy this movie and that it would make an excellent edition to the story of Star Wars..but it would not affect how much I enjoy the prequels..why would it? That’s the equivalent of saying that I want to see the look on the faces of those who admire the OT while watching this film when they realize the OT is outdated and that this is film is actually a rehash/reboot of ANH and what the OT could have been!! (I don’t mean that and it hurt to write but I had to get point across)

      Anyway POINT IS
Prequel trilogy: great trilogy that showed life before the empire and the fucking BADASS Jedi in their prime!! And the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker..which when you get over all the negativity really makes the OT way more emotional.
Original Trilogy: Timless classics which started the burning passion most of us have for this amazing series.
      Sequel trilogy: we’ll see..dude..we’ll see..

I have a crazy theory, hear me out.

What if Han is Force sensitive in this new movie? What if he doesn’t die and this is the big surprise we get? Maybe Chewie dies and Han rises up against Kylo to face him head on and loses, well because he is not nearly as good as Kylo? Think about it. Ford said himself that the new movie is good. He always said that he felt that Han had to die not because he wasn’t an interesting character, but because he didn’t belong with all this Jedi Force bussiness. Might as well then die and leave more screentime to other more important characters. However, Ford said the new movie is good. I doubt he would say that unless his character either died a badass death or he actually joined the ranks of the Jedi.

Allright, let the bashing begin, I deserve it! Just so you know, I do understand this is most probably crap but I still liked to commune these thoughts in the 1/10000000 chance I was right.

I won’t say its impossible. There have been plenty of theories that Han’s “Scoundrels good luck” is latent force ability but I really don’t think they will go that way. Han is our skeptic, outsider’s eye into the world of the Jedi, its shocking enough to now hear that he is a true believer in the Force, but he would still never trade in his trusty blaster for a saber. It would be a fun what-if scenario, but they are pushing the young cast as the new jedi. With Han being a wise old mentor, a hero’s death is a much more likely fate

I agree, I just wanted to have this one out there. In fact I don’t know what it would please me more, to see good old Han kicking ass even wihtout the Force or have him pick up Finn’s Luke’s saber and push away Kylo, suffer injury and be left with the only option to go to Luke with the new kids to find shelter. Now that I think about it, it would be ok for me if it went either way. Han would look badass as a Jedi anyway.

I have often thought that as well. Not everyone force sensitive becomes a Jedi, or even knows they are. However it is seen time and time again in the PT and the OT that being force sensitive helps make someone an exceptional pilot, and Han is certainly portrayed as one.

Here is how I predict things will unfold:

    1. Kylo took the name Kylo Ren when he joined the Knights of Ren. He is their de-facto leader, because he is the heir to Anakin. KYLO = S(KY)walker + So(LO). His parents are Han and Leia, but things didn’t work out among the three of them. (Han and Leia are not together.)

    2. Rey is Kylo’s sister. Her father may not be Han. She has been hiding out on Jaaku, because she doesn’t want to take on the “space politics” of Naboo that is expected of her. She and her mother haven’t spoke in years, and she hasn’t seen her half-brother for a while either. She’s been wanting to find her own way in life.

    3. The Force awakens within Finn. He starts to be able to read minds and hear the screams of civilians that are being murdered by the First Order. (Recall how Ben reacted to the destruction of Alderan in ANH.) Finn doesn’t know what’s happening to him, but his instinct tells him to save Poe and go AWOL.

    4. Han, Rey and Finn go to Maz. Han knows that Maz knows about the Jedi from the Prequel era. Her fortress is decorated with flags and banners that represent the people, cultures and governments of the Prequel era. Her place is littered with old weapons, droids and other equipment from the Prequel era. (That big red lumbering droid is a Prequel era relic.)

    5. They bring her Anakin’s/Luke’s lightsaber. It doesn’t work. It turns out that Maz worked for the Jedi in the Prequel era as a weapons maker — which includes lightsabers. To their amazement, she fixes it.

    6. Maz reveals to Finn that he is related to a great Jedi she once knew, but she won’t say who it is.

    7. Kylo and the Knights of Ren are seeking Anakin’s/Luke’s saber, but Kylo is also looking for Finn, whom he has sensed has “awakened”. They want to find Luke, and his lightsaber could be a clue to his whereabouts. (Kylo also wants it because he feels it belongs to him by birthright.)

    8. Kylo (or someone in the Knights) looks into the family lineage of Finn, and they figure out who he’s related to.

    9. Han dies. Rey cries over his body, which Chewie is holding up in his arms.

    10. Kylo finds or captures Rey. He remarks that he is surprised she is now a mere scavenger in life. In an homage to the “Luke, I am your father!” moment, Kylo unmasks himself before her — and she recognizes him, with shock. Kylo asks her, his sister, to join him to fulfill what their grandfather failed to do: to “balance” the Force.

    11. Finn tries to intervene, using Anakin’s lightsaber. In the second reveal shocker, Kylo says Finn is related to a great Jedi, Mace Windu, but even though Mace was a bad-ass, a Skywalker brought him down.

So history is about to repeat: It looks like Kylo (the current Skywalker) is about to strike down Finn (descendant of Mace), who’s defending himself with the lightsaber that brought down Mace in ROTS. Luke probably appears, intervening at this point.

There is a contradiction between Star Wars III and VI about that. In The Return of the Jedi, Luke ask Leia about her mother, and she answer him that she remember some of her but not too much. In SW III she diies giving them birth. I think the second trilogy didnt respect the spirit of the first in some ways.

Not really, the first trilogy was his too. They needed Padme dying in SW III and didnt respect that small part of the dialogue of SW VI. It is a fact the many things in the spirit changed from the 1st trilogy to the 2nd, the 1st was good enough, I wonder why all those changes if it was already a success.

that’s what I meant with “he raped” because there was no reason to change all that canon stuff in the PT, same as with the changes to the OT, if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.

Take this wallpaper for instance from an imgur thread:
            http://i.imgur.com/sx2602i.jpg

It’s just a render of the scene from the first trailer. Epic by itself.. the artist wanted to make it even cooler.. an X-Wing crashing.. then add some TIE’s to it, so it’s even cooler.

But that’s exactly missing the point of what that scene was.. It was cool to see X-Wing’s seemingly BURST out of that lake and heading towards their target. Now the image is convoluted. By adding more, the artist devaluated the image, and the scene. if it had been shot from another angle, adding the TIE’s to it (or maybe just one) would’ve given it a sense of urgency, now you’re just wondering.. why don’t the evade or shoot back? I like the X-Wing crashing into the water.. but wouldn’t it be better if it was shot by a turbolaser turret from off-screen?

It’s the IMAGINATION that makes something valuable, that makes you want to re-watch a movie a second, third and fourth time. By over-explaining and over-detailing you’re losing EVERYTHING that the original was, because it’s something simple that is enhanced by your imagination. This is also why not everyone likes Star Wars, because it requires you to stop over-thinking everything and just accept it.

In Star Trek, you have Dilithium Crystals, warp cores, energy fluxes, negative radiation fields and engineering making sure everything is operating at maximum efficiency.

In Star Wars, the warp drive just work, unless you’re on the Millennium Falcon.

Well, the art in the first trilogy was a mechanicist-industrial era style, they changed to a post-modern style. For example they got as scenary for Padme, Maria Luisa Park in Seville, an example of eclectic historicist architecture 1914, it was not old!

So from a very defined style related to spacial career, modern industry, 2001 Odissey, they move to some kind of ugly historicism that has nothing to do with hyperspace.

Probably they could give explanations about making clear differences between worlds, and this is just an example, but I think some of the scenarios in the second trilogy didnt seem Star Wars.

This is talking about the art, I believe the art in the first trilogy was very good to make all those changes on it in the second.
And about the dialogues, and the family constellation, they should have respect entirely all of them at least. With their weakness too, as they had them.

Leia recalling her mother is her “feelings” of her mother (she is “highly” force sensitive after all, regardless of the denial she may be in…), this leads to a very important question – is Leia actually “more” force sensitive than Luke? That’s another gripe I have with the PT. Anakin was supposed to be “too old” to be trained as a Jedi, yet Luke, at “18” became a Jedi after training with Ben and Yoda in just a few weeks.

But that’s true, maybe she could develop and train that, but she seems to be rather busy with her new role in the New Republic.

We’ll see how it goes 🙂

          • November 9, 2015 at 5:18 pm

Well the way Lucas explained it is during the PT period, the Jedi were at the height of your their power (and their arrogance). They were numerous. They trained from age 3 on. They had many Masters. They had a council. They had a temple with limitless resources and references. They had holocrams.

During Lukes coming of age, the Force is a lost art. A mystical thing to the current populations. Something more of lore. There is only 2 people capable of even teaching the art of the Jedi and they are both old and way past their prime. Yoda has to teach without the temple or any of the other resources he used to have.

Lucas uses this as his excuse for why the saber fights were so spectacular (to him) in the PT but looked so old school in the OT. Sword fighting was a lost art by the OT.

A cop out? Maybe. Does make some sense though.

Yes Luke is 18, but he is also special because he is Annakins son, one. Two he is one of the only force sensitive people in the entire galaxy left. You arent going to hold to a stringent past ideology about age when you have so few choices.

My thoughts, not too dissimilar from yourself:

      1. Agree.

      2. Han is her father, she ran away from home whilst young due to a wedge in her family (Kylo).

      3. I think Finn’s disgusted by the First Order wiping out a village, and his conscience gets the better of him. Everything that he believed, was a lie. He and Poe escape from the Star Destroyer. Don’t believe Finn is that force aware.

      4. This sounds really cool.

      5. Think Maz uses the lightsaber to tell its story (flashback scene). It’s revealed that the lightsaber is destined for Rey, but this scares her, and she rejects it. Finn takes it instead.

      6. We find out Finn’s backstory.

      7. Sounds right, except Kylo Ren is more interested in Rey than Finn.

      8. I don’t think The Knights of Ren are interested in Finn.

      9. Agree.

      10. Sounds cool.

      11. Yeah, maybe.

      12. I don’t think Luke intervenes, he’s not in the movie yet. Finn is badly injured, Kylo Ren is about to deliver the death blow, then Rey steps in with the lightsaber.

Think towards the end of act 3, Rey and Leia figure out where Luke is hiding. Leia uses the force a little more in this movie. Rey, Chewie, and BB-8 then fly in the Falcon to seek out Luke. The movie ends with them meeting Luke.

not super related, but it just dawned on me that we haven’t seen a lot of STARS so far in these Star Wars previews. We see a major in-atmosphere dogfight on the temperate planet, we see what is likely the final dogfight inside the atmosphere of the ice planet and we have a minor skirmish in-atmosphere on jakku. I only space we have seen at all was the the films title, the star destroyer establishing shot and the one shot of Finn’s Tie crashing on Jakku. Granted, there is a lot of the movie we haven’t seen yet….but I really REALLY hope this is a mystery-box thing and there is a lot more space in this movie than they are letting on. Otherwise this movie should just be called Sky Wars. Reminds me of the new Battlefront game where you can’t ever go into space, just dogfight in the atmosphere.

Which one do you think attracts more audiences? An X-wing in space, or an X-Wing zooming at mach 2 5 feet over water?

This is marketing material.. There will be more boring space (hello capital ship battle!) in the final film.

Is it really that big of a deal? Certainly not worth renaming the series let alone complaining about it. I’m sure we will see plenty of space in the movie.

And as for battlefront, anyone still complaining about the lack of space needs to take off their nostalgia glasses. The space dog fighting in the last battlefront wasn’t even really dog fighting. All it really involved was hopping in a ship, surviving long enough to get to the opponents hangar, getting out of your ship and setting explosive charges at the opponents ship systems. Anyone who played the beta will tell you the ship to ship combat in this battlefront is far better, and with a mode dedicated to ONLY dog fighting we will finally see matches that solely revolve around actual dog fighting. Who cares that the backdrop is sky and not space.

I didn’t mean they should seriously rename the films, that was facetious. I am actually quite excited to see planetary battles since we have never seen those before. Mostly I was just saying I’m shocked that with so many different action set-pieces revealed that there is still not one set in space when that is what the series is known for. The first priority is to make a good movie, so I’d rather have that then a space battle, but I would definitely be a little disappointed if all the fights are land-locked.

Yes but what I mean is that Tron actually tried to motion capture a human face which was rather hard at that time and still is. Human faces have so many details that it is next to impossible to get a good motion capture out of one and digitalize it with enough detail and realistic movement in order to place it on another instace. In Avatar you got a dude who went cat, the details went down by a great percentage so it was doable and it had a far better result.

Han dies for sure. It is fact that he asked to have Han die in ROTJ. He felt the character finished his story arc. Han became a good guy and joined the rebellion etc. Now it’s time for a new story where an ex-storm trooper has to overcome his origin/training/learning/propaganda to join the good guys. (See Finn and Poe scene b4 Jedi attack – that is Finn joining alliance)

Harrison is 70, it’s just smarter to have an awesome death than keep a 70 y/o scoundrel around, he will have nothing to do. Compare keeping him around with Kylo killing his father or uncle or killing Rey’s father in front of her. You can’t keep Han, he serves no purpose and is tired of this role. If you kill him you can set up an amazing trilogy.

Also, Daisy looks like a true athlete and I see her doing a lot of stunts and action a 70 year old can not. Harrison also has the biggest career and needs this the least. Now let’s blow this thing and go home.

(Lupine has only shown us voice work but her character sounds great and very Star Wars)

I’m not saying this is evidence that Han won’t die, but I don’t think we can automatically assume that Harrison Ford’s opinions about his character in 1980 are the same as his opinions today. That was 35 years ago, and he was the hottest young actor in Hollywood, with his choice of the most coveted leading roles in the film industry. Now, it’s been decades; he’s had one of the best careers a film actor can have, but most of it is behind him. Wouldn’t a lead role in more top blockbuster films – something he hasn’t enjoyed for quite some time – be more appealing to him?

As for the rest of your argument: we won’t know what role there is for Han to play until we know the story of TFA. And even then, we won’t know the trajectory for the remaining films. How can you say with such certainty that the character of Han won’t have a place in the story art of the ST?

They certainly could make a plot for him but it’s nice ironically not Star Wars. They are action fantasy and just not stories about three 70 year olds with all respect. The death is so much better and can further amazing stories. Luke and Leia will continue as supporting characters.

I think its a bit silly to take how an actor felt about a role 30 years ago and apply it to today. The truth is in The Making Star Wars books it was revealed that the real reason Ford wanted out of Star Wars is because he was a hot commodity and didnt want to get play cast. He wanted to try different roles. Not because he truly believed Han’s story line was over or stale.

There is zero reason to believe (in my opinion) that Ford isnt excited to be part of this trilogy. Now that doesnt discount the fact the man is 70.

If anyone should be killed off due to old age and concern about longevity, its Fisher. She treated her body like an amusement park most of her life including drug and alcohol addictions. She has more wear on her than Ford.

Finally let me say, that in the end I think your right. I think they will kill off Han. Mostly because it will add drama to the story and because his character makes the most sense. Leia can have a background role and noone will be upset. Luke dying would just piss off too many people; keeping all 3 around takes screen time away from the new cast, and ultimately its about the new people. So ridding the ST of Han makes the most sense.

There is only so much room in a film. Luke’s role is clear, Ben/Yoda. Leia is a general and mother. Han Solo as a supporting character, no way. Give him a great meaningful death before his son or daughter. Or something within the story.

Little bit of a crazy theory, but hear me out. It’s clear that Maz Kanata is referring to Rey’s eyes in this trailer, and everyone’s saying that this means that Rey is for sure Han and/or Leia’s daughter. I think that it *could* be possible, but Maz is talking about Rey having someone else’s eyes.

When it comes to the Skywalker Family Tree we can immediately eliminate Luke and Anakin eyes as theirs are blue, and Rey’s is brown.

Well, it looks like Han is the one who brings her to Maz, she obviously it must be him. Actually, no. Consider Han’s eyes in the poster compared to Rey’s eyes (Pictures will be posted if I can figure out how). Han’s eyes are brown, but far too light to be the same as Rey’s. Plus, how lame would it be for Maz to be all “I have seen your eyes before.” “Really?” “Yeah, on Solo. He’s standing right next to you.” Considering this facts, I don’t believe Rey has Han’s eyes.

The obviously Maz must be referring to Leia’s eyes. Yes, I could see Leia having passed down her eyes to her daughter Rey (though I am still hoping she’s Luke’s daughter). Setting aside the question of is Rey Luke or Leia’s daughter, I still don’t think Maz was saying she had seen Rey’s eyes in Leia before. You see the idea of Maz saying she’s been around long enough to see eyes in other people loses some effect when you say it was Leia, because Leia’s only in her 50s. This line seems to be significant, so it has to be someone who was around even longer ago.

Well, then who could Maz have seen before? How about the woman who first introduced dark brown eyes into the Skywalker Line?

I think it’s Padme that Maz has met before. Padme would be old enough to make the amount of time passed since their meeting significant, Maz does have all those prequel flags, and the reveal could be the big revelation that Rey is from the Skywalker family (because how could that not come up the second Rey and Han meet unless there was some big story about Rey getting lost as a child or something?)

Thin evidence for a weak theory, but hey, we need something to occupy our time until we get full answers.

No way Rey is the daughter of Han and Leia, Rey’s strong accent is not shared with them. That only leaves Luke. Unless she was conceived by the force like Anakin.

I am hoping she’s Luke’s daughter, but accents are an environmental thing, not genetic. In the international trailer Rey says she’s been waiting for her family. If it’s been long enough she could have developed an accent.

She has what they refer to as the aristocratic accent…that Leia and Padme had at times.

Luke does not have a British accent either. so you accent theory holds no water. We don’t know how long she’s been “waiting” on Jakku. Ones accent is environmental, not hereditary.

Maz may be talking about eyes in an abstract or symbolic sense, and not about actual eye color or shape

    • November 9, 2015 at 1:12 pm
      Permalink

I took the eye reference to be used in the more conventional sense: that she’s seen that ‘look’ in peoples eyes before. Referring to a character trait or personality, not in the literal sense that ‘you have the eyes of so-and-so’.
My guess on the prequel flags would be that they’re just an Easter-egg.
Still, at this stage there’s no reason why she couldn’t be referring to Padme.

Not proof, but when someone at Comic Con asked if there would be “any mention of Darth Plagueis” Abrams said he didn’t really want to get into aspects of story, “but I’m going to say: No.” Lawrence Kasdan (possibly in jest) didn’t even seem to have ever heard the name.

For some reason I hope we will still have questions left after Ep.7. Like; still not knowing who Rey or Finn are. I mean only in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ we found out Darth Vader was Luke’s father and thus Anakin Skywalker. And only in RotJ we learned Leia was Luke’s sister and as such shared the same father Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. Ep7 should not completely tell everyone’s story,.
