Kathleen Kennedy Is “Fully in Support” of Writers Participating in Strike

Kathleen Kennedy has come out and stated that those writers participating in the WGA Writers Strike have her full support.

Writers across Hollywood are striking for better pay, as many writers struggle to make ends meet on current salaries. It’s the first writers strike since 2008 and multiple projects have been affected by it — even Tony Gilroy has stepped away from the Andor set during filming, though writing had already been completed for that project.

Despite the problems that may cause problems for Lucasfilm though, Kathleen Kennedy is well in favor of writers “getting what they deserve” in terms of pay. Speaking at Cannes, she spoke in favor of resolving the strike in a way that satisfies both writers and their employers.

When it comes to acknowledging the importance of writing, I think everybody up here has demonstrated that you can’t do any of this without great writing. All of us who create anything…I am in full support and I know most people are in full support of the writers getting what they deserve.

I think what the meta issue is here is how is [what the writers want] being impacted by an industry that’s really changing, that is in the midst of change, both technologically and just the basic aspects of how we work. That’s going to take time. That’s what everyone is getting ready for. I think that we should take the time necessary to articulate what those feelings are.

Director James Mangold, who directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, expressed a similar appreciation for the writer’s importance when it comes to making movies.

“No movie happens without a great script, and no great script happens without writers. Writers are often – because they’re first in the process, they’re the first to be forgotten. So true in many parts of the business. I support them in their struggle for what is fair for everybody.”

Hopefully the dispute is resolved soon and writers get what they want.
