Jon Favreau: ‘The Mandalorian’ Is an Opportunity to Bring in All Elements and Eras of Star Wars
The Mandalorian might be new ground for Star Wars, being its first live-action streaming series for Disney+, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be rich with ties to the history of the franchise. In another nugget from his conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the writer/producer briefly talks about the opportunities the series presents when it comes to bridging different eras and elements of Star Wars.
Let me start by saying, I don’t read too much into the following quote and I think it will inadvertently create more wild speculation than it needs to, but nonetheless, when Jon Favreau speaks Star Wars, we’re going to cover it as best we can. EW asked Favreau if characters like Thrawn or a Legends character like Mara Jade could find their way into The Mandalorian, and Favreau gave the most professional and smart answer possible.
“I don’t want to talk about anything that might be fun for people to discover. We do have conversations. Part of what’s fun to see if we could merge the worlds of the original trilogy, the prequels, the sequels, The Clones Wars, and what’s been considered canon up to this point and what’s been considered part of Legends. I think this show offers an opportunity to bring in all those elements so no matter what your flavor of Star Wars ice cream you like there will be something to enjoy. But you’re asking the right questions.”
I personally think this is simply Favreau being a smart producer, and casting a wide net to garner interest in the series from the largest demographic possible. Now, having said that, this does offer plenty of interesting possibilities. I am sure we’ll see many Easter eggs from Lucasfilm animation (especially with Filoni’s involvement), the prequels, and of course the original trilogy and sequel trilogy (which the show takes place between), throughout the series. Beyond Easter eggs, the question remains, how much will we see from other eras (including nods to Legends)?
The good news is, we don’t have to wait long. The Mandalorian debuts on Disney+ two months from tomorrow on November 12. Regardless of how much or how little Favreau incorporates from the history of Star Wars, all indications are that we are in for something truly special.
