RUMOR: Which Episodes Each Director for Star Wars: The Mandalorian Will Handle

The Mandalorian
As revealed yesterday, the directors of The Mandalorian include Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi. But aside from the premiere, which has explicitly been confirmed by Lucasfilm to be directed by Filoni, which episodes of the Jon Favreau-produced series will they direct? One source may have the answers.

Making Star Wars has been on fire with news related to The Mandalorian, and though they didn’t know every director that would be involved with the project, they do now. Better yet, they have reportedly figured out which episodes will be directed by which of the pool of directors. Filoni, Famuyiwa, and Chow will do the heavy-lifting on the series with two episodes each, while Howard and Waititi will be handling single episodes. The full list of which director matches up with which episode can be seen below:

  • Episode I: Dave Filoni
  • Episode II: Rick Famuyiwa
  • Episode III: Deborah Chow
  • Episode IV: Bryce Dallas Howard
  • Episode V: Dave Filoni
  • Episode VI: Rick Famuyiwa
  • Episode VII: Deborah Chow
  • Episode VIII: Taika Waititi

MSW are sticking to their report that the show will be eight episodes in length and not ten as previously indicated elsewhere. Each episode will be written by Favreau, who surprisingly isn’t taking a shot at directing an episode himself; though, as the show’s producer, it seems like he’s going to be pretty hands-on with his work as filming goes from day to day.

I think something that’s understated about the strong lineup of directors that Lucasfilm have hired is that they represent a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, something that the current lineup of films has been accused of lacking. Waititi in particular has been a fairly prominent name since Thor: Ragnarok was released, and it will definitely be interesting to see him handle the season finale if this report is as on-point as the earlier reports from MSW. In any case, this is a big win for Lucasfilm in that it allows them to expand who gets to influence the shape of Star Wars going forward, and it presents the people involved with a shot at potentially directing a standalone Star Wars film at some point in the future.
