Disney Releases New SOLO Character Posters in Response to Plagiarism Claims

A new look for the Solo: A Star Wars Story character posters has been unveiled on the official Star Wars Brazil Facebook page. The original character posters came under fire by a French artist who claimed (and with merit) that the original designs were plagiarized from his work. These appear to be the new replacement versions of the character posters in response to that situation.

First, let’s take a look at them all, which were posted on the Star Wars Brazil Facebook page:

About a week and a half ago a story broke that had a French artist accusing Star Wars of ripping off his work to create the Solo character posters, and as you can see in the original report here, he clearly had a legitimate case. Disney responded that they would be looking into the situation:

“The posters were created by an outside vendor and it’s something we are currently looking into,” a spokesman for Disney told THR.

You can see the comparisons in the image above, and understand the artist’s gripe over the situation. It appears Disney has agreed the claims were valid and it looks like this new revised series of character posters is taking over! I personally think the new versions are better. While it may seem clear, it should be stressed that Lucasfilm story group has no involvement in the films’ marketing, this is purely a marketing based situation at Disney, that was evidently caused by a third party vendor.

It should be called, “Han Solo” in the US as well. Much better title.

Some one in the Disney marketing department, is (most likely) going to get fired over this.

They seem to be very forgiving over there, you can destroy a classic character and alienate half of the fanbase, and still have your job :p

Yeah, it’s like they want their filmmakers to make movies that take chances instead of shoveling an endless stream of predictable, derivative fan service to appease the fans who can’t accept change or anything new.

Mmmmmm……derivative fan service. That was my nickname in high school.

          Not really

Shut the front door! They got caught red handed stealing someone’s art work and their solution is to remove half of the the stolen elements and move forward with the other half? These should pass any legal challenge but why not jettison the posters altogether or at the very least do some color correction to avoid using the original artwork’s color pallet? There must have been other posters under consideration before the first set were chosen. They couldn’t just go with the second place design? Sorry, I’m a designer, this is amazing to me.

On a side note, I like these a lot more without the text mask. Except for the Han poster. That pose is lame. Get your blaster out, Han!

I like the color pallet. Its fitting for each of the characters.
Why should they change it ? Because someone else already used it ? So now no one can ever use that color pallet ? Maybe the same pallet was already used for something else before the “original” art (like toy money in monopoly or something)

Exactly what I said they should do.
There is no point buying what was already stolen and the original author made his money on those original works anyway.

Oh, really? So you steal a car and you get caught. You get to remove the spoiler and keep it? The manufacturer got paid for the car so the dealer you stole it from can take a hike, right?

They removed the weapons from every one of the characters. I’ve noticed this in international posters before.

I’m surprised this counts as plagiarism. Clearly the concept is the same but since all the details have changed I’d have thought it would be technically legal. Not a good move but legal

Personally, I think the original posters were better. But I can see how they were copied and needed to change. The new ones are fine, but the original ones had more character I think….

I thins it’s unfair and distasteful from Disney/Lucasfilm not to credit Joonas Suotamo as the actor behind Chewbacca, as they did with Alden, Donald and Emilia in their own character posters.
