Updated with the Results and the Winner. Happy Holidays from SWNN! ‘Jedi Challenges’ Giveaway and a New Star Wars Poll!

It’s that time of year again. The holidays have become a very special season for Star Wars fans in recent years. No longer just the season of Life Day, Star Wars has sewn itself into the fabric of yule in this new Disney era, as the season of decorated trees and festive music now is inextricably linked to new Star Wars releases.

So to all of you who now subtly slip some new John Williams tracks into their holiday playlists each year, to those who top their trees with Angels from the moons of Iego, and even to those who can’t do yule without one more round with Bea Arthur and her friends, we at SWNN wish you a very Happy Holidays.

To that end, we’d like to do a very merry giveaway for all of our loyal readers during this most wonderful time of the year. To those who have been living under a rock these past few weeks, there has been a bit of division in the fan community over the reception of The Last Jedi. So, in the spirit of the season, we’d like to turn those strong opinions into presents! Participate in the poll below by giving your ranking of the films in this new era of releases and be submitted to win a prize.

Whether you are an OT originalist, a PT preacher, an acolyte of the animated, or a sequel supremacist, we can all come together here to read about the franchise we love. And in this new era, the next release is just around the corner. So, there is always new news for us to bring for all types of fans.

This awesome prize is supplied by Lenovo UK. To find out more about this Augmented Reality Star Wars set go to their page jedichallenges.com

For a chance to win the ‘Jedi Challenges’ set, just vote in the three polls below and post a comment in our comments section in this article (we will contact the winner by the email used to post the comment).

Please be respectful to other people’s opinions and just have fun. We intentionally just included the new movies, so please let’s focus on this new Star Wars era.

If you are using a mobile device to vote please use the following landing pages:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poll

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Poll

The Poll will run for one week. We will announce the results next year. 🙂

From all of us at SWNN, Happy Life Day (as well as any other non-Wookiee holidays you may or may not celebrate at this time of year)!

UPDATE!

You can see the final poll results above. We’ve removed TLJ poll since one user lost several hours of his life trying to manipulate the poll and managed to vote more than 800 times giving the movie a zero rating. We know his IP so it was easy to calculate the final result for TLJ without the fake votes. Here they are:

0-3 – (32 votes)   – 2.8%

4 – (40 votes)   – 3.5%

5 – (90 votes)   – 7.9%

6 – (66 votes)   – 5.8%

7 – (99 votes)   – 8.7%

8 – (214 votes) – 18.9%

9 – (373 votes) – 33%

10 – (212 votes) – 19.4 %

So as you can see the majority of our readers, who are of course Star Wars fans and do not represent the whole world, have a very positive opinion about the new movies. For TFA 72% of our readers rate it with 8-10 out of 10. For Rogue One 79% of our readers rate it with 8-10 out of 10. For TLJ 71.3% of our readers rate it with 8-10 out of 10. It’s interesting that TLJ gets the most 10s out of the three movies.

And the winner from the comments section who gets the Jedi Challenges AR set is: Pete Wells

Agree except for VI, was not the best plot and not the best movie, let’s be honest (I like it a lot of course, but last ones are better than this one I think)

Voted…really struggled with it the first time….would have given it 4 out of 10. 2nd time 7 out of 10 then 3rd time 8.5….finally 4th viewing a solid 9….audience made a huge difference as first time was a premier every little thing was reacted to by fans…which I get, but missed a lot of dialogue. If you get a chance check it out in 4DX…2.5 hours on like a Star Tours ride. Best movie experience I have had in a long time….P.S….don’t expect to eat during a 4 DX showing.
    4, 5, 8, 3.5 (Rogue), 7, 3, 6, 2, 1, 2.5 (Clone Wars cartoon)
My kids loved it the two times they saw it..they are in love with the Porgs!

So, if you wish to rank any of these films with a 0, 1, 2, or 3 (oh heavens forbid), your vote only counts 1/4 as much as a 4-10?

There are 8 choices — they should be ranked 1-8 (or 0-7).

    Merry merry.

I’m surprised (and pleased) to see that so far TLJ has a good rating here.
Considering how fans reacted to episode V back in the days, I hope TLJ will get more love in the future, while heated minds start cooling down. 😀

A New Hope came out when I was 6, Empire when I was 9 and Jedi when I was 12, so nothing will ever beat them in my book just because of where I was in life when they came out.

Even though I didn’t like the prequels as much as the OT, I still cherish them as Star Wars. They’re essential to the saga and will get better with age, in my opinion.

Three films into the new era of Star Wars, I’m thrilled. TFA was, to me, the perfect reboot. RO was different, and to me a little disconnected, but I still loved it. Just not in the same way. And TLJ was just what SW needed to embark on new things, go in new directions, and show that the overall franchise can grow and stay fresh. I wish Luke didn’t become one with the force until 9, but I understand how they were going to have one of the big three go out in each ST movie, with Leia going last in 9. If Carrie Fisher had passed a little earlier (God forbid) and they had time to regroup and have her character pass in 8, I’d bet money Luke would have stuck around for 9. Regardless, my whole family loved TLJ best of the three new films.

Long live Star Wars, and may the Force be with us!

It still bothers me this site (which I love since its inception when Episode 7 was announced) has frankly ignored the backlash on the main page. The 2nd weekend 72% drop in box office is a huge story and nothing here, considering there were previous articles when the movie hit certain big box office numbers the first weekend.

My side is not saying everyone hated this movie as I think the fanbase is split down the middle. But if you came here you would have no idea as it goes deeper then whiny fanboys which was the narrative among critics. The numbers don’t lie and it feels like this website is towing the company line.

I gave TLJ a 6… because I acknowledge that even though I didn’t like it. It wasn’t the worst movie ever. Giving it a zero seems ridiculous to me. Poe’s arc, the mind bridge, Carrie’s acting and Yoda’s words. Those were all pretty awesome. That puts it above the prequels IMO.

Now for the curiosity that is the Solo movie…

Ah, finally a voting pool here, not twitter etc and open for longer than 24h.

Gived E8 an 0. If i would judge it as a sandalone sci-fi not connected to SW, it would be 4 maybe. But as a SW movie it has 0 from me.
E7 got a 4, if the only replaced the insane stupidity named Starkiller base with something like galaxy gun or something else explainable within the SW boundaries it would be a decent SW movie (except ctrl+c & ctrl+v of E4 which did not bothered me that very much)
R1 is the only good movie produced by Disney – why the hell this movie was not allowed to be 2.5h long instead of the shitty E8. I miss the Bistan happy laugh from U-wing scene for example.

Yes there is a few things I didn’t care for but the imagery and the character development far overshadowed the bad parts of the movie. Ep. 7 look much better today after the Ep. 8. One plays it too safe, the other confuses bold new story telling with copying old stories and adding twists that don’t really take the story to new places. Luke, Leia, and Han were not the correction of Kenobi, Yoda, and Maces failures. They are the continuation of those failures. 7 builds the legend of a great hero, but hides him, 8 then decides there are no heroes of old, just failures that can be used to learn from.

I would love to see a pole rating everyone’s rankings on all the film’s thus far. I know there are so many different opinions out there between fans and would be very interesting to see an aggregate ranking.
Mine for example I don’t think too many would agree with.
    In 9th- AOTC
    8- TPM
    7-ROTS
    6-ANH
    5-ROTJ
    4-TFA
    3-TLJ
    2-ESB

      8. TPM

I honestly can’t rate TLJ right now as I just don’t know how I feel about it. It took me about 6 times seeing TFA (theater and Bluray) to really have definite idea where to rank it.

Aggregate ranking, you say? As it happens, I have a big spreadsheet in which I collect Star Wars poll results for fun.

At present, with five major polls (that I know of) ranking all the films prior to TLJ, aimed at different audiences, the aggregate ranking is:

      1. ESB (1.2)
      2. TFA (3.2)
      3. ANH (3.4)
      4. R1 (4.0)
      5. ROTJ (4.4)
      6. ROTS (5.0)
      7. TPM (6.8)
      8. AOTC (7.2)

Numbers in parentheses are the film’s average ranking.

    A merry christmas and a safe 2018.
I have seen TLJ twice with more to come. I walked out the first time a bit unsure (still liked it but maybe 60/40) as i read to much and then expected a few things.
I went back with my daughters and watching the movie with no expectations loved it. Apart from a couple of little things. But i recall even ESB originally got bad feedback cause it was not the fun of ANH. But TLJ does what a middle chapter is supposed to do, it throws away all hope and especially losing Luke he was the greatest hope and who will rise to the challenge.
But what made me fall in love with Star Wars again was my daughter who actually like SW hearing her ooooh ad aaargh and cheer when our heros escaped, this not only showed me this is thier generation of movies but SW is something to enjoy for what it is and escape to a galaxy far far away.
I also think a poll with the order mine is… low to high

    AOTC
    TPM
    ROTJ
    R1
    ROTS
    TFA
    ANH
    TLJ
    ESB

PEACE and please stop bashing someones vision and other peoples love of something that resinates through us all.
We all have different visions and these films are made for all not people who only like the OT.

    Ps

    TFA 8
    R1 7
    TLJ 9

I agree with you that a film should not be judged on box office. In fact, I think this film will get a better assessment from both sides when it comes to Bluray. There is too much hyperbole on both sides right as the words ‘masterpiece’ and ‘garbage’ are getting thrown around in too many opinions.

My point is a lot of fans I know personally really hate this movie and they saw TFA, R1, PT movies multiple times in the theaters and not gone back a second time for TLJ, so that is driving a lot of the big drop in the 2nd week. Again, I’m not saying that the movie is a flop but it’s odd that many in the media are just dismissing any backlash?

I will say I disagree with you on TLJ being a character driven movie, as I love those types of movies. When you have a whole Rose/Finn subplot that goes on and on and takes away good character scenes between Rey, Luke, Snoke and Kylo, that’s what frustrates me. Daisy Ridley is wasted in this movie as she really resonated with the fanbase in TFA.

As I said, I think the debates will be better when this comes to Bluray and fans can sit back in their home and soak it in. I expect we will meet somewhere in the middle. One side will admit is wasn’t as great as they thought and the other side will admit it wasn’t as bad as they thought.

    • December 26, 2017 at 12:52 pm
      Permalink

Yeah I’d agree with your overall assessment. It will even out somewhere in the middle. I don’t really understand the hate for this film, but I get it, because I kinda love it, but realise that it’s not perfect by any stretch.

I’m really OK with this going down as the black sheep of the Star Wars saga. With 9 films, it’s actually more interesting to have a hotly debated episode, especially when it’s going to be bookended by 2 of the most popular, rousing and crowd pleasing entries – I predict Ep. 9 is gonna be all heart, action and resolution.

Anyway, Happy Holidays and hope we can all enjoy aspects of this film and enjoy talking about it at least.

      – oh and as far as ‘character driven’, I simply mean it is more of an exploration of the characters motivations than TFA – it’s not a classical character study by any means. I think one of the reasons the Canto Bight and Holdo stuff is so divisive is that they feel like plot contrivances created solely to communicate character growth and themes. That is up for debate as to how much of a sin this is… I don’t really mind it cause the prequels were full of that kinda thing.

And I love that we have had a new SW movie these past 3 holiday seasons!

Not the poll. Every page of SWNN calls a script that makes multiple fingerprinting attempts. (It creates hidden graphics using the Canvas tag that will vary according to the user’s browser, OS, video card, fonts, etc., and then reads the hidden canvas rendering to “fingerprint” and track the user.) There is literally no purpose for this other than to spy on web browsing habits and history.

I just watched The Last Jedi for the 3rd time (and on Christmas day too!) and i have to say…. this 3rd viewing was my most FAVORITE! I like the Last Jedi more than my first viewing. It is so different, but damn is it fun.

    1. I still don’t like the fathier scene (although i do like fathiers)
    2. I still wish Leia had sacrificed herself for the Resistance/Rebels instead of Holdo (what a perfect way to go out)

but it got better with the third viewing. Really enjoyed it :)I wish i had felt this way coming out of the first viewing lol

    voted! 🙂

There is one thing I find remarkable about the TLJ poll. Many people seem to rank it 9-10 or 0-3. I believe many of those votes are in defiance to the other group, the “haters” or “lovers” of the film, and the truth lies somewhere in between. I bet that the vote would look different in a year from now, with TLJ being the “worst” of all three movies and a huge bump in the 7 range. I believe the “haters” will then have started to view the film more positive, and the “lovers” more negative. Just my take on this.

It had Darth Vader killing Rebels in a hallway. Fanboys drool over that shit. It doesn’t matter if Rogue One’s characters were dull and forgettable or if the story wasn’t that compelling. The familiar Star Wars eye candy is enough to make them love it.

Rogue one=7 Loved the 3rd act but thought character development was on the weak side, still very enjoyable.
TLJ=9 My favorite movie since ROTJ and empire. I love the fact that Star Wars can evolve and not be stuck in the 1970’s. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire movie.

Interesting to note how vocal those who say that TLJ is shit are…

Personally I think it’s the best of the disney’s era movies. However, I really hope that in IX they’ll give some more background to Rey’s incredible power and to snoke.

    • December 26, 2017 at 5:43 pm
      Permalink

I didn’t think the TLJ was shit. Just didn’t like it as much as the others and only gave it a 6. The reason you’ve put is why I’m no longer looking forward to IX. No need for a background on Snoke, he’s dead so no point. Also there’s no reason Rey is so powerful, her parents are nobody’s. She’s that powerful because they want to say that anybody can be that powerful and the rematch between her and Kylo is a for gone conclusion.

Just like Anakin was a nobody but uber powerful, so hardly less valid a plot point for Rey. For that reason though, I had hoped she had known parents, even if it was Obi Wan.

Valid point however Anakin was created by the force so there was that reason for him being so powerful. Not that I liked that idea but at least it’s a reason. I think Rey should have had some relevance to her great power.

No I didn’t either. Her parents are nobodies just wasn’t at all satisfying even though RJ kept saying we would find the answer satisfying! I hated it when some people kept saying Reys a Mary Sue but, giving her such skill & power with zero training makes no sense whatsoever and plays into those idiots hands. Even Anakin & Luke had a lot of training and you can’t say she had any training in TLJ either, certainly nothing close to what they got. I just hope JJ ignores RJ and somehow changes it.

My comment was more about those with the “omg it ruined star wars” mentality.

I still think those are two questions worth answering. About Snoke, it is still related to Ben Solo turning to the dark side. So possibly it’s relevant for his motivations (let alone for explaining how the galaxy went to shit after ROTJ)

About Rey… It’s not only about being powerful. I mean, how can you imagine that you can control another person’s mind (the stormtrooper who was surveilling her in TFA) if you have never seen someone else doing it? It makes absolutely zero sense, and “she’s powerful” doesn’t explain it. Did she saw it in Kylo ren’s mind? did she have previous training which was “awakened”?

It’s possible you may be disappointed with IX then. They’ve already said Reys parents are nobodies and Snoke is dead and gone. There’s too much else to set up in IX to revisit anything to do with these two issues. Like explaining the rise of a new rebellion/resistance. Making them interesting enough in one movie so that when they beat the first order we actually care. What happens to Leia between the movies and how Rey even begins to train new jedi with no training herself! It’s a lot to squeeze in one movie!

It was least creative if you search for iconic themes, but I think as a whole is really good one! Few things to “take a look” in my opinion:
-John Williams use to do something I love: some of the big characters or situations that has their own music theme are follow by a secondary theme (good example is Kylo Ren, you have the huge horn solo, but also a little theme with the brass section that it’s really expressive and in this movie he uses amazingly.)
-The non tematic battle scenes: he is just great doing it, and musically I found it even more interesting than the big themes.
-Also lovely for me the Ach-To/Luke Skywalker music, really powerful.
-The new Rose an Finn theme has some Harry Potter magic touch that give some fresh air.
-I do miss a bit a more “square” theme for the First Order, a march or a fanfarre. I think Giachino made a pretty good job with the Krennic/Imperial march on R1.
-The use of the Force Awakanes themes together with the OT give it a spectacular taste (although that is not as creative)

I really enjoyed TLJ (especially the second time when I was able to let go of my emotional baggage), but I definitely think it was too long which is something I never thought I’d say about a Star Wars movie. I understand Finn needed something to do in the movie, but that whole sub plot seemed completely unnecessary. And as much as I may have wished for Luke to be different, more heroic, Mark Hamill was born to play crazy old Luke.

Why does it matter what another person thinks of something you enjoy?

We are all different and entitled to our own opinions and preferences, so as long as you enjoy it that is all that matters. On the other side of the coin, why should it matter that someone enjoys something you do not?

I love every single Star Wars film at the same time as seeing all of the things which don’t sit right with me. I didn’t make them, they were created by somebody infinitely more talented than I am. It is their vision telling the story they wanted to tell.

We as fans do not own the franchise, we are emotionally invested in it yes, but our only input is to enjoy it or not. The minute it is no longer fun then that is the time to walk away.

If you feel the need to abuse the director or any of the cast/crew because you feel that strongly, then that is a reflection on you personally more than what was created.

Well that got away from me a bit, I’ll leave it there 🙂

Maybe the whole TLJ following directly after the TFA kinder messed things up for some (not all). If you leave a gap then you can fill in the blanks with your own story. For example Leia and Han’s romance seemed natural as I assumed they’d been on hoth a while. Rey’s uber Jedi skills in the space of a few days was hard to swallow(for me).

So far, I’m loving that we have new Star Wars movies, period. I’m excited for Solo; Howard will do SW great.

The last jedi was a great movie with some mistakes, but with some of the best moments in star wars

R1 is my favorite of the new era. TLJ has some great moments and some I wish they’d have done much differently. TFA was good but just too much like ANH for my liking.

Rogue One is the best of the 3 IMO.

I love Rogue One, but it’s kind of a chore to sit through first 2/3rds of the film.

Would also agree, but only just – felt it had a great vibe of oppression of the Empire, and the atmosphere was just terrific. Out of 100 rated it 96, with TLJ on 95 – I thought it was fresh only real quibbles were Canto Bite didn’t work as well as the rest of the film, and the chase sequence with the star destroyers and the republic cruiser felt a bit contrived otherwise the rest of the film was just fantastic. TFA felt a too on the nose derivation of a New Hope, and that Leia, Finn and Rey characters didn’t work as well as I had expected, in fact the real stars were Han, Chewie, BB8 and Kylo Ren. The whole Starkiller base thing was also a rather crass rendition of ‘Nasty Weapon of the baddies that has to be worse than the death star’ therefore TFA scores 78 out of 100 from me

Lol….SWNN…..you poll has been ‘hacked’ at the last minute. You should throw out the last minute hater votes. It’s very obvious shenanigans happened for TLJ.

Does look like it. Up to two days ago, I had noticed the number of people voting for these movies was broadly the same. now suddenly TLJ has more than twice the number of votes as the other two movies, and they are all at the bottom of the scale. Mmmmmh…..

I saw on a SWNN twitter post that some Australian guy somehow input 700 bogus zero votes. They know his IP and will not count those votes when the poll closes.

After 14 days US Domestic Take
    TFA = $652m, Jurassic World = $446m, Avengers =$402m, Titanic=$124m, Avatar= $283m, R1 = $375m TLJ=$517m. So must be a terrible movie and a flop. Mmmmh….

    In my opinion…
R1 – The War room conversation sucked but the film added genuine depth to the OT, the final battle nailed it- 9
TFA – A bigger death star movie, but still fun – 7
TLJ – Waste of Luke. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought “do you know what I want, Luke to remote in, do some shadow boxing then disappear”. Super Leia, clunky plot, that shit bit when they goofed around in Las Vegas and plenty of other moments. That said there were some amazing scenes – 6

Not watching Solo at the cinema in dirty protest (no more free cash), or at least wait for the user reviews. Critics are on one as proven by this poll (pending a re-count) and various other scores such as Rot Tom.

As I said…it’s all my opinion, if you love TLJ then I’m jealous.

so i think at this point it is a valid argument to say, that the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is not very “honest” 😉

Totally agree. If one person voted over 800 times to tank a poll on a fan site, imagine what’s going on at a site that gets much more traffic. That person has probably voted on RT 5x as much as he/she did on this poll.

What I think R1 has done better than all the other movies is make the Galaxy feel like people live in it. The Ring of whatever and Jedda City were well realized (in my opinion) with tons of extras and intersting details…and limited CGI to take you out of the moment. I wish Gareth spent more time in Coruscant during the Erso flashbacks, just so we could see his vision of the city.

    Congrats Pete.
I have a question for the moderators:

How do you select for a winner in these competitions?

Do you draw names out of a hat on little slips of paper?
    Paper rock scissors?
    Random number generator?
    Draw straws?
    Cast lots?
    Cock fighting?
Tournament style? If so, is there a loser’s bracket?

    Just curious.
