Disney to Pull Movies From Netflix and Start Own Streaming Service

Disney announced during its quarterly earnings call with investors today that they will be making a dynamic shift in their strategy for streaming content.  According to THR, it is unknown at this time how this will impact Star Wars content, but it could potentially put future releases via Netflix in some jeopardy.

Bob Iger today announced a $1.58 billion deal to purchase BAMTech.  BAMTech is a streaming technology company that is currently owned by Major League Baseball.  The purchase is being made to help Disney build out the technology for two separate but related new endeavors.  First, Disney will be launching a streaming option for ESPN that looks to offer an additional 10,000 sporting events over what ESPN currently makes available.  The ESPN service is expected in 2018.  The second endeavor, and the one more potentially relevant to Star Wars fans, is a Disney movie streaming service that will be launched in 2019.

More and more content creators are moving towards providing their own streaming content rather than relying on outside companies to provide that service.  Disney would appear to be following suit, as Iger specified that Disney and Pixar releases beginning with their 2019 slate would be exclusive to this new service.  Iger did not, however, provide details on the company’s very popular Marvel and Lucasfilm offerings.  As of now, it is unclear when or if Star Wars may leave Netflix and move to this exclusive service, but it is clear that we should make no assumptions going forward about the streaming availability of new Star Wars releases as they come.

What had just a short time ago seemed like a major exclusive streaming arrangement with Netflix has evaporated very quickly, so what next week or next year holds for Star Wars would seem to be in doubt.  One would assume that any existing deals will remain intact, so we may not see immediate removals of any of the films.  But, it seems likely something will happen eventually.  We Star Wars fans know we’ll shell out money over and over and over again for new versions, double dips, and new formats.  I’m sure it is only a matter of time until Disney decides to take advantage of our obsession.

We’ll update you as any new information or additional detail is released.

Hey women are taking my precious Star Wars, I’ve always had idea that Star Wars has more men in it.

SJWs and people who are moaning about them are the same to me. Find a new thing to care about.

Hopefully original Star Wars content doesn’t end up behind a paywall. I’m not giving CBS money to watch Star Trek but Star Wars is another matter.

On a side note, it would be nice if half of those 10,000 sporting events are MLB games for a low monthly fee.

Anyone know how this is going to affect the Netflix Marvel series like Daredevil, etc?

Great. I was hoping to subscribe to yet another streaming service. At least cable has one cord to cut. This is becoming an endlesss collection of recurring monthly charges.

It’s not hard to find programming for free. I can’t possibly be the only person who watched Sunday’s Game Of Thrones before Sunday because I’m comfortable with it. I love Netflix and happily subscribe to it, but I am not adding other services. Netflix is literally the only provider I pay; no cable. And I only do that for my wife and daughter who both loathe my… ahem, alternative sites, because it lacks the ease of use. lol

I’m sadly with you on this. I was getting better quality and speed chrome-casting from ‘alternative sites’ than I was getting from Hulu, legally, so I cut Hulu because that’s just ridiculous. I’m on a free trial for Netflix this month.

I won’t subscribe to this like I won’t subscribe to CBS’s streaming service for Star Trek Discovery. I WILL still be watching Discovery regardless. I don’t subscribe to AMC or HBO but I still watch Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Like Ian Malcolm said – life finds a way.

Thankfully, in Canada we’re not getting Discovery on a network-exclusive streaming service. I’ll gladly subscribe to another Netflix-type service as long as it expands my overall options.

Totally fine with subbing to a Disney-specific service as long as they pack it TO THE BRIM. Disney has almost a century worth of content, from cartoon shorts to original TV programs to movies both theatrical and not. Other services can go fuck themselves if they think I’m willing to shell out another $10/mo for ten items on their limited list. Disney at least has the biggest catalog of their own.

Also, if this means bringing the Lucasfilm library over to it, I’m even happier. The Indi trilogy and American Graffiti had better make it. (Though now that I think about it, AG might be owned by Universal still…)

And that’s why pirating is still so popular in the year 2017. I’ll pay for Netflix. I’ll pay for HBO. I might even pay for Crunchyroll. I REFUSE to pay for anything else, and I mean it.
