UPDATE!

Entertainment Weekly posted an extensive interview with Executive Producer Dave Filoni, discussing the newly released trailer. You can read the full piece HERE.

Here are some of the most interesting highlights from the interview:

  • The crossguard lightsaber Ezra finds is a nod to this new history we’re seeing in The Force Awakens. It gives a little more context to something that turns up later.
  • By that time Leia is not a Rebel. She is part of the Empire and her father is still working within the Senate.
  • Vader and The Emperor think that if they can get Ahsoka, she would be a key that leads them to other Jedi survivors.
  • Matt Lanter, who voiced Anakin in The Clone Wars series, got to make his return as the voice Ahsoka hears in her head, although James Earl Jones is supplying the ominous exterior voice of Vader.
  • “The voice of this mysterious character — who warns that Ezra is susceptible to the Dark Side — sounds a lot like a certain Supreme Leader we saw in The Force Awakens. But Filoni won’t say who the actor is, and he seems to enjoy the connections fans may make — legit or not. Filoni says he’s unlikely to resolve any major secrets from the films — just as he wouldn’t want the movies to tie up any loose ends involving the characters from his shows.” So this is probably not Snoke…
  • “Filoni will say that these masked figures are Jedi Temple Guards, who turned up in The Clone Wars series. In Season 2 of Rebels, they battle not just our Rebel friends, but also the Dark Side Inquisitors, so their precise loyalty is in question”.
  • Sabine Wren will meet up with two more unnamed Mandalorians in upcoming episodes.

Definitely Maul! Sadly that could cancel the Obiwan spin off movie. I wanna see Maul Vs Obi one the big screen. But as good as this show is I’m happy either way. This trailer was absolutely amazing! And Yoda is voiced by Frank Oz again, not sure if that was Jones doing Vader tho. Cant wait for all the Sith backstories.

It seriously brings tears to my eyes to see some of this stuff on screen. When they put that Interdictor in the first half of the season I almost lost my mind. That’s my childhood: playing TIE Fighter every day in Summer and telling my mom I’m sick so that I can stay home and play it some more. All of these guys are huge EU fans, so it makes sense that they’re going to bring stuff in. I love it. Let it flow, Filoni. Let it flow.

Kennedy, Filoni, Hidalgo, and even JJ have mentioned numerous times that they wouldn’t hesitate to cherry pick and bring back characters, objects, places, or even story points from the old EU when it suits the new stories/films/books going forward.

EDIT: Even Luceno and Foster have backdoored some “Legends” stuff back into cannon, with the “Tarkin” and “TFA” novels.

That’s because it is. Snoke has completely black eyes, from the sclera, the limbus, and the cornea. Darth Maul does not. Snoke does not have facial tattoos. Darth Maul does.

Aren’t Snoke’s eyes blue, though? They mention giving him pale, blue eyes in The Art of TFA, and I recall them being that color in the actual film.

Hard to tell until we get some high-res pictures of Snoke.

Regardless, that’s definitely Maul. The facial tattoos are identical.

They are listed as being “pale blue” upon actually looking it up, but I couldn’t tell from the lighting. The ultimate point is that his eyes are very, very dark as opposed to colorful.

Hey man Im glad that you like him but I think he is kind of a terrible character. He was kind of used as a faceless antagonist in TPM and then they inexplicably brought him back in TCW. Again I am in the minority but I kind of hate him

I think he was criminally underutilized by Lucas. He could have and should have been the main antagonist of the PT (besides the Emperor, of course). I didn’t agree with resurrecting him, either, but now that he’s here, might as well use him.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed TFA but I feel like it was a little light on lore, and don’t get started on the familiar feeling TFA had lol (though I’m sure that next two SW episodic films will delve more into lore). Rebels on the other hand (at least from this 1st impression from the trailer), is looking like it will get into it.

  • January 15, 2016 at 9:34 pm

Interesting – the pull to the dark is a direct contrast to Kylo Ren, and “there’s always truth in Legends” really solidifies the Plagueis idea, for me. There’s not a lot of the EU from this timeline that would make sense to re-canonize. But Plagueis makes sense because he is so heavily theorized for TFA, and the rest of this season has a bunch of TFA stuff.

Plus, Rebels is the perfect venue for explaining the less imporant exposition of the Plagueis theory.

    • January 15, 2016 at 9:50 pm
      Permalink

Maybe. Though that’s Maul in the trailer, not Snoke. I disagree about the EU, though. There is TONS of stuff that makes sense to include:
      1. Technology (which it looks like they’re doing with the Quasar Fire-class cruiser and the Hammerhead ships)
      2. Characters (Mara Jade as an inquisitor anyone, Talon Karrde, Thrawn, etc.?)
      3. Locations

      • January 15, 2016 at 9:58 pm
        Permalink

Yeah, but at the same time, is a Quasar cruiser really such a big deal that you open a trailer with that quote? I think there’s more to it than that.

But after further consideration, I do agree – there’s a lot of stuff they could pull from Legends. But with the TFA focus, something related to Snoke makes a lot of sense, and so does the Plagueis theory. ^^

And am I the only one who thinks that could be an early version of Starkiller Base?

Imagine it: The Empire wouldn’t dare test an unstable prototype of the weapon on the actual Death Star. So they put it on a planet and fire. It works, so they make one for the Death Star.

NOW, thirty years later, the First Order can’t exactly afford an entire battle station. So they go into the Imperial archives, as mentioned by Kylo Ren, and learn of the prototype weapon. They go to the planet, embellish the pre-existing weapon, and call it Starkiller Base.

And yeah I know it’s not snowing on the Rebels planet. But in a few months it won’t be snowing on Earth, either.

Why is it sad? The idea that he has a special weapon created by an accident is a lot better than having a normal one. I thought that was brilliant from JJ. But I guess he was supposed to build a normal but cant even follow an instruction guide. Do you think thats a good idea? Making a totally incompetent villain?

Well, he put the pieces together just fine apparently, as his saber has proven quite effective. So what if he utilized a cracked crystal in it’s construction…he’s hella Punk like that. 😉

And as far as we know so far, according to the film and novel/script…he helped destroy the students of what would become a new Jedi order. For all we know, up until Rey, he may have not have ever had a single decent fight with anyone with a modicum of his skills.

And we don’t yet know ANYTHING about the Knights of Ren…they too could be a bunch of posers at this point.

This was always the point of Kylo Ren, things that we’ve all been privy too for months now. Don’t let your own speculation write a script that was never there. Far too many people get caught up in that.
At least now we have an INTERESTING villain, who we can see grow into something far more menacing, instead of a simple, one-note mustache-twirling James Bond villain.

Well, that’s also an assumption. For all we know at this point, Luke got instructions during his communes with Obi-Wan, and Yoda.

Also, that cracked crystal may prove to be an Easter Egg of sorts, a la Vader’s lightsaber being found by the Acolytes of the Dark in the Aftermath Novel.

Im a physicist. And belive it or not Star Wars kinda inspired me to this profession. As a kid I was mesmerised by the spaceships and At-at walkers. And even tho I was very dissapointed by the prequels (sorry George) I still follow this franchise. And will continue to do so till they ruin it beyond reparation.

That’s fair enough, but on the other side of the coin, I quite enjoy that Kylo is described as a “Sith Fetishist”, “Inexperienced”, and “Unstable”. This was portrayed to a T in the film, and even more so in the novel/script. But he really should’t be ruined for you, as he was portrayed exactly how he was meant to be all along – it’s us fans, and our speculation that built him up into something he was never meant to be…yet.

We’ve got two more films with him to grow as a character, which is downright exciting. FINALLY! A villain that grows into something really menacing.

But anyways, I hope you get the time to discover some of the new canon, as it’s quite good for the most part. Have a good day!

There’s huge story telling potential with all the main characters at this point and if you let something as minute as the origins of his lightsaber ruin the rest of his character arc then that is very much your loss.

Yes. They actually used the original designs from 77 as the basis. That’s how Filoni knew that a TIE can actually hold 3 people inside.

Filoni doesn’t just make this stuff up; he actually has been using a TON of recycled and long forgotten original SW designs for Rebels. He’s got direct access to this stuff…hence why one of the Inquisitors was an early design of Snoke.

I don’t think it is Maul. I theorize its an older Sith Lord that created the holocron. I suspect the facial tattoos that Maul had were something common to the Sith of old… in this new era of canon.

No. They’re common to Zabraks like Savage Opress and others. The ones that Maul have are a pattern unique to him, so he is the only possible candidate for “the Old Master”. plus, it’s clearly the same voice actor.

    – 2:14 Sith Holocron as portrayed in SWTOR
    – Planet Korriban (same color, and asteroid field as portrayed in the “The Return” trailer for Swtor, and in the game itself)

Don’t try to rationalize this BS just because you like the characters. They weren’t part of the rebel alliance, there were no other Jedi in the OT. They need to die if it’s to fit together cohesively with the original films. Otherwise they are asking their audience to resort to some serious cognitive dissonance, period.

Old Eu done that too and on much longer scale there was dozens of Jedi some of them Jedi masters. I dont see reason why cant Rebels little stretch one line of the originals.

          • January 23, 2016 at 8:43 pm
            Permalink

The post-ROTJ jedi in the EU were sought out and trained by Luke – he developed a way to confirm force sensitivity in others, and would take them and train them. Their progress to higher force powers, even being Masters in some cases, was because of Luke – so the idea that Luke was of central importance, as Yoda had said, was never violated.
I am not against filling in the content between movies, but it needs to be done with careful consideration to what has gone before, not just creating some new person or idea because it is cool or interesting.

I’d say if any of the Force sensitives survive… it’ll probably be like Ahsoka. They leave the life of Jedi behind. Disappear into obscurity. It’s about the only excuse I could think of that would fit… I don’t ever seen any of them interacting with Luke post ROTJ though.

No. When they started this “show for kids” they knew exactly they were playing at, adding Jedis in this time period. If they are honest they should kill them all. Yoda is talking to Ezra, right? He knows he exists. He can’t be lying in Empire when saying that “the last of the jedi you are”.

Snoke was around during the OT, wasn’t he ? Yet, he was never mentioned by Yoda or the Emperor. It is not totally impossible that there are other force-sensitives in hiding e.g. in the Unknown Regions or somewhere else out of the reach of the Empire and the Rebellion.

Since Yoda appears to have a connection with Ezra, he would know though if Ezra went into seclusion for some reason. It remains a mystery why Yoda would conceal that information from Luke, but I bet that will be explained in the TV series.

Are we really doing this again (discounting GL’s contributions of the TCW TV series)?

Yes, we all know that the TCW movie wasn’t that great, and that in reality it should’ve just been a multi-episode TV-only thing (or a full-length TV movie feature) & not have it premier as a feature film in theaters, but come on, the show improved in ideas, story, and characters as it went on and many of the the ideas and stories throughout the series came from GL; furthermore, a large part of the success that the show accomplished, especially as the series progressed, was due to GL’s contributions.

For what it’s worth, I’d like to see his ideas (at least the good ones) used in the new trilogy rather than the boring direction Disney is going in but TCW clearly got better as he stepped away which is no different from the OT. Lucas was born to be a producer not a writer or director. That’s where all his talents lie, He’s not very good with dialogue or direction but he’s awesome at world building.

If it wasn’t for Lucas also taking Filoni as his prodigee we’d have none of this. Is it really logical to say that because someone chooses to make the tv episodes a feature film, that immediately makes it crap? Because I’ve seen a handful that have been perfectly fine. Everyone wasn’t to blame george for this and that. You go try being creative and make something. Figure out what the real issues are. Then think about how you’d feel if you knew exactly why things went wrong but people just choose to put it on you since you were player 1. Cmon.

The statement is this: “George Lucas decided to take three episodes and make them a movie, while all along the actual content producers were preparing them as episodes of a long running television show. That ‘movie’ turned out to be bad, therefore it is likely a bad decision.”

The only blame for the movie being bad is George Lucas. He took something that wasn’t going to be a movie, and declared it to be released as a movie. That was stupid. We shouldn’t blame Filoni on that, he was developing those episodes as episodes, and its stated that they weren’t even ready yet.

No, I’m not too excited, I’m just happy and hopeful about it. Also, The Force Awakens already confirmed they’re are willing to take many things from the EU and twist them into their own versions of it. Kylo-Caedus, Rey-Jaina, Luke-…well, Luke etc.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see Kylo and Rey as interchangeable with the Solo twins. They’re a boy and a girl Force user, the dude went Dark side, one isn’t even a Solo. But whatever. If you REALLY want to believe this is a tribute to eliminated content that was mostly trash, by all means, enjoy.

The line clearly means something lol. That should be evident just from seeing the hammer head cruisers. There’s always a “bit” of truth pretty much implies that a few things will be handpicked from the old. How much is the question but I think its fair to say its not going to be a lot. Just whatever they think would work in context of what they’re currently building for us.

Filoni has always been a big fan of KOTOR. He’s stated it before. He tried very hard to get Revan into the Clone Wars, and at least got Lucas to bring in Bane and Korriban (of course George had to rename it so it was his).

The line is dialogue that is referencing something going on in the episode it’s spoken in. Ya’ll just gettin’ way excited because a marketing team made a good decision in assuming fans would find a connection with the KOTOR-elements highlighted in the trailer and the word LEGENDS.

          Just saying.

I thought the whole point of the cross-guard was to vent unstable material – so how can you have a “stable” one?

This show looks epic, Yoda however, looks like shit. CW did a better rendition imo.

In case you haven’t noticed over the past 2 seasons. Different shows. Different animation style. In context, yoda looks fine. Out of context when comparing to other incarnations probably not. Calm your tits and be glad you’re getting the show.

I’m aware of the differences, that said, he really does look like a blob of play-doh here.

I’ve watched this trailer over a dozen times now. WOW! The way Anakin sounds when he says “Ahsoka why did leave? Do you know what I’ve become?” really nailed it for me. It almost sounds like he blames her for not being there for him when he turned dark.
It’s looking like Ahsoka will meet her fate and Ezra will go dark. They’ve been hinting at Ezra going down that path. Also as others have mentioned I don’t see Ahsoka, Kanan, or Ezra surviving after the end of the series. Can they without messing up the OT universe? While I’m predicting I say Rex don’t make it through the rest of this season. Just a hunch.

The show really needs to be an hour long. I’ve been saying that from day one.
