‘The Acolyte’ Lead Amandla Stenberg Says Lucasfilm Had Them in Mind for the Show

Amandla Stenberg is on a roll right now. After appearing in Bodies Bodies Bodies and having the third best per-theater-average opening weekend of the year, Stenberg is traveling to a galaxy far, far away this fall, aboard a ship piloted by Leslye Headland. This is The Acolyte, the first live-action show to take place in a pre-Phantom Menace time.

Stenberg’s involvement in the show was reported late last year, but it wasn’t officially confirmed by Lucasfilm until San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Now, speaking to The Face magazine, the actor revealed that the studio approached them to play the role after they had already created concept art with them in mind. Stenberg said:

“The Lucasfilm team came to me with this project which was fully conceptualized with me in mind, and I was astounded.”

According to the magazine, the actor has already picked up kung-fu lessons to prepare for the role and will soon move to the U.K., where the series will be shot this fall. And they could not be more excited about it:

“I get to read, watch and breathe Star Wars. It’s my job to get lost in it, I’m so lucky. My plans were interrupted by a very different life path, but one that I think is going to be a huge blessing.”

No additional casting details are known about The Acolyte, but pre-production must be already underway so we might be hearing more details in the coming weeks. Since the series didn’t really have a presence at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm could be planning for a short presentation during the panel they share with Marvel Studios at the upcoming D23 Expo. It will take place on September 10.

The Acolyte will most likely release at some point in 2024.
