‘Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi’ Limited Animated Series Officially Announced, Coming Late 2022
After months of rumors and speculation, Lucasfilm has officially unveiled Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, a new limited animated series coming to Disney Plus in late 2022.
We knew a specific panel for the show was coming to this Star Wars Celebration, and it didn’t disappoint. After wowing attendees (again) with an extended look at The Mandalorian season 3 and a first Ahsoka teaser, Dave Filoni captained the Tales of the Jedi panel and detailed everything that we’ll see in this show.
Essentially, Tales of the Jedi started as a side project of sorts for Filoni, something he came up with in between seasons of The Mandalorian and everything else they have going on in the live-action side of Lucasfilm. He also told the audience it was born from ideas he had for The Clone Wars but didn’t really fit the overall narrative.
The series, which uses the animation style of The Clone Wars, is made up of six shorts centered around Jedi knights from the prequels, including Count Dooku, Qui-Gon Jinn (voiced by Liam Neeson and his son across different ages), Mace Windu, and Ahsoka Tano (who gets three episodes). Unsurprisingly, Ahsoka is getting more and more attention nowadays, with her own series coming up and all that. Regarding the tone of her three, very different shorts, Filoni said they have little dialogue and feel like visual poems. Indeed, one of them, showing us baby Ahsoka and her mother (played by Star Wars Battlefront II lead Janina Gavankar), was played for the attendees, who claimed it felt “very Miyazaki” before Filoni himself confirmed the influence. Also, Star Wars animation veteran Kevin Kiner is handling the original score for the entire show.
Filoni also commented on the tone of the episode that was shown, which was very cute, but warned fans things get dark in other chapters, such as Dooku’s. Finally, a trailer was shown, featuring bits like an animated iteration of Padmé’s funeral, Ahsoka getting a second saber, Bail Organa, and Yaddle fighting Dooku! Moreover, one of the Ahsoka-centric shorts appears to be adapting events from E.K. Johnston’s Ahsoka novel.
Tales of the Jedi definitely looks like another Visions-like bite-sized treat, and we can’t wait to see how it expands on mostly unknown chapters of fan-favorite characters’ lives.
