Kathleen Kennedy Reveals Next ‘Star Wars’ Films Set After the Time of the Sequel Trilogy

While there was not news for Star Wars movies at yesterday’s Lucasfilm presentation (aside from a very small bit of news for the still-untitled Indiana Jones 5), a new report gives us a similarly small update on the state of the films. Current word from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy indicates that many of the films that are in development will be set after the events of the Sequel Trilogy.

Empire managed to speak with Kennedy at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim with a bit of new knowledge from their correspondence with her. It seems that while the shows on Disney Plus are likely to continue exploring the eras between specific movies — with shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor exploring the time between the original and prequel trilogies, and shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka exploring the time between the original and sequel trilogies — the focus of the films will be about leaving the nine-film Skywalker Saga behind and showing the state of the galaxy after the destruction of the Sith and the fall of the Final Order. Here’s what Kennedy had to say:

“We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space. [The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on.”

Part of this isn’t news, as it’s been known that Rogue Squadron would be set after The Rise of Skywalker since it was announced as taking place in a new era. However, it is interesting to consider that projects such as Taika Waititi’s film, or possibly the Kevin Feige-produced film, will explore the near-future of the galaxy far, far away. And while the possibility of Episode XEpisode XI, and Episode XII seem very far away, it seems like these new movies may provide a way for us to revisit what characters introduced in the sequel trilogy are up to, even if they aren’t necessarily the focus of these stories.
