‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Chapter 1 Makes Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Chart

Nielsen’s top 10 streaming series provides good news for The Book of Boba Fett fans, as the new Star Wars series cracked the top 10 of the original series chart during the week of Dec. 27 to Jan. 2. This is of course remarkable, as during this week, the Temuera Morrison-led series only competed with one 39-minute episode, opposite the four seasons of Cobra Kai which took the number one position.

From The Hollywood Reporter, The Book of Boba Fett made it to the eighth spot after collecting 389 million minutes of viewing time from U.S. Disney Plus subscribers. If we divide by the 39 minutes of Chapter 1, we find that around 10 million people watched the opening episode of the series. This doesn’t take into account how many people rewatched the episode, so the actual number of viewers is smaller than that. Notice that, in this sense, it is a similar system to box office reporting — the unit of measurement is time (or dollars) spent on the show (movie), not the number of people that watched it. By dividing by 39 minutes, we also assume that every viewer watched it all the way through.

The 10 million viewers (if we were to account for rewatches, the number might go down to around 7-8 million) stand out if we consider that Samba TV reported last month that around 1.7M of the 46M TV households they track watched the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett. Of course, Nielsen’s numbers are more reliable, as Samba TV only tracks a limited number of TV devices — not all of them, and it doesn’t account for people who watch the show on mobile devices or laptops.

Data collected by Parrot Analytics showed that, after eleven days, The Book of Boba Fett held the #12 spot of the most-watched television shows in the States. Since it was not stated otherwise, we assume this chart includes non-original series, which means The Book of Boba Fett was also competing against some of the most frequent visitors of top 10 charts, like The Office, Friends, or Grey’s Anatomy.

As of the posting of this article, there are only two episodes left of The Book of Boba Fett, and after the high bar left by Chapter 5, expectations are through the roof — and presumably, so will viewership numbers. We will keep you updated as more numbers are reported in the next few weeks, which will allow us to see the full scope of the show’s overall performance.
