Pedro Pascal Indicates Future Episodes of ‘The Mandalorian’ And Spin-Offs Will Explore Different Time Periods

The Mandalorian
Star Wars: The Mandalorian is the cornerstone of Disney+, and its many spin-offs (The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic) are going to help flesh out the era between the original and sequel trilogies. Pedro Pascal has been let in on the plan and he’s indicated that the stories that cross over will address various characters and eras of Star Wars that fans may not typically expect.

Talking to IndieWire, Pedro Pascal delved into his involvement in The Mandalorian that’s helped rocket his career into superstardom after a head-poppingly popular supporting role on Game of Thrones. He indicated that the team at Lucasfilm are hard at work in figuring out how to go from working on a single series to multiple shows that will intersect and lead up to a big, climactic event:

“I am told what’s happening and what the plan is, but I can’t share it. They are in the expansion of this world, where there are so many unexpected surprises and timelines that are going to be dealt with. If the character were to cross over into these worlds, it will be utilized in a way that isn’t meant to be expected. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise of whether or not characters from the show we already know are crossing over.”

Flashbacks in The Mandalorian are expected, given their presence in informing the backstory of Din Djarin to the audience before he put the helmet on, and the fact that Cobb Vanth recapped portions of his backstory from the Aftermath novels in a similar fashion. They also helped provide some details on how IG-11 was reprogrammed from being a ruthless bounty hunter to a fiercely protective nurse droid. Pascal’s comments indicate that we may see story events from the time of the prequel and original trilogies factor into the grand narrative, along with more seeds that sprout into the story told in the sequels being planted. (We’ve seen hints at not just the origins of the First Order, but also of Palpatine’s plans for Snoke and a clone body for himself.)

But out of the three shows announced, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett seem to be the most likely to get into eras outside of The Mandalorian‘s traditional timeline. Both characters have a long history in the galaxy far, far away, with key events, such as Ahsoka’s still-unexplained escape from Malachor and Boba Fett’s still-unexplained escape from the Sarlaac likely being addressed within the context of these shows rather than in a novel or a sourcebook of some kind. That’s not to say that Rangers of the New Republic is going to be a slouch, either – that series could help provide crucial context to events like the Battle of Jakku. It’s not just the future that’s exciting for The Mandalorian and its associated series – the past is every bit as interesting.

The first two seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+, with a third expected to arrive in 2022. The spin-off The Book of Boba Fett will hit Disney Plus this December. Two other spin-offs, Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic, are in development for unspecified release dates.
