‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ Was the Start of a New “Franchise” as Sequels Are on the Way
Coming on the heels of a sudden DLC (downloadable content) release for the game, EA CEO Andrew Wilson has announced that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the “first title in an entirely new franchise.”
Wilson made the statement during an earnings call and this is the first confirmation we’ve had that the game is getting ‘sequels’. No confirmation yet on what the CEO means by ‘franchise’ but the implication of more than one game is positive news for Star Wars fans and gamers alike.
The most obvious choice is Fallen Order 2 but beyond that it’s anyone’s guess. The use of the word ‘franchise’ rather than ‘series’ implies that it will be more than simply a trilogy. Most likely it will be an expansion on the Star Wars Jedi brand. With Fallen Order being the Cal Kestis story, any number of other force users in any of Star Wars’ time periods could be developed.
While never publicly planned to be more than a single game: the positive reception and high sales numbers boded well for a sequel. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said the game ‘significantly beat our expectations’ of 10 million units.
The game’s developer Respawn (owned by EA) has been posting various Star Wars related roles recently, causing speculation of a sequel. It’s nice to finally get some official word on it, even If the details are light.
EA is wise to both develop and build hype for this franchise of games as they only have three years left on their contract. In 2013 they signed a deal with Disney to exclusively develop their video games for 10 years.
In the seven years since then three non-mobile games have been released: Battlefront, a reboot of the beloved PS2 game was met with scrutiny for its lack of single player content, it’s sequel Battlefront II, was met with massive controversy regarding its inclusion of loot boxes and what was described as a ‘pay to win’ (with updates and changes the game turned it around and has had some amazing content added in the last two years) and, thirdly, Fallen Order.
So EA need some serious wins if they want a renewal of that contract with Disney, and for positive press to go along with it. Hopefully, this announcement is the beginning of that and however way you look at it, more Star Wars gaming, especially story-driven single-player content, is exciting news for all of us.
