‘The Acolyte’ Adds Kogonada and Alex García López as Directors

With The Acolyte about to begin its fifth month of filming in the UK, we are learning a bit more about the people that are working on the show behind the camera. While Lucasfilm has been (surprisingly) upfront about the cast of the series, not much information has transpired about its writers or directors besides the fact that Leslye Headland is captain of the ship.

First mentioned by insider Daniel Richtman, and later confirmed by a report from Discussing Film, it looks like After Yang director Kogonada will be helming at least one episode of the upcoming series; Discussing Film also adds The Witcher‘s Alex García López into the mix. Up until this point, we only knew about Leslye Headland directing the pilot episode, though we assume she might also step in to direct another one. It’s currently unknown how many episodes Kogonada or García López will direct, much like we don’t know the total number of episodes of the series (or shall we say season?).

Besides directing the critically acclaimed film After Yang, starring Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith (who is also in The Acolyte), Kogonada also helmed four episodes of Apple TV Plus’ Pachinko, which received rather positive reviews last year. García López is a prolific TV director who has worked on Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, The Witcher, Daredevil, The Punisher, and Luke Cage, among others.

As far as the writers go, so far we only know that Leslye Headland is the showrunner and head writer, and that the writers’ room she assembled included House of the Dragon scribe Charmaine DeGraté. The officially announced cast includes Amandla Stenberg, who plays the lead role, Lee Jung-jae, who plays the male co-lead, Dafne Keen, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Margarita Levieva is also reportedly guest-starring in the series.

More details about The Acolyte will possibly be announced during Star Wars Celebration, where attendees might even get their first look at the series (or at least a behind-the-scenes reel). It’s unlikely, however, that we will learn there about the full directing or writing lineup. Instead, we might get our first sense of plot details. So far, the synopsis revealed by Lucasfilm describes the show as follows:

The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

The Acolyte will release on Disney Plus in 2024, likely in the first half of the year. Filming will be ongoing across the UK landscape through May 2023.
